It was a wonderful time in this beautiful little tuskan village in the mountains. The view from the terrace is breathtaking and we soaked it up every morning for breakfast before we explored the area and at night with a colorful aperitivo and fresh food you can find all over the area in little market stands and which makes every dinner on the porch a real plesure!
The children had a lot of fun exploring the villages little valleys and hidden corners- though the place might not be convenient for very small children or people with problems walking, because you need to be able to manage the steep and bumpy old stone alleys (which make the charm of the village) as well as the house´s many stairs. For us it was no problem though.
The apartment is well equipped, there wasn´t anything missing- all in the nice traditional tuskan style.
The people in the village were all very friendly and open (in the typical grumpy tuskan way :)) and there are a lot of events going on during the summer months- from pizza session in the little old piazza allmost behind the house to live music events in the circolo down at the edge of the village.
There is a beautiful beach an hour drive away from Vellano and also many interesting places with lots of arts, food and history to be explored.
Stuart, the manager of the place is a wonderful person, always helpful and providing lovely suggestions, we felt very cared for.
All in all: thank you very much, it was a marvelous time in Vellano!

About the host
Hosted by Amelia Schmertz
We are an Italian-American family living in Philadelphia. Francesco is Tuscan, and moved to the States in the 1990s. He is a landscape architect. Amelia is a fundraiser for the arts. We have been visiting family in Italy together every year since 2004, and in 2021 we made the big bold move to have a place of our own.
Why they chose this property
Francesco grew up in Pescia, and spent his summers in Vellano - "the day after school was out, we packed up the car, and drove up the mountain!" says his mother, every time! When Amelia saw Vellano for the first time, she fell in love with the town and the surroundings, and Francesco was only too willing to oblige her obsessive search for a Tuscan place to call home. When we bought the house in summer 2021, Francesco was touched that so many people in the village remembered him and his family from their summer visits so many decades ago.
What makes this property unique
This house is perfect because it can host two different families, is in the middle of town, and is relatively new. It was built in the 1990s, on the site of a house that had been destroyed in WWII. The restaurant, Trattoria Manero, is fantastic. In summers, there are pizza parties in the square every Friday night. Be sure to reserve a spot! It is a wonderful experience.
