The Space Located on 66 acres of rolling farmland and wooded countryside, this restored log cabin - built circa 1855 - is rustic but not the least bit primitive. A massive stone fireplace makes relaxing in the winter cozy. Enjoy your morning coffee with a beautiful view of Ohio farmland from the screened-in porch. Jump into the outdoor shower or hot tub after a day of hiking or shopping in nearby Yellow Springs. Centrally located, the Cabin is just 20 minutes from Dayton and 50 minutes from Columbus. This 19th century log cabin - original to the property - was dismantled and restored in 1989. Various updates over the years keep the Cabin fresh without compromising its rustic qualities. Guest Access The Cabin is located on a working farm where we raise hay and Corriente cattle. Guests may walk the property, enjoy the hot tub located a few yards from the Cabin and fish in the catch-and-release pond. Sarah provides charcoal, lighter fluid and a retro Weber kettle grill for outside cooking. The fire pit nearby is a fun place to roast marshmallows and tell stories. Two bicycles on site are available for guests who want to ride the Ohio to Erie bike trail, which is just a mile from the farm entrance. Other Things to Note The Cabin is a homey, comfortable place — nothing fussy, nothing untouchable. We expect you to put your feet up, take a deep breath and relax while you’re there.

About the host
Hosted by Sarah Courtright
I suppose most hosts say they love meeting people - and I do. But I have hosted guests at Green Plains Cabin since 1999! One article I read suggested that most hosts leave the industry after eight years. So if market presence is any indicator, I have found my calling. More importantly, it's enabled me to keep the cabin in perfectly maintained condition to share with friends, family and guests. I'm a third generation Swede in the US and grew up in a tiny, Swedish town in central Illinois. The fellas who restored the cabin suggested that it was build by Swedes based on the corner notching style. So Swedish design elements figure largely in my furnishing and decor choices. Living out my Swedish heritage is part of what has kept me engaged over the long haul. My husband, Glen, raises hay and cattle on the farm. We built a new home for ourselves on the property in 2020 so we are available at a moment's notice if guests have questions or needs.
Why they chose this property
Located on the western edge of the Virginia Military Survey (VMS), this land has been in the family for generations. Quakers settled the area in the 18th & 19th centuries and it is the home to several Underground Railway sites. There is even a Civil War cemetery adjacent to the property.
I love the history, love watching our Corriente cattle roam the rolling pastures, and love the fireflies in the summer! While enjoying the country, I like that we are close to "civilization" - Yellow Springs is a fun and funky little town nearby (and home to Dave Chappelle), and South Charleston is a nice little town very near where you can find a grocery store, gas station, bank, a couple of quaint shops and pizza!
What makes this property unique
My guests frequently remark that, when they stay at the cabin, even though they are close to services on which we all have come to rely, they feel like they have slowed down and gone back in time. It's those hand-hewn logs, the screened porch, the tire swing, life slowing down...you could be staying in a cabin a thousand miles away! But most of my guests live within 75 miles. How great is that?!
