Our stay started out beautifully. We rented this home in downtown McKinney to be near family for Thanksgiving. We’re familiar with historic homes—we’ve even renovated one nearby—so we appreciated the chic bathrooms, quality appliances, comfortable bedding, and thoughtful layout. Unfortunately, the hospitality didn’t match the home’s potential. At check-in, we found dirty light switches, a dirty freezer, bugs and hair in the bathrooms, and air filters needing replacement. The kitchen was sparsely stocked, and several pans were dirty or had burned food on them. We reported everything within hours and requested basics like paper towels and cleaning supplies; we were given a single roll and an old broom the next day.Things took a troubling turn after checkout. Within an hour, the host sent a hostile message accusing us of damaging the home. He claimed scratches on the unfinished floors were our doing, though they clearly came from the home’s own furniture, which had no felt pads. Despite this, he filed an unfounded 19,000 damage claim. We were also blamed for an “oil spill” that was simply a dropped piece of food on raw wood that stains easily—yet no cleaning products were provided. Most concerning, the host threatened to file a police report over an “illegal substance” supposedly used on his Ring camera—something that is actually a legal, over-the-counter product if we did not leave him a 5-star review. This felt intimidating and inappropriate, so I reported him to VRBO.
