About this property
Prouts Neck, Steps to the Beach
Our wonderful home can now be used 365 days a year after a 2021 winterization which added air conditioning and heat to the entire house. The home has been in the family since 1937. We are on a pretty lane which dead ends at the beach. The beach at Prouts Neck is one of the most private and beautiful in the world. Our home is very comfortable for parents and children or grandparents and family due to having 5 bedrooms, 4 are upstairs, as are two bathrooms, and one bedroom with en suite bath is downstairs. All baths are renovated, but retain their original charm. We also have a spacious and modern, but old fashioned style kitchen. Best of both worlds!! Check out the photos. Laundry machines are new. Our floors are painted an attractive blue and all bedrooms have new windows & screens. We have A/C, but it is rarely need because, after all, this is Maine, by the water!! There are several TVs. We have Wi-Fi. Tons of new and old books in the Dining room/library.
We're a 2 hour drive from Boston. There's an airport in Portland. We're around 15 minutes to Portland and the fabulous Exchange Street restaurants and shops. I can't tell you how wonderful it is to stay at 'Prouts'. We often go to Freeport for shopping at L.L. Bean and all the other great shops, then come home and hit the beach to regain our strength. Also, for our of age guests, the brewery and distillery scene in Portland is incredible. The hustle and bustle of Old Orchard Beach, and the summerstock theatre in Ogunquit are wonderful fun. We also love going to Kennebunkport, to gallery hop.
There are more activities than just the beach. The area is very popular for road cycling due to the great sea views and rolling terrain. In addition, the popular car-free Eastern Rail Trail connects Scarborough to Saco along marshes and woods. Kayaking the open water, or calm scenic estuaries of the Nonsuch River or Spurwink River are easy thanks to convenient access points.
We will NOT contact you to see if you want to re-rent. Please make early arrangements, (we love return visitors), to 'protect' 'your' week(s). We often fill up for the next year; soon after labor day. You've been warned!

We loved the house. It was very clean, cozy, and plenty of room for our group of 7 to spread out. The neighborhood is very quiet and private, and you essentially have access to your own private beach (3 min walk). We enjoyed our daily walks, bikes, and runs around Prouts Neck! Mike was great to communicate with.

It was amazing! 4 houses from a private ocean beach. House had plenty of bedrooms for our family of seven! And a typical New England beachfront cottage vibe, you could feel the history in the walls, weather and used. Three bathroom and so close to amenities. We will be back.

Quintessential Maine house by the ocean
A wonderful comfy house just steps from the ocean that was perfect for our family getaway. The hosts were excellent to deal with and the house was in great shape compared to other experiences we've had. A twenty minute drive to Portland for great food.
Excellent in all respects: perfect location, steps from the beach. Cottage is charming and comfortable, and well stocked with everything one would need.

We completely enjoyed our stay on Prouts Neck. This house is old fashioned in all the best ways. Perfectly sleeping quarters for our crew, wonderful, simple kitchen, bright, airy living room, and just the right outdoor space. The walk to the beach is short, and the beach itself is perfect. It was a perfect home away from home for the week.

Very Relaxing!
We stayed at this house for the first time this year, and we loved it. My husband said the only negative was that we were not staying longer than a week! Homey and relaxing cottage, all the comforts you need, great showers, and comfy beds. We really de-compressed. The owners are incredibly well organized and have everything covered. Thanks so much for letting us stay!

I am so happy you enjoyed yourself. I hope you'll return and be able to stay even longer...I agree with your husband! Warmly, Chou Chou Merrill
This beautiful home was even bigger than in the photos. It was an easy walk to the gorgeous beach. The waves were perfect for boogie boarding.
The house fit the 8 of us very comfortably. We were able to enjoy meals together at the large dining table and the living room fit all of us with room to spare.
We enjoyed the shops in Freeport as well as mini golf and SplashTown FunTown. Our only complaint is that we had to leave to come home.
Thanks for a wonderful week!

Five stars for the location on a flower lined dead-end street with quick access to a pristine and very private beach. Five stars for attention to details. Host efficiently answered my many questions. The house was tastefully decorated and had everything we needed and more. Last, it is not only a people friendly neighborhood but a dog friendly one too. Can’t imagine a more beautiful dog park than Prouts Neck Beach. We loved watching dogs swimming in the sea. The Merrill house is a keeper!

