Great Northern Railway chairman of the board Louis Hill dubbed the rugged mountains of Glacier National Park "America's Alps." Between 1909 and 1913, the Great Northern Railway constructed the Belton Chalet complex under Hills direction. It was the first of the Great Northern Railway's sprawling hotels to serve Glacier National Park created in 1910. (Montana Historical Society)
This is the origin of the current location of West Glacier. 100% of the community is within 1/4 mile of the railroad. Thousands of tourists descend on this sleepy little railway town every year and we are very proud of our friendly mountain home and family heritage. The Belton train depot is still active and tourists can be shuttled from the station to Park locations on the historic "Red Buses" that have been completely restored. Maybe consider reserving a tour through Glacier Park with the Red Bus tours, it has high reviews.
Local must see hotspots would include Flathead Lake, Bigfork, Whitefish Mountain and the Great Bear and Bob Marshall Wilderness areas.
