About the host
Hosted by Laura K. Benton
Mountain Adventure Retreats was founded on a deep-rooted passion for the San Juan Mountains and a shared commitment to excellence in hospitality and property care. The venture began in 2013, sparked by Laura’s long-standing love for Ouray County. A lifelong Coloradan who first discovered the Ridgway and Ouray area in 2001, Laura brought with her an extensive background in business, marketing, and travel management. Her years of experience in the ski and property management industries across North America’s premier destinations provided the foundation for a company built on community and exceptional service.
In 2020, the team expanded when Steve moved from Dallas to join Laura in Ouray County. Steve’s arrival marked the beginning of a new chapter for the company, bringing forty-three years of high-level construction management experience to the team. Having served as Vice President for some of the nation’s top General Contractors, he integrated professional expertise in budgeting, procurement, and project oversight into the company’s property maintenance and caretaking operations. His own connection to the state dates back to 1993, when participating in Ride the Rockies ignited a lifelong passion for Colorado’s dramatic landscapes.
Today, Laura and Steve work side-by-side to lead a dedicated team of professionals focused on delivering top-tier property care. When they aren't overseeing the finer details of a guest's stay or maintaining local residences, they are often found embracing the outdoors together. Whether they are cycling, skiing, hiking, or fishing, they remain inspired by the ever-changing seasons and the rugged beauty of the San Juan Mountains.

Why they chose this property
Nestled in the heart of the "Switzerland of America," Blue Haven offers a front-row seat to the historic charm and rugged beauty of Ouray. Staying here means being immersed in a walkable mountain community where the jagged peaks of the San Juan Mountains frame every street corner. You are steps away from the Victorian architecture of Main Street, home to local boutiques, artisanal eateries, and cozy coffee shops that define the town's welcoming character.
The neighborhood serves as a premier basecamp for outdoor enthusiasts, providing immediate access to the Ouray Perimeter Trail and the world-renowned Ouray Ice Park. After a day of exploring the Uncompahgre Gorge or trekking to Cascade Falls, the famous Ouray Hot Springs Pool is just a short stroll away for a restorative soak. This central location eliminates the need for driving, allowing your group to fully experience the rhythmic pace of mountain life, from rooftop sunsets to the quiet, star-filled nights unique to this high-alpine retreat.

What makes this property unique
Blue Haven distinguishes itself as a premier gathering point where the spirit of the San Juan Mountains meets the welcoming character of Ouray. Rather than just a place to stay, the property functions as a true community hub, offering a spacious five-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom layout designed to bring people together. By accommodating up to ten guests, it serves as a rare sanctuary in the historic district where large groups of friends, extended families, or outdoor enthusiasts can congregate under one roof without sacrificing comfort or privacy. The home’s strategic location on Oak Street encourages guests to fully immerse themselves in the local rhythm of the Switzerland of America, where life is defined by easy, walkable connections to the heart of the community. Just steps from the front door, the Uncompahgre Riverwalk serves as the town's natural artery for morning strolls, while a short walk leads to the iconic Ouray Hot Springs Pool, the town’s central social anchor.
The logistical convenience of the property further enhances the group experience, providing a level of ease rarely found in mountain towns. In a village known for narrow streets, Blue Haven provides ample space for multiple vehicles and dedicated trailer parking, making it an essential asset for OHV groups and Jeepers arriving to explore the backcountry together. This accessibility, paired with its proximity to the shops and breweries of Main Street, ensures that the logistical side of a mountain getaway remains seamless. With a sophisticated bedding arrangement featuring a King and three Queens, Blue Haven serves as a refined basecamp that honors the rugged call of the mountains while prioritizing the shared memories and social connections that define a true Colorado retreat.
