The Sand Rabbit Beach House is located on Lions Park Drive. Walk to Silver Beach (Parent Magazine's Top 10 Family Beach) or Lions Park Beach. Walk everywhere--beach, downtown, Krasl Art Center, restaurants, bike trail, library, parks, festivals, Curious Kids Museum, etc.

This home was rehabbed from the oak floors to the roof recently. The large house is divided into two private units (each with their own kitchen, living and dinning room). There are three bedrooms upstairs and three bedrooms downstairs. There is a front and back porch and private balcony upstairs (winter lake views). The home is charming and comfortable with some hand painted floors. We strive for comfort and offer a spacious home where the whole family can visit and create memories.

There is a back porch and fenced backyard. Perfect for families with children. STEPS TO THE BEACH.


Details: The houses offers 6 bedrooms (3 queen beds, 4 twins, 1 full bed and one sleeper sofa) and 2 1/2 completely renovated bathrooms. Washer/dryer and A/C in each unit. Games, toys, puzzles available after a beach day.


Activities: Swimming! Sunbathing! Sunset watching. Beautiful, clean beaches, volleyball, people watching, Kayak rentals, biking, ride the trolley to quaint and charming St. Joseph, walk to dining, shopping, library (Internet access and great kid's department), walking/running/bike trail. Summer and fall festivals including the Krasil Fine Arts Show, Chalk on the Block, Antique Fair (first Sunday of the month). Many other attractions up and down the west coast of Michigan!

Area: Under 2 hours from Chicago, less than four from Detroit, an hour from Kalamzoo, approximately 3 hours from Indianapolis.

This is a perfect location for a vacation in St. Joseph! It is super close to the beach and the downtown. I did not get in my car once during our visit. The property is very accurately described and the two living spaces worked well. Jennifer, the host, was very responsive.

We have come here for years . We love the location and the timely response if there are any issues .It is an older home so we have learned to adjust our expectations . It works perfect for our family summer gatherings while some stay at the Boulevard in town ,we can still all gather at night to engage with one another.

Great stay

Great location and a nice house. Very easy walk to the beach or town and the path behind was nice feature for kids on bikes. Host was fantastic. I’d stay here again.

Summer Family Vacation

The house was absolutely perfect for our group. Loved that it was 2 separate rentals. Walking distance to beach and also to the events up on the bluff. Hardy used car, walked everywhere. Would totally rent this house again!

Good location for multi generational group. Close to town when weather got iffy but close enough to the beach and parks when the sun appeared. Owner easy to work with but its our third time renting here so we might be a little bias.

Location, Location.. LOCATION!

Ohh.. stunning little get away almost steps off the beach! Very comfortably fit 12 of us, with two different gathering spaces that was perfect in the evenings and afternoons with a dining space that comfortably fit us all. Very clean, cute.. and so close to the beach! Host maintained constant communication, strong WIFI.. no issues, wonderful week!

Beach Home Just Like Home

Tha rabbitt has been our preferred beach home for most of the last 10 years. Our beach home away from home. Plenty of room for multiple families kids and adults. Offers room for family style dining. Fenced back yard for privacy. Decks upstairs and down to relax, unwind and enjoy sunsets. You can park your car for the week and take a short walk to the beach,pizza and ice cream!

My daughter was married over Memorial Fay weekend near by and this place was just perfect for our immediate family to stay. It was just perfect with both units. It allowed us to all be close together. The home was close to the beach and town. It was clean and well kept. The owner was easily accessible. We would highly recommend this place for either one side or both.

Fantastic vacation and accommodations

Fantastic vacation and accommodations. Overall this vacation rental was absolutely fantastic. Six bedrooms and 2 1/2 baths accommodated all of our family members. Plenty of room in the dining room for everybody to eat dinner when we did eat inside. Fenced in backyard was perfect for our little guests. Upstairs and downstairs balconies for outdoor relaxation as well as a small deck in the back of the house. Parking in the back was perfect for our large family. Access to two different beaches was outstanding. The listing agent was nothing less than phenomenal. Quickly returns any text messages with any concerns that you might have. We are definitely going to rent this property again. If there is anything that I can say would improve our visit it would be a new refrigerator downstairs and seating accommodations in the backyard such as a picnic table. More toilet paper and more paper towels are definitely needed.

The outstanding feature of Sand Rabbit is its proximity to a beautiful Lake Michigan beach which can be reached in a short 5-minute walk and the descent to the beach is only about 10 to 15 feet albeit over a bit hazardous anti erosion large stone bank. It is close enough to haul your beach toys by hand back and forth to the lake. We found a variety of beach items like floaties, beach chairs, beach toys, apparently left by former renters, in the garage. If you ride your bike or hike, this location is great for places to ride and hike, along Silver Beach front, out to the breakwater, to downtown, a park along the river and a trail along the railroad tracks to a foot bridge over the railroad tracks south of the house. And there is an ice cream store for after dinner cones a short 15-minute walk to downtown and nearby benches at the top of the bluff overlooking Silver Beach on which to sit while consuming the cones and viewing the sunset. There is adequate and convenient off-street parking behind the house. The grill, being charcoal fired rather than with gas, was a bit of a disappointment. We did not use it. Check-in/out is quick and convenient via number coded locks on the doors. We found the porches at the back and front of the house reasonably equipped with tables and chairs and we spent a lot of time there. We found the hostess is always available and very quick responding via text messaging. In general, our 11 member 3-generation family reunion was a success.

