About the host
Hosted by Laura K. Benton
Mountain Adventure Retreats was founded on a deep-rooted passion for the San Juan Mountains and a shared commitment to excellence in hospitality and property care. The venture began in 2013, sparked by Laura’s long-standing love for Ouray County. A lifelong Coloradan who first discovered the Ridgway and Ouray area in 2001, Laura brought with her an extensive background in business, marketing, and travel management. Her years of experience in the ski and property management industries across North America’s premier destinations provided the foundation for a company built on community and exceptional service.
In 2020, the team expanded when Steve moved from Dallas to join Laura in Ouray County. Steve’s arrival marked the beginning of a new chapter for the company, bringing forty-three years of high-level construction management experience to the team. Having served as Vice President for some of the nation’s top General Contractors, he integrated professional expertise in budgeting, procurement, and project oversight into the company’s property maintenance and caretaking operations. His own connection to the state dates back to 1993, when participating in Ride the Rockies ignited a lifelong passion for Colorado’s dramatic landscapes.
Today, Laura and Steve work side-by-side to lead a dedicated team of professionals focused on delivering top-tier property care. When they aren't overseeing the finer details of a guest's stay or maintaining local residences, they are often found embracing the outdoors together. Whether they are cycling, skiing, hiking, or fishing, they remain inspired by the ever-changing seasons and the rugged beauty of the San Juan Mountains.
Why they chose this property
Nestled in the heart of the San Juan Mountains, the Whispering Pines neighborhood offers a warm and inviting escape that perfectly captures the spirit of Colorado mountain living. Life here moves at a gentler pace, where the rustle of the wind through the trees and the occasional visit from local elk and deer are the only interruptions to the quiet. It is the kind of place where neighbors value both their privacy and a friendly wave, creating a stable, close-knit community that feels like home from the moment you arrive.
Beyond the peaceful atmosphere, the area is a gateway to natural wonder, with the dramatic peaks of the Sneffels Range providing a breathtaking backdrop for daily life. Whether you are spending a crisp morning on the nearby Oak Creek trails or taking a short drive to soak in the Ouray Hot Springs, the neighborhood serves as a cozy basecamp for adventure. With its spacious lots and starry night skies, this community offers a rare balance of rugged alpine beauty and a welcoming, small-town heart.
What makes this property unique
This haven stands out as a unique mountain retreat because of its thoughtful evolution and its surprisingly spacious layout for the area. Originally built in 1972 and extensively updated in 2005, the home blends classic alpine charm with more modern comforts. While many of the original cabins in Whispering Pines are smaller 2- or 3-bedroom footprints, this property offers a much more generous 5-bedroom, 3-bathroom configuration. The interior is designed in a welcoming ranch style that maximizes natural light, featuring a blend of hardwood, tile, and laminate flooring that feels both elegant and practical for mountain life.
What truly makes the property special is how it embraces its natural surroundings. The home features a finished basement and a cozy wood-burning pellet stove, creating multiple warm gathering spaces for snowy Colorado evenings. Outside, the large 0.53-acre lot is dotted with mature trees and features expansive decking, providing a front-row seat to the dramatic San Juan mountain views and frequent visits from local wildlife. Its location is a "best of both worlds" scenario—it feels deeply secluded among the pines, yet sits just over two miles from the historic heart of Ouray, giving you immediate access to the "Switzerland of America" without the noise of the main town center.
