About this property
Butterfly House: Modern Home, Direct Mountain Views, 1 Acre, Near Santa Fe Opera
Welcome to your Santa Fe dream home! Architecturally significant, The Butterfly House is a re-creation of a classic case-modern home with wings, ample glass, and sloped ceilings. Completed in summer of 2012, this one-story home sits on one acre of secluded property with unobstructed views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The Butterfly House, designed by AIA's 2011 Design Firm of the Year Spears Horn, was featured in the 2012 Design Santa Fe Tour of Homes. It offers the serenity of peace and quiet surrounded by native trees and plants, neighbors the Santa Fe Opera and is within a few minutes drive of the shops, restaurants, museums and galleries surrounding the Santa Fe Plaza.
The house is 1700 square feet of mid-century modern interiors, with a split design, and each of the two bedrooms has a full en suite bathroom. Each bedroom has a queen-sized bed, night tables, reading lights, ceiling fan, and views of aspen, pinon, and juniper trees. The media room and master bedroom both have flat-screen TV's. The kitchen shines with black granite countertops, an island with bar stools, and top-of-the-line appliances. Relaxing in the living room means gazing at the Sangre de Cristo mountains. The patio, which features a table and chairs, two chaise lounges, and a gas grill, is accessible from both the living area and the master suite, and looks northeast, directly at the gorgeous Sangre de Cristo Mountains and the peaks of the Colorado Rockies. The patio is covered in the warm-weather months to protect from the strong sun. Other features include air conditioning, high ceilings, a wood-burning fireplace and an over-sized shower with a bench in the master bath. Expansive windows throughout the house allow you to enjoy the breathtaking view from multiple room, and the multi-colored sky at sunrise and sunset. The home is deliberately oriented and constructed to assure optimal natural heating and cooling, and has state of the art high powered ceiling fans in every room to provide comfort year round.
For your New Mexico ski experience, the Santa Fe Ski Basin is 30 minutes away and the city of Taos is approximately 90 minutes away. The nearby Hyde Park National Forest and Santa Fe National Forest offer dozens hiking trails of varying distances and challenge levels. For two-wheeling enthusiasts, a bike trail greets you down the road from the house and leads you into town.
For art enthusiasts, Canyon Rd, with its streets lined with galleries, is 10 minutes away. The famed Museum Hill is 15 minutes away. Santa Fe's world renowned restaurants are minutes away.
The design concept of this residence provides a vibrant entry and open living concept. The house was designed to reflect an environment of health and repose within the surrounding high desert of north Santa Fe.

About the host
Hosted by Julia Forgash

We are from the Chicago. We built this home in Santa Fe to express our love for mid-century modern architecture. We spend a lot of our time outdoors---hiking, biking, and sailing on Lake Michigan. We appreciate the arts and are regular patrons of theater and musical performances. We love sharing the home we created and the beauty of the natural setting in order to give others the opportunity to enjoy the history, the art, the people, the food, and the peaceful atmosphere of Santa Fe, and come home to relax with modern decor against a spectacular, mountainous landscape.
Why they chose this property
We chose this location for our home because of the magnificent views from the property. The home looks directly at the Sangre de Cristo mountains. The home sits on one acre of land surrounded by native trees and plants. The neighborhood offers the ideal combination of extreme quiet while easily accessible to all our favorite Santa Fe activities---downtown and in the mountains. We never need to drive far to do what we love.
What makes this property unique
What makes our property most unique is the unobstructed view of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Our home also balances modern simplicity with the traditional materials of Santa Fe design. The home was designed by Spears Horn Architects, recipient of several Design Awards from the New Mexico chapter of the American Institute of Architects. The house was designed with materials that ensure comfort and energy efficiency, while presenting modern design details that complement the natural Santa Fe landscape.