What a wonderful location 5 star

Starting with the reservation everything was so very easy to do! Communication with the owner was quick and easy as we only had a few questions , no issues for 7 day's an 7 night,s stay. We had a 3 yr old, a 5yr old and 3- 9 yr olds and six adults. A very safe location at no time did we feel we had to lock anything up. The back yard was shady and wonderful for all the kids ((and us ) to hang out on the porch , front and back and upstairs balconies, At no time did want for space. a lot of room and very Comfortable, clean well supplied and two sets of washer and driers as we rented both the upstairs and down stairs. Internet was great no issues as we had two adults working during some of the days . Parking was great , no issues for three cars . We were so close to down town and the night life area we all walked everywhere all week. The beach was close very close, 200 yards maybe . Easy flat walk to the sand. We had a wagon for all the goodies and we left most of the umbrellas and things all day once we set up. We were not at the very busy area. What a great place. Decorated so nicely at the the Rabbit Thank you for a wonderful stay Jennifer! Will be back again.

Great location and porches

Besides the great location and lots of room to spread out, our favorite things were the porches. The front porch for morning coffee and evening drinks and ice cream. The back porch for getting our beach stuff ready for the day and cleaning it up (and the kids) at the end of the day.

Reunion in St joe's

We used this time to get together with a bunch of old friends and enjoy golf, the beach and all St Joe's has to offer. This place was a great location and was a perfect place to relax in the back yard, the deck or the porches after a long day on the town or on the beach. Check in was easy, the place was well maintained, and communications if I had any questions was easy and handled quickly. no complaints here.

Only a dozen steps down to the beach.

The property has a great location, only about 1/2 block walk over level ground to the beach area and then only about a dozen steps down to the beach which was never crowded during our stay. Lake Mich. water level was very high this year which severely limited beach walks. The property is also located within easy walking distance of the St. Joe municipal Beach and its truly remarkable splash pad., the Lake Michigan Breakwater, an art museum, a parks along the St. Joe River and the city's business district, which, is very visitor friendly. Also, we found great paths/routes for bicycle riding. and ample easy parking for our 3 vehicles. We ran into a number of minor issues with details of getting situated into and using the house but the owner was promptly responsive to our requests for help. Annoying was a refrigerator that badly needed a new door gasket (door would not close without being forced shut) and the inside light bulb was not functioning. The down stairs microwave was missing a proper rotary glass platter and would not rotate, and a pipe to the hose water spigot had burst so that we could not uses the hose to wash sand from our feet before entering the house. Also the downstairs TV was not working but our whole group was able to see the Olympics on the upstairs apartment TV. Also, the instructions on using the keys to access the apartment as well as the notification location of the Wi-Fi password need to be updated. The keyed doors have new PIN access locks on them but the older lockbox system is still attached to the doors and the instructions for access seem to be for the old lockbox system, somewhat confusing when upon first arriving and trying to gain access to the apartments. But for the most part these annoyances are overwhelmed by the overall great features and opportunities for great experiences that the property offers. Our group had a great time and truly enjoyed our stay.

Beware of old photos - Outdated and not worth the cost

Positives:The location was great. A block from the beach, short walk from the town. The owner responded to our texts. For the cost for a week we expected a nice, well-appointed house. The following is what we got:Negatives: -Not able to check in until 5 o'clock,when we got there the beds were unmade with old sheets, with the elastic stretched out on the fitted sheets. -We were told when we arrived not to use the outdoor spigot due to it "just breaking" and to please use a bucket of water from the garage - after looking at the pipe, it was clear the pipe burst over the winter and was taped to hold it. The tape finally gave way. -The ceiling in the twin bedroom on the first floor was leaking when we arrived, then when we took a shower, it leaked more. There was previous damage that wasn't fixed properly. When the owner was notified, she responded with trying to get a plumber there and asked us not to use the shower or that bedroom. So we paid for a 2.5 bath/6 bedroom house and only had 1.5 bath/5 bedrooms to use. After multiple questions and requests for photos from Jennifer, two days later a plumber showed up and after he "fixed" it and we waited 7 hours to use the shower, it was leaking worse than before. During that time he couldn't come in unless we were there and there were constant texts and requests from the owner while we were trying to enjoy our vacation. The plumber came back again and eventually fixed the leak and the outdoor leaking hose. -There was no gas grill. There was a cheap/rusty charcoal grill that needed the rust cleaned off the grills before we could use it.At this price point, this is unacceptable. -This is a duplex and nowhere in the listing is that mentioned. I re-read the listing multiple times. It was not convenient for us. -There is no place for the guests of the house to congregate. There is not seating inside or outside to eat at a table or even sit. -There are full trees/plants growing from gutters. -The entire place was unkempt, somewhat dirty, no window coverings on many windows. -The washer and dryer were dirty and old. The washer was actually an old coin operated washer from a laundromat. -Beds and pillows were all very uncomfortable and creaky. -The downstairs tv never worked and owner gave my phone number to the cable company who called and bothered us multiple times. -This house is not taken care of and the listing is misleading. We were never offered any componsation for the issues.

The Sand Rabbit was 'butt ugly' when it was purchased over 15 years ago. The enclosed front porch was removed and is now a lovely outdoor porch with wicker furniture. The upstairs was opened up and totally renovated including a new kitchen, bath and private new balcony. In addition to renovating distressed properties (and when I'm not taking a nap!), I'm a business owner, writer, yoga instructor, social worker and mother of two. I think I need a vacation like the rest of you!
