About the host
Hosted by Collette
We are so excited you are choosing to stay in our little home-away-from-home. We are a large, outdoor-loving, nature-enthused, sunshine-seeking family of 8. Collette was born and raised in Virginia not far from Colonial Beach. She spent many weekends canoeing and camping along the Rappahannock River and many other tributaries off the Chesapeake Bay. Summers always included fireworks, crab feasts, and sandy fun at Colonial Beach. Jamie was born and raised in South Carolina and coastal adventures were the highlight of his youth. We are proudly sharing this love of the water and the beauty of the East Coast with our children and now we are honored to share it with you. We are thrilled to be able to offer our little hideaway near the water to you and your crew and hope you discover the peace and contentment of the natural world nearby.
Why they chose this property
Placid Bay Estates is adjacent to Mattox Creek and Placid Lake. This tributary of the Potomac River is near the colonial stagecoach stop of Oak Grove. It lies between, and minutes from, the birthplaces of George Washington and James Monroe. Being situated in an area rich in American history and American heritage has led to the Potomac River being nicknamed "the Nation's River." Today Mattox Creek is a beautiful wildlife and recreation area used for boating, skiing, fishing and swimming. Bald eagles, ospreys, herons, beavers, foxes, deer and migrating waterfowl are abundant in the area. The area has been protected and improved by the Chesapeake Bay Act, which has made wetland protection and environmental issues a priority in the entire Chesapeake Bay watershed.
What makes this property unique
Grey Heron Hideaway was named for the distinctive plumage of the Great Blue Heron, the iconic wading bird native to the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The house was built in 1964 and fully refurbished in 2022.
