Captain Bickford House 'Arthur Frommer has been a guest here in 2014'
Live like the locals in our stunning seaside community!
This newly renovated Captains Cottage which overlooks Frenchmans Bay with stunning views of Cadillac Mountain has been a part of our family for 4 generations, and is now ready for your arrival. We have carefully maintained the integrity of what the home of a Boat Captain, on the coast of Maine is really like, while providing you with all of the modern amenities. Sleeping 6 comfortably this 2 bedroom, 1 bath home features on-site washer & dryer, 3 car parking, a backyard with BBQ grill and room for horseshoes or just relax and watch the sunsets. Walking distance to restaurants, grocery store, Bar Harbor Ferry, post office, and of course our store, the Winter Harbor 5 &10.
Bring your bike(rentals are available in the area)and ride around our lovely town or take a trip around Schoodic point. This is also a great place to go kayaking. Paddle out to an offshore island or just meander along the shore and inlets. The is also a 9 hole golf course in town and every hole has a view of the ocean.
Winter Harbor is a working fishing community and summer playground. We are located on the tip of the Schoodic Peninsula at the entrance to Acadia National Park, Schoodic Section, a must see for those visiting Maine. Visit us in August and experience the Annual Lobster Festival on the 2nd Saturday of the month. Where live music, a craft fair, parade, boat races & of course lobsters are the main event and shut down the town streets for the event.
The Schoodic section of Acadia National Park is home to the Schoodic Education and Research Center. This is the only mainland section of Acadia National Park and is known for it's rocky point where during storms the waves can produce 60ft tall walls of ocean spray. Around the first 2 weeks of August the area host the Schoodic Arts festival (check their web site for exact dates).
The Schoodic peninsula is also the home to many local crafts people and artists. We have everything from jewelry made of sea glass to Art galleries with fine paintings.
Quote from Arthur Frommer ' I prefer going to a local real estate broker, one with limited inventory that they have themselves inspected. By simply accessing the internet, and scanning the options in a town you have chosen, you have a good chance to find a reputable agent, as I recently did. He was Peter Drinkwater of the small but exquisite waterfront town of Winter Harbor, Maine, who--with his wife Sandy--owns the Captain Bickford House (where we stayed) and also finds other such house rentals for persons calling or inquiring about his main property (P.O. Box 340, Winter Harbor, Maine 04693, 207/963-2710, wh5n10@myfairpoint.net).'

Disappointed.
First, I was not given any instructions on how to enter the house. I sent messages via VRBO and attempted calling the owner without a response. Thankfully I was able to locate a local number for the owner and was able to get the door code at 9:30pm. I found a hypodermic needle on top of the refrigerator. We had a mouse in the living room. When I texted the number we found for the owner, I never got a response as to getting mouse traps. We ended up getting our own. The description did not mention the house did not have an AC unit. A couple of the days got in the upper 70’s and the upstairs bedrooms would not cool down at night. Additionally, larger individuals would not do well in the shower. It is an extremely small shower. I am not a large person but still did not have enough room. And the town requires special bags or tags for trash pick up. The owners do not provide this to the renters which in my opinion should be a given, instead they suggest buying them from their 5 & 10 store.
We made it work and was able to use the house. It was a cute rustic home and the locals were very nice. I just expected better communication from the owners, especially given we had some issues.