Perfect location a short walk away from Scarborough beach. Ferry beach as well as the cliff walk around Prouts Neck are also within a 15 min walk. The house is very comfortable with lots of games and puzzles for rainy days. One bedroom with its own bathroom is on the ground floor which was great for my mom (85). At one point we had 9 people and it didn’t feel crowded. Plenty of beach towels and linens. The outdoor shower was also great to get the younger kids showered as soon as we came back from the beach. Highly recommend especially for extended families. The AC was a bonus for our one hot night.

Perfect Beach Cottage
My husband, myself, our two grown sons and a girlfriend spent a week here in June 2011. Despite several rainy and cold days (thankful for the great propane heater in the living room!), we had a wonderful time in this clean, well-equipped, and comfortable cottage. There is no need to bring anything with you to stay here. It's all been thought out for you, right down to multiple beach towels and a washer and dryer to stay on top of the laundry that being at the beach brings with it. This is a safe and quiet neighborhood and the beach is literally just a walk down the dead-end lane. The beach itself is adjacent to Scarborough Beach, which has a lifeguard. The owner was helpful and friendly, and checked in with us during our stay. No complaints, only thanks!

Comfort and Charm
Our family of eight with a baby and dogs had a wonderful week in this charming summer home. Everything we needed was provided as listed, it was clean & welcoming, and there was even a beach rose in a vase left for us on the dining room table. The ownwers answered all our questions before we came, they were great to do business with. We enjoyed nice big bedrooms with comfy beds, all made up for us to crawl into, plenty of room in the kitchen for all of us to cook, and a big table to gather around for dinner and games. Gorgeous Scarborough Beach is a short walk down the lane, and my beloved Portland is minutes away. We did take trips to some of our favorite haunts, but we had our our best times in this wonderful cottage. Sitting in the sun on the front porch or enjoying the privacy of the back patio brought us relaxation and peace and always a smile. I was born in Portland, we have stayed in many cottages in this area in the past 35 + years, and this Prout's Neck home is the best yet. We will be back again and again, I recommend this this rental to everyone.

I am so new to renting our home through VRBO, that I JUST saw this when I hit a wrong button. AMAZED, by your generous comments. I will print and pin up this note, to remind myself of the pleasure of being nice and feel the glow of being so handsomely rewarded for it. Our home thanks you, for your affection for it. You are VERY welcome to return. Thank you.

Favorite Summer Memories!
This was our third year staying at this Prouts Neck home. It has become a highlight of our summer and a favorite family tradition. The house is beautiful, comfortable and well-situated close to the beach. You can tell that the owners take great pride in the home and that they enjoy sharing this gem with guests. The house is immaculate upon arrival with extra touches such as provided soap and toilet paper. Even beach chairs and beach towels are available for use! The beds are extremely comfortable and the house easily sleeps our family of 10. While we were there this year, it was extremely hot. However, it is comfortable to sleep at night with the windows open and the ample provided fans. The kitchen is very neat, practical and modern. I love the convenience of the washer and dryer right in the kitchen. The bathrooms are modern and clean with great showers. Nothing can top the amazing beach (only a 5 minute walk from the house!) and the cliff walk. The beach is calm, quiet and peaceful. A true get-away! Yet, many attractions are close by, if you want to venture out by car to restaurants, shops and activities. We already look forward to returning next summer!

We loved our time in Prouts on Garrison Lane. The house has lots of rooms and great beach charm. We were traveling with two children under 2.5 and the location of the stairs made it easy to contain them downstairs, which is always a plus. The house is just a quick walk to a beautiful beach and a short drive to a lot of great restaurants in the area. We hope to return soon!

Our home away from home was charming, cozy, supplied with all that we needed, and wonderfully close to the beach! The best ice cream ever was a short distance away, and the beach was almost our very own! Each one of us wished we could have stayed longer, but have definite plans of returning!! Thank you so much for helping to make our vacation so special!!!

About the host
Hosted by Mike
We had fun at this nearby Kennebunkport Gallery and were back at the beach after lunch. Our sons are the family's 5th and 6th generation in this sweet home.
Why they chose this property
This great beach home has been in our family since 1937 and has been lovingly maintained and modernized. We have painted wood floors. Everything you need to be modern, to be comfortable..IS modern. We will NOT contact you to RE-RENT. PLEASE...we want you to be happy...remember to book as SOON as possible for the next year to try to make sure nobody else 'takes it'. This HAS been a problem!!! Protect your week(s).
What makes this property unique
We have a wonderful wood stove insert for additional ambience (though the new heating system is more than sufficient) . We have an outdoor shower (with hot water) to rinse the salt from bathing suits when you're not yet ready to call it a day. We have a garage but it's not for cars. Go look. Washer and dryer are new and conveniently, in the kitchen.
