Story-book Cabin in the Woods above Lake Superior, near Grand Marais. -New Sauna
(In May of 2024, we finished building a wood-fired sauna and off- grid shower building at this property. Hope you'll like it!)
Charming off-grid cabin surrounded by beautiful forest, starry skies, and wildlife. Campfires, hammocks, and seclusion await you at this sweet cottage. While enjoying the tranquility of this cabin, it's hard to believe Lake Superior and Grand Marais are less than five minutes away. Enjoy the nearby waterfalls, shorelines, and new bike path along the big Lake.
Well-stocked kitchen with propane stove. Gallery stairs lead to a loft with a comfy queen bed. There is also full size futon downstairs, a little wood stove and solar-powered lights and USB charger. It's hard to believe off-grid living could be this cozy. That said, it's not for everyone. Guests will bring in water, ice, and linens / sleeping bags. There is an outhouse for guests. Guests will need to tidy up the cabin for the next guests as well (therefore there is no cleaning fee).
If you're looking for a unique lodging experience that is still comfortable and charming in a location that feels totally secluded but is just outside of Grand Marais, this is the spot!

We love this little cabin in the woods and it's very very private. The woodburning stove heats everything up so nicely. It is so close to Grand Marais and gorgeous trails. Lots of wood is provided which is essential. Truly beautiful place!
This tiny cabin was really lovely! It's designed so well to accommodate it's off-grid needs. (It was the nicest outhouse I've ever seen.) Having firewood provided was also really convenient. Just the right amount of isolation and amenities.
Nice, charming, clean, remote and off the grid cabin. Exactly as described. Good owners who respond quickly and communicate well. I'd recommend it to anyone.
The property was super fun. Clean and stylish. Remote, but only a quick drive to town. Rustic but well-appointed. Good systems to manage off-the-grid living without feeling like you are "roughing it." The sauna was awesome. Good communication from the owners with easy-to-follow directions and a quick clean-up on our way out. Highly recommend!!
Gorgeous cabin nestled among the birches and aspens. It had everything we needed and well stocked with firewood as well. Close to Grand Marais, hiking, and bike trails. Would definitely recommend to any couple looking to unplug for a weekend!
Great little place to just get away from everything for a few days. The nights got down towards upper 30’s and the wood stove kept it nice and warm in the cabin. Grand Marais is such a great area and we were thrilled to have such a great off the grid cabin to stay at.
Good location, private, quiet, awesome sauna and craftsman cabins, easy to find(good directions). It was off-grid yet we had all the essentials with quaint lighting and a comfy bed.
We really enjoyed our stay at this off-grid cabin. We chose it because it was close to some hikes that we wanted to do. We made foil dinner packets to cook over the fire pit, and loved sitting outside looking at the stars. There was a chance of seeing the Northern Lights, but we never saw any. The bed in the loft and the futon were very comfortable and there were plenty of blankets to keep us warm. It got chilly overnight, and we were tempted to start a fire in the stove the next morning, but we didn't want to have to clean it before leaving. It was a peaceful place to be.
This was such a peaceful lodging in the woods yet so close to the lake and Grand Marais as described. It was easy to relax instantly in the cheery lodging you created. We just stayed for the weekend as a respite from biking but could have stayed longer! Thank you!
Quiet & Secluded - Still Less Than 10 Mins From Town
Skip the Best Western next time - campfire, no TV - just a few solar powered lights (enough to do the job!) secluded - quiet. Nice little sauna shared between the 4 little cabins - bucket on a rope spigot shower - funny how quick you can shower when the waters chilly! If you haven’t had a secluded cabin stay or want a redo this place is awesome!
(Only caveat is if staying in Gingerbread know that the stairs/ladder to the loft are steep - it’s loose rock and steps up to the front door - foot path through the woods over a little bridge over some water from parking spot to cabin - if mobility is an issue you won’t make it here unfortunately - bathroom is a Porto-Potty 😁)
This is a very lovely space; simple in design, new, and easy to get to with a car. Honestly, we chose it because it was the only place we could find for that night--my sons' were biking from the border of Iowa to the canadian border, putting them in Grand Marais on a saturday night, finishing the bike ride the following day. So we took it.
That it lacked running water and electricity wasn't a problem, just for the price we paid it felt, well, bad. They will plan better next time, so we don't have to feel this way. This was the most expensive place they stayed on the entire trip up (500 miles, 7 nights) and every other place had plumbing, electricity, wifi. Yes, we realize this is in the woods, and rustic, and that's good. Just feeling over-charged for what we got.
The owners gave great instructions on finding the property and the check in process. The cabin is very clean and charming! The property is very private and you truly can unplug and feel at ease. The town is easily accessible and close for entertainment and dining. Washing dishes was a little difficult as there was no sponge or scrubby so definitely be sure to bring plenty of water! We would love to stay again next year!
