Beauty & Serenity on the Lake at Bark Point Perch!
Seeking an escape that offers you beauty, serenity, privacy and yet is convenient enough to all the activities the South Shore has to offer? Look no further than Bark Point Perch!
This two-bedroom, one-bath home is (ahem) perched on the lakefront side of one of the most desirable locations of Lake Superior’s South Shore is this adorable cabin, which perfectly mixes modern style (and conveniences) with the rustic charm that makes this area so authentic.
Your host runs Bark Point Ventures, a vacation rental management & concierge company that specializes in properties on Lake Superior's South Shore. She lives nearby and is available 24/7 to assist her guests. Our passion is ensuring guests experience the magic of what we feel is one of the most amazing places in the world.
Bark Point Perch is perched on the open-water side of Bark Point, a spit of land that extends several miles out into Lake Superior. There's a boat landing nearby where you can check out the bay behind the point, and you're also just a few minutes from the beautiful estuary at the head of the bay. To get your feet wet in lake there’s no better spot than Herbster Beach, which is just a few minutes down the road.
The other South Shore towns, Port Wing to the west and Cornucopia to the east, are both close by, both with their own beaches. Port Wing has an awesome coffee shop that roasts its own beans (we stock them in the house) and a great little convenience store with a fish counter. Cornucopia (or ‘Corny' as the locals call it) has an excellent coffee shop, a general store, and a few restaurants and shops. It can be a little more crowded, but it's got a few more amenities, too. Bayfield is close by, too, about 45 minutes’ drive: perfect to check out the attractions over there then return to your South Shore oasis for another Superior sunset. Ashland, where you’ll find more stores and amenities, is just under an hour away. Duluth and Superior are about and hour and a quarter to the west.
The cabin features a spacious open-plan living/dining/kitchen great room with stunning views of the lake. The kitchen has been thoughtfully appointed with everything and anything you need, including a wide range of spices, coffee (we feature coffee beans fresh-roasted just a few miles away), teas, as well as cookware/bakeware galore!
The living area has a crazy-comfy sectional, with the gas-powered “wood” stove as its centerpiece. The dining area will comfortably seat up to 6.
The downstairs bedroom features a queen bed and views of the lake. It connects to the cabin’s bathroom, which is spacious and includes a shower AND tub (so rare up here!).
Upstairs features the loft sleeping area which is configurable - two twin beds that connect together to make a king-size sleeping situation or can be separated if need be. The loft also houses a desk/working area as well as a cozy reading nook. And, if you absolutely have to work, you’ll be delighted at the high-speed wifi that you can access anywhere in the cabin.
A deck wraps around 3/4 of the cabin - perfect for enjoying a meal al fresco or enjoying some wine while watching the sunset.
Bark Point Perch is nestled in nearly 3 acres, which are wooded to either side of the property, making for a great deal of privacy (especially in spring-fall, when the leaves are all out). It’s also tucked away off the main road, enhancing the feeling of “getting away from it all.”
Of course, the most impressive feature of the land is the stunning lakefront views. You’ll have unobstructed views of the lake from the inside and outside. Absolute heaven!
Note: like the vast majority of properties on Lake Superior’s South Shore, there is not direct lake level access. Bark Point is a peninsula that juts out into the lake with nearly all homes sitting above the lake level. Herbster Beach, one of the area’s best, is just down the road from the cabin. And, Herbster serves as a great “jumping off” point to everything the area has to offer: just minutes from some of the best hiking, fishing, and kayaking in the area. And, Bark Point also connects to the county’s ATV and snowmobile trail systems.
Bark Point Perch is the *real* south shore experience: all the attention to detail you’d expect from a high-end Bayfield peninsula rental, but without the stuffiness or lack of character. We want you to kick your shoes off, put your feet up, relax and enjoy the company of friends, family, and your furry four-footed companions.
Due to the lack of public transportation and the distance between towns/amenities, a car is pretty much essential. But, on the plus side, traffic is not a concept we have up here!
This home is in a heavily wooded area: seasonal pests/bugs are to be expected. This home is dog friendly. While we make a considerable effort to clean up pet hair between guests, there may still be a few stray hairs in the home. While the home is lakefront, there is no direct access to the beach from this property. Watch children and pets near the bluff/lake edge, there is no fencing. Short drive to Herbster Beach

Private, serene, unique and spacious cabin. Loved the location. Check out Bark Bay Slough. Highly recommend hiking the Lost Creek Falls trail nearby. Had a great meal at the Pickled Herring in Bayfield. And took a chilly fall dip at the Herbster town beach. Always wanted to stay right on the shore of Superior and this place did not disappoint.
One of our favorite dog friendly spots we’ve stayed. Beautiful fall colors, cozy living room and fireplace to enjoy after a day of hiking and exploring.
We had a great stay at this adorable cabin set on a lot with amazing sunset views over the lake. Kids loved the loft, we had everything we needed, including fresh produce.
Erin was a wonderful host and the home and property are stunning. I wanted to find a cozy place to celebrate my grandmother’s 86th birthday. We were not disappointed! The home is so cozy and unique, with stunning views of Lake Superior and close access to the beach. Erin was wonderful! She offered local produce and meats for when we arrived and was even able to extend our stay for an additional night. This was a perfect place to spend some quality time together and am so grateful to have found this gem!
The wife and I rented this property for her 50th birthday. We loved the location and the view. The house itself is well maintained and clean. I would love to come back for another visit.
Also this house is close to Bayfield and Cornucopia. We did some good shopping in both places. We were also close to a number of good hiking trails. All of this is in the detailed guide that the host prepared for her property. She also left flowers and a really nice birthday card. Also you can order local fish, eggs and produce to be delivered when you arrive, which we did and fully enjoyed.
We loved Bark Point Perch.
The cabin is quiet and secluded with a pretty view of the lake and a yard perfect for a game of fetch with pup. Night skies are dark and the wraparound porch a great place to stargaze. As dining options up here are limited and we like to cook, we were delighted to learn host Erin would stock the fridge with local produce, eggs, and meat with 0 of the sale going to the farmers. With what we brought from home and a trip to Halvorson's for fish, we happily cooked in the cabin's well-appointed kitchen.
Between hikes and beach-wandering we enjoyed trips to Ehler's for freshly picked blueberries. We had fish fry at The Cranberry one evening and it was great. Even went to the tiny, cool record store in an old bank vault in Washburn one rainy morning.
Of course the real beauty of the Port Wing/Herbster/Corny area are it's beaches, it's sloughs and rivers, it's waterfalls and boreal forests. It's beautiful and quiet. I hope it will stay that way and I look forward to a return.
