At the end of Bark Point you'll find the start of your amazing vacation on Lake Superior! This custom-built log home is the perfect home base for an unforgettable escape to the South Shore. The property features incredible views of the lake, spectacular spaces for your group to gather & relax, a gourmet kitchen, screen porch (and deck) facing the lake, and more - all on a nearly three-acre parcel set far off the road, giving you privacy & serenity.
Your host runs Bark Point Ventures, a vacation rental management & concierge company that specializes in properties on Lake Superior's South Shore. We're nearby and we're always available to assist our guests. Our passion is ensuring guests experience the magic of the South Shore--what we feel is one of the most amazing places in the world.
Bark Point Lodge is on the very tip of Bark Point, a spit of land that extends several miles out into Lake Superior. There's a boat landing nearby where you can check out the bay behind the point, and you're also just a few minutes from the beautiful estuary at the head of the bay. To get your feet wet in the open water of Lake Superior there’s no better spot than Herbster Beach, which is just a few minutes down the road.
The other South Shore towns, Port Wing to the west and Cornucopia to the east, are both close by, both with their own beaches. Port Wing has an awesome coffee shop that roasts its own beans (we stock them in the lodge) and a great little convenience store with a fish counter. Cornucopia (or ‘Corny' as the locals call it) has an excellent coffee shop, a general store, and a few restaurants and shops. It can be a little more crowded, but it's got a few more amenities, too. Bayfield is close by, too, about 45 minutes’ drive: perfect to check out the attractions over there then return to your South Shore oasis for another Superior sunset. Ashland, where you’ll find more stores and amenities, is just under an hour away. Duluth and Superior are about an hour and a quarter to the west.
The interior of the home is anchored by the great room, with soaring two-story ceilings, a wood fireplace, ample comfy seating, and our favorite feature: Teddy, the bison. The great room flows right into the open-plan kitchen & dining room. The kitchen is a chef’s dream with gas stove, huge kitchen island (with its own prep sink), tons of counter & cabinet space, a dishwasher, and all the equipment you need to feed the whole gang. The dining nook is surrounded by windows, so you'll have the lake as a spectacular backdrop for all of your meals.
From the first floor common areas you can walk right out onto the deck or onto the screen porch. The deck and porch are both large enough for your whole group, and they face the shore for close-up views of sunrise and sunset on the Big Water. The deck also has a table and a set of chairs for outdoor dining, and a gas grill for outdoor cooking--all with that spectacular view in the background.
The downstairs is rounded out by the main bedroom with en suite bath and a private set of doors out to the screen porch. And if you need to get some work done, there's a beautiful office space with its own view out to the trees. You'll also find a half bath off the common areas.
Upstairs, you’ll find two more bedrooms which share a Jack and Jill bathroom. Both bedrooms have spectacular views of the lake: since you're a bit higher up, you can see farther out, often all the way to the North Shore in Minnesota. Our favorite spot in the house is the upstairs lounge: it has a daybed, a reading nook, and a treadmill, for workouts in rainy (or snowy) weather.
Bark Point Lodge is the perfect spot for a romantic get-away or an extended family gathering. The entire home is furnished with your comfort and convenience in mind: comfy furniture in every room, cozy throws, over-stuffed throw pillows, fully-stocked kitchen, and even a beverage cart that's ready to roll wherever you need it!! We want you to forget about the realities of day-to-day life the minute you drive onto the property, and enjoy the comfort, beauty, and peace this very special place has to offer.
The exterior of the home features a spacious yard for outdoor games, lounging, or just sitting on the deck and enjoying a favorite beverage while enjoying the amazing views and lake breezes. And if you’re lucky, you’ll have a visit from the eagles who live nearby!
Due to the lack of public transportation and the distance between towns/amenities, a car is pretty much essential. But, on the plus side, traffic is not a concept we have up here!
This home is dog friendly: While we make a considerable effort to clean up pet hair between guests, there may still be a few stray hairs in the home. While this home is lakefront, you cannot access beach from the property directly. Watch children and pets around bluff/lake edge, there is no fence. This home is in a heavily wooded area: seasonal bugs/pests are to be expected Short drive or bike ride to Herbster Beach, Bark Bay Slough, and the Herbster Boat Launch Short drive to Cornucopia beach, Meyers Beach, and the lovely beaches in Port Wing

Extraordinarily beautiful location! Beautiful property was very clean and very well maintained. I would actually love to stay at this property again during the summer to see what that season is like since there is a lot more going on and more activities during the summer!
This is the most beautiful, peaceful, quiet, serene and relaxing location we have ever been to. If you are looking to get away from it all, this is the place.
We loved our stay and didn’t want to leave. The property and lake views are amazing and the home is cozy and relaxing. Erin is great to work with and I have happily rented from her for the last two years and plan to again next year when we visit the area again!
We had a great time visiting Herbster and staying at this house. The sounds of the waves lapping on the shore with a fire in the fireplace while playing cards at the table was very relaxing.
The property is overall a nice spot. Most of the appliances were out of commission (dishwasher, clothes washer/dryer, ice maker), but overall we didn't care too much. The fireplace and fire pit are both nice! We saw eagles, blue jays and a bear right from the house.

Hi Isaac, we appreciate your feedback, but we do wish to note, the washer and dryer in this home have not been advertised as an amenity because they are not available, and neither is the ice maker. We do however apologize for the recent malfunction of the dishwasher, a new one is on order but did not come in time. We are glad you enjoyed the true benefits of this rural, woodland space....the wildlife and the beauty of outdoor living space. Thanks for coming!
Property was perfect for a sibling, cousin, daughter retreat. Lots of places for coming together as a group or for alone time.
Close to all the sights we wanted to take advantage of. Timing after Labor Day meant a few places were closed for theseasonmeant
We were a little disappointed that the king size bed was on the second floor. The LED lighting was poor. The big beautiful windows were dirty when the sunrise came through. The dishwasher was out of order. The water and ice dispenser did not work. Otherwise, everything else was really nice. So quiet and peaceful. Our four days there were a perfect way to spend our 50th anniversary.
The home is stunning and very comfortable. If you're coming up when there is a lot of snow, it may be wise to have 4 WD as Bark Point rd is long and was not plowed frequently during the snow-event. The tap water is cloudy. It tasted fine. I think this may be the norm for well water near the lake. Brink paper and kindling wood if you want a fire. There was plenty of cut wood, just no kindling. These are all mild issues. Our stay was fantastic!
The cabin was one-of-a-kind wonderful and our host was very helpful.

Why they chose this property
The South Shore The south shore is truly a place to get away from it all, but not so far from modern conveniences that getting food and gas feel like a chore. The guest book contains tips on all the incredible outdoor activities, local arts, and places to get groceries, dine out, grab a drink, etc. This is truly a year-round destination, whether you enjoy outdoor activities, local cuisine, art, or simply the company of friends & family in one of the most beautiful locations in the northern U.S.
The home is just a few minutes from the center of Cornucopia, which has a delightful general store/market, awesome coffee shop, bar/restaurant, and marina. Bayfield is about 35 minutes away, as is Washburn (where the largest grocery store is in the area). Ashland is about 45 minutes away (which has a natural foods co-op, Wal-Mart, and wider range of shops). Superior & Duluth are an hour and a bit away.
