Quiet rural Maine cabin near Bigelow Preserve, Flagstaff Lake and Sugarloaf
Highland Hideaway
Nestled deep in the tranquil Western Maine Woods, this rural retreat offers peace and privacy, with snow-covered landscapes in winter, lush forest in summer and the always relaxing sounds of the nearby streams. It is one of the few locations in the area that remains open during winter, offering cozy amenities and a welcoming atmosphere for guests seeking a seasonal retreat.
This small abode is perfect for two but can accommodate up to 4 guests. It is equipped with heating and air conditioning, ensuring a pleasant stay every season. The cabin stands alone, off the deck, at the back of our property, with its own yard, campfire ring and driveway. Thanks to the sturdy metal roof over the deck, you can enjoy grilling and cooking meals outdoors in almost any weather conditions. The screenhouse invites you to unwind outdoors and enjoy your meals without worrying about pesky bugs. Summers bring entertaining hummingbirds, and the gentle sounds of the surrounding crystal-clear streams, adding a touch of magic to the experience.
Popular things to do here: Spring/Summer/ Fall: hiking, mountain/fat biking, bird watching, kayaking, fishing, leaf peeping, hunting. Winter: snowmobiling, skiing/snowboarding Sugarloaf, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing.
Hikers and Bikers: We are a short distance from East side of Bigelow Preserve, Appalachia Trail, Flagstaff Hut and the East side of Flagstaff Lake. It is a 12-mile drive north from the cabin to the Flagstaff Trailhead.
Skiers and snowboarders: Sugarloaf Mountain a scenic 45-minute drive from this location.
Snowmobilers: There are snowmobile trails nearby, and trail access from this road. Check with the local snowmobile clubs for trail access, locations and conditions.
The road to the property runs parallel to scenic Route 201 (Old Canada Road) and Route 27, which passes through Carrabassett Valley, Sugarloaf Mountain, and the west side of Flagstaff Lake. Our road is paved, plowed as necessary and open during the winter months. GPS may be a little confusing when looking at the area roads: many of the gravel roads off this road are only accessible by snowmobile during the winter months, and most comfortably navigated by AWD and 4WD when they are accessible. For those familiar with the area, Carriage Road is no longer accessible.
The outdoor cooking area includes a gas grill, four-burner gas cook top, large toaster oven, large electric skillet and a large patio cooler. The picnic table is just off the deck. The kitchenette inside has a refrigerator, Keurig and 12 cup coffee makers, microwave, crockpot, toaster oven, dishes, cutlery, kitchen utensils and tools, mixing bowls and pans. Bring your food & beverages.
We provide bed linens, pillows, blankets and towels. The adult-size bunk has a lower bunk that sleeps two people with a child-size upper bunk, and another twin bunk across the room. There is a multiple device charging port for your devices, WIFI TV, DVD player, movies and an Echo Dot for tunes. The cabin has an electric fireplace for additional warmth and ambiance. There is a full bathroom with a shower. There is also an outside shower, open once the weather permits. The screenhouse offers outdoor seating for 4 and can be a great place to keep gear out of the winter elements. We provide some firewood for the campfire if we have it and always appreciate it when folks bring some Maine firewood with them. We do not offer laundry service, but there are laundromats in the two nearby towns.
Due to the size of the cabin and available resources, we are unable to host more than four guests at a time. Please ensure your group does not exceed four people, as we are unable to accommodate larger parties. Thank you for your understanding.

This was such a great stay for a friend and I who were visiting sugarloaf over the weekend. Highly recommend, the absolute sweetest hosts. Thank you for having us, will stay again!
Lois and Paul have a great thing going, with their all inclusive little abode. I was greeted with some outstanding homemade peach(?) pound cake upon my arrival, from Lois’ hands to mine, prior to our introductions. Very kind folks and we had some great conversation. Their guest house may be small in stature, but plentiful with amenities. Great funky layout with fun options for hanging outdoors (though too cold at the time). Highly recommend a stay!
This place is AWSOME!It is immaculate with everything you want, need and more! We loved everything from furniture made by Paul to pretty baskets decorated by Lois - the place just has no equals. And to top it all, hosts Lois and Paul are AWSOME too!
We enjoyed the outside kitchen and screened living room. It was quiet, peaceful, and the hummingbirds were a bonus. The inside area was comfortable, and the handmade furniture was charming. The hosts were respectful and generous. It was a very comfortable place to stay, and we would love to come back.
Great stay, wonderful and friendly hosts. Only note (and very minor note) is that the cabin is closer to their main house than it seems to be on the listing. It's a kind of detached guest house, but only a few feet from their house. That being said, they were very gracious and left us with space to enjoy a quiet cabin getaway; I saw Lois once at the beginning of the stay (she was very friendly and thorough) and then didn't see anyone else the entire time. Wonderful place and area.
Terrific cabin in the heart of Western Maine mountains. Hosts are vey friendly and accommodating. I would definitely recommend this place and would stay there again!

About the host
Hosted by Lois and Paul
We are a couple of retired Mainers fortunate enough to be able to share the beauty of the lush forest and tranquil streams that surround us. We love living here and sharing the peace and beauty this area offers. Reading our guest book entries and listening to our guests’ stories warms our hearts and reminds us why we cherish this place. We always want to make sure you have a great experience while you are here. It starts with helping you find the place, greeting you when you arrive, and letting you know that if you forgot something—like a stick of butter—we probably have it, so you don’t need to drive back into town. As retired chefs and bartenders, we are passionate about hospitality and from time to time may share some of the delicious creations from our kitchen, so don't be surprised if we leave a goodie or two for you. If we are making it, we are more than likely want to share it :) We always look forward to meeting you and seeing you and yours again. We may not get to respond to all of our kind reviews, but we thank every guest from the bottom of our hearts for the kind words, gifts and pictures. Thank you in advance for helping our small business thrive and supporting us in our retirement journey. Your interest is truly appreciated.