We are horrified that a hypodermic needle was found in the house. I do not routinely check the top of the refrigerator between each guest. This requires getting up on a step stool and you can be sure it will be part of my change-over routine. As for the lack of communication, we had no messages on our cell phones or two landlines during your stay. We came by three times during the week to check on how you were doing and if you needed anything. We never found anyone home. We never lock the main door and cannot imagine why or how it was locked on your arrival. We apologize for that inconvenience and for the fact that there were no lights on. We were out of town that night and dropped the ball. You were able to reach us by cell then so you did have a good contact number.
This is Maine. Air conditioners are rarely needed, especially on the coast and more especially not on Sargent Street in Winter Harbor. That week was unseasonably warm for October. I’m sorry you were uncomfortable and we will look into air conditioning in the future. Yes, it is a small shower. The largest bed is a double. This is a small country farm house with small rooms. Nothing larger fits. We do sell the trash bags at our store but at no profit. They are provided as a service to the town with all proceeds going back to the town. We will correct this in the future and provide one large town trash bag per week of stay. We had not had a mouse in the house for several years since a renovation and none were found at the time of post-reservation cleaning in the traps that were set.
We have never had complaints like this. There are several tenants who come year after year and absolutely love the house. We are sorry that you had so many issues that we were not aware of until now. We strive to provide clean and comfortable lodging in a traditional Maine cottage. This time, unfortunately, we did not meet that goal.
After further investigation into the hypodermic needle, a young family stayed in the house in August. They have a diabetic dog and two small children. The insulin supplies were kept on top of the fridge out of the hands of the children, and unfortunately one of the syringes apparently got left behind.

Bright and beautiful!
We felt right at home in this quaint and beautiful little house. We had everything we needed to make us comfortable. Extra-comfy beds and comforters for best sleep, too. There are so many places to visit and so many things to do nearby. Great restaurants like the Pickled Wrinkle and Crocker House (Hancock), Schoodic Point for hiking, biking, and picnicking, Grindstone Neck for rocky beaches, of course--the golf course with ocean views, Acadia on Mt Desert Island, 180 degree view of the coast from Pigeon Hill in Steuben, the cozy library, the beautiful harbor villages. Need to stay longer to fit in more fun times, like a ferry to Bar Harbor or a boat ride in Blue Hill. Next time! Perfect peaceful spot for a relaxing stay.

Beautiful home in a beautiful part of the world
This was a beautiful, comfortable home for our family of four. My parents came to visit and there was plenty of room for all of us. We loved exploring Winter Harbor and the Schoodic peninsula--such incredible beauty without the crowds of Mount Desert Island.

Loved the house. Very comfortable and close to town and activities
House was very comfortable and addition added gave extra space to relax and watch sun rise. House was well equipped with dishes and linens so we did not have to pack our own items. We loved our relaxing stay in Winter Harbor.

Second visit was as wonderful as the first
Beautifully restored, historic house makes you feel a real part of this charming, low-key, friendly town. The proximity to Schoodic Point for biking, birding, photography, and ocean watching is wonderful. We didn't even go to Acadia on MDI this year - Schoodic has what we value most (beauty, outdoor activities) without the crowds.

The Perfect Place
The lovely old, yet quite modern, Captain Bickford House in Winter Harbor was an ideal place to see all the sights, yet have a nice, quiet place to come "home" to after a busy day of seeing Mid-Coast and Downeast Maine. Acadia National Park is a 45-minute drive away, but you have your own piece of it just 5 minutes away in the Schoodic Peninsula - a much more peaceful, relaxed and enjoyable place to be. Add to that the loads of galleries and artists, stunning views around every bend, and a major airport (Bangor) only an hour away, and this is the ideal place to be!
P.S. Be sure to walk over to Chase's for breakfast (or lunch or dinner) for some of the best blueberry pancakes this side of the Mississippi!

Loved it. Hard to leave.
Newly renovated, this place was charming, clean, and very comfortable. The owner was friendly and easy to talk to. The community is relaxed, safe, and friendly. Being close to Schoodic Point was the best. Go stay next to Mount Desert Island if you want hectic, crowded, and waiting in lines. Being away from the main part of Acadia but right next to the "annex" part of Acadia was perfect for us. We still drove to Cadillac mountain a few times but were always relieved to get back to Winter Harbor. Despite the less touristy town, they still have a beautiful, new gallery/bakery/coffee/food spot that had wifi and great espresso (My teenager and I walked there every morning). Biking was great. About a 10 mile loop from this cottage all around Schoodic Point. The reality of this rental was even better than it appeared in the listing except for the description of the view. The view is only OK but you have only to walk 2 minutes to see the harbor in full view.
