About this property
Close to Penn State & Whipple's Dam - Pet Friendly!
Enjoy the comfort and accessibility of our cozy cabin—just minutes away from all the action! Slate Cabin is conveniently located along Rt. 26, caddy-corner to Dones Bone’s BBQ and only 13 miles from Penn State University. It’s the perfect destination for anyone seeking a balance of tranquility and PSU/State College excitement.
The cabin sits on a full acre of land, with a parking lot on one side of the stream and the house/driveway on the other.
Not only are we close to Penn State, but we’re just 0.7 miles from Whipple Dam State Park and Stone Valley is just a little farther! Whether you’re into hiking, swimming, fishing, hunting, or picnicking, our cabin is the prime destination for a weekend escape.
Inside the Cabin
Our space is warm and welcoming, featuring:
A cozy living room with a wood-burning stove (check availability), a 50" flat-screen TV, and throw blankets and pillows for relaxing nights.
Heated floors in both the bathroom and kitchen.
A lovely dining area that comfortably seats 4.
High-speed Wi-Fi throughout.
The kitchen comes fully equipped with modern amenities: refrigerator/freezer, stove, oven, dishwasher, microwave, toaster, Keurig coffee maker, and a large sink. We’ve stocked it with dishes (silverware, cups, plates, bowls, pots, and pans) along with complimentary coffee, teas, dish soap, upon request.
Bedrooms & Bathroom
First floor bedroom: 1 California King Bed
Upstairs bedrooms: one with 1 Queen Bed, another with 2 Twin Beds
Bathroom: newly renovated, featuring a large shower, toilet, sink, heated floors, plenty of towels, and complimentary soap and shampoo.
There’s also a washer and dryer on the first floor, with a conservative supply of laundry detergent provided.
Outdoor Features
Large driveway/parking lot for up to 6 vehicles.
A quaint bridge that crosses Slate Cabin Run, leading directly to the front door.
A large screened-in porch and outdoor grill—perfect for family cookouts.
Optional seasonal rentals: bikes, kayaks, fly fishing rods, and a canoe (available for an additional fee).
Important Notes
Age & Aroma: The cabin is in the woods and is over 120 years old. Because of this, it does have the scent of the 120 year old hand hewn beams. Many people enjoy the scent, but if you are sensitive to smells or have allergies, please do not book this property if that would bother you. There is absolutely no mold, etc., but the beams do give off a very faint rustic “old cabin” wood aroma.
Critter Season: This is the time of the year that outside critters start trying to find places to sleep! Because of this we do have rodent poison around the cabin and under appliances/furniture. While we have not had any issues, there is always the chance that a critter sneaks in through an open door, etc. **Please make sure doors remain shut to avoid this.** Please also avoid any children or pets going under furniture or appliances.
Wasp Spray: We will have bottles of wasp spray on the front porch for summer months, although we haven’t seen many bees/wasps for some time.
Windows & AC: If you use the Central Air, please close all the windows. You may use the air conditioner or the small window upstairs but please do not try to open the bedroom windows in the upstairs bedrooms.
How to Reach Us: If you have any issues, questions, etc. please message in the app. If you call/text it may take much longer for our staff to respond. However, we will respond quickest in the app.
Damage Policy: Lastly, before each stay, we check that everything is in working order and there are no rips, tears, spills, stains, etc. on anything. Should something happen during your stay that damages something, we’d rather you notify us right away rather than us having to charge for damages that we were not told about. You are also encouraged to let us know if you see anything that is wrong upon checkin.
Complaint Policy: We will not tolerate complaints about any of the above if you decide to book this property. Please inspect the property upon arrival and if there is anything unsatisfactory, please notify us upon arrival. We can always have someone come out to fix anything that is unsatisfactory. Understand that we will not tolerate renters complaining after their stay when we could have made things right. Please do not expect a refund or cancellation of your stay if you do not notify us right away if anything is unsatisfactory. It is an old, charming property that deserves renters who will enjoy their time!
We truly appreciate you taking care of our little cabin—and we hope you enjoy your stay!

CPAREG owns a number of properties around the area with a specialty in historic and charming houses.
Why they chose this property
We LOVE the location of this cabin because it is situated in the middle of 1,000's of acres of wooded forest. Close to Penn State, State College, Whipple's Dam, Stone Valley, Lake Perez, and Shaver's Creek!
What makes this property unique
This cabin was built in 1900 on an old shale pit. The cabin housed workers who worked on Whipple's Dam and is one of the oldest standing structures in the area!
