The Neighborhood:
St. Augustine has the distinction of being the oldest city in the US so there’s history everywhere you look, from the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument to the Mission Nombre De Dios. Combine the area’s rich history with beachcombing and incredible dining and you have a recipe for vacation paradise. The city streets are lined with gorgeous Spanish colonial and Moorish architecture, making it very different from your average beach town. Bring your camera and a pair of good walking shoes!

Make sure to spend a day exploring the historic city center by foot, bike, or on the Old Town Trolley. Discover the Ponce de Leon’s Fountain of Youth Archeological Park, a lush 15-acre park that overlooks the Matanzas River and St. Augustine Inlet with majestic live oaks and even some proud peacocks. Get a souvenir bottle of “Fountain of Youth” spring water and try your luck to see if it will work its magic on you. Wander over to the Castillo de San Marcos to explore the history of this massive stone fort (the oldest and largest in the U.S.) It’s owned by the National Park Service and although it’s a self-guided experience, there are rangers to answer questions and provide a glimpse into life at the fort through interpretive opportunities and demonstrations of old weaponry and tools. If pirates intrigue you, check out the St. Augustine Pirate and Treasure Museum, which brings the story of the city to life, complete with stories of real-life pirates who pillaged and plundered in the waters around the area.

When you get your fill of history, consider a visit to the Alligator Farm with the kids, where you can get very up close and personal with gators, toucans, emus, and seven different types of monkeys. Maximo, an impressive 15-foot, 1,250-pound crocodile is the Farm’s longest-living resident and you can hear his amazing life story here. Scare the pants off the adults in your group with a bona fide ghost tour and discover the secrets and stories from the Tolomato Cemetery. You might just catch a glimpse of one of St. Augustine’s famous haunts.

We can’t forget the miles (42 to be exact) of stunning beaches that make St. Augustine a popular destination with sun-seeking tourists. A solid choice is Anastasia State Park. Try out some water sports, like windsurfing or kayaking, or just spend a lazy afternoon on the sand marveling at the blue waves. It’s an ideal spot to spy some wildlife, from pelicans and osprey to playful dolphins. A store on the park property rents equipment to get you out in the surf. The nearby Vilano Beach is a haven for surfers due to its slightly higher waves and stronger currents. Try to get to the beach there at low tide and search for fossilized shark teeth. The town is a charming collection of Art Deco buildings, tiled fountains, and a retro pier in addition to some fantastic dining spots.

Speaking of dining, St. Augustine is a foodie paradise and boasts a wide range of cuisines, some from world-renowned chefs. In the Historic District, you can find The Floridian, run by chef Genie Mcnally, serving innovative and seasonal southern dishes with vegetarian options in an inviting atmosphere with outdoor seating. When you’re ready to go off the diet for good, swing by Cousteau’s Waffle and Milkshake Bar and indulge in a Belgian Liege waffle or a hand-spun milkshake in a plethora of sinful flavors like blackberry or chocolate with homemade brownie crumbles. After a day of sun-worshiping at the beach, fuel up at Mango Mango’s Bar and Grill with Caribbean-influenced fare and local seafood. They offer daily specials highlighting what’s fresh and an interesting beer menu, just steps away from the ocean.

When you’re ready to do some shopping, unearth some unique finds at Antiques and Things in the San Marco shopping district. This eclectic shop carries vintage jewelry, vinyl records, and antique furniture. You never know what you’ll find. If you’re looking for rentals, look no further than Mangrove Surf + Supply right on the A1A. You can rent surfboards, paddleboards (SUPs), bikes, beach chairs, umbrellas, skimboards, and bodyboards and they also offer surf lessons. Peruse their selection of men’s and women’s beach apparel before you head out for your beach day. Spend an afternoon in the San Marco shopping district and find gifts for everyone back home at Duddington’s, a quirky shop selling gifts, unique greeting cards, and vacation necessities. Be sure to make a pit stop at nearby Luli’s Cupcakes for a pick-me-up of award-winning jumbo cupcakes in one of 16 daily flavors.
