The property is home to white tail deer, mule deer, wild turkeys, maybe even an elk! Truly a Home on the Range located in Open Range country. You may encounter real cowboys on horseback herding cattle along the county road!

Home on the Range is located in the Black Hills of Wyoming minutes away from miles of trails in the national forest. 40 minutes from Devil's Tower, 30 from Spearfish SD and less than an hour from Sturgis and the motorcycle rally. 15 minutes from Sundance and less than 10 miles from I 90 for convenient access. 21 acres of forest and meadows to explore, and you can bring your dog or even your horse!

Enjoy free Friday night street concerts in Spearfish, farmer's market and walking history tours in Sundance, the motorcycle rally in Sturgis, car shows at Devil's Tower and Deadhorse and more. Or, visit Mt. Rushmore, historic Deadwood, caves and mueums. Or, just stay and enjoy the absolute quiet while watching the night sky with no light pollution at all. Make this your destination vacation or a perfect stopover on road trips to Yellowstone or other western icons.

The main part of the home has 2 bedrooms, bath, kitchen and living room. The garage conversion has a great room with a small wet bar area, a queen bed, full bath and a TV room with bunk beds. It also features a glass garage door which can be opened in nice weather to the shaded patio with patio furniture and a gas grill

Home on the Range can handle 12 guests; if you need more, ask about extra sleeping spaces or camping in the yard. We like big family groups!

And, NO cleaning fee. (just don't make me tell your mother you left a mess!)

This is such a nice place to come after a long day of sightseeing. It is so nice to relax on the porch, watch the deer and listen to the coyotes. Had a great time and the hosts were exceptionally helpful. When we plan our next visit we would like to stay here again.

Absolutely loved our stay. Plenty of wildlife each evening, stunting views, super comfy beds. Great communication from the owner. We were in town for the Sturgis 2025 85th rally, we put over 1000 miles on our bike while we were there. Close to many attractions. We love the town of Sundance. We are definitely coming back to stay again.

Wyoming getaway

The cabin was a great place to stay. It is peaceful, lots of area to walk around outside and loved sitting outside in the evenings. The beds were very comfortable, good supply of towels, and the kitchen is adequately supplied with dishes, etc. We would definitely stay here again.

Hide away

Located out in the country and the house is very large. The house was clean. Problems with TV signals and no air conditioner to keep in mind unless its winter. The owner was very nice and helpful.

Loved it!

We travel to Wyoming this time every year. We truly enjoyed our stay. We got to experience the beauty of the area & enjoyed hiking with our dogs. The wildlife literally came up to the cabin. The cabin was cozy as we had temperatures from 32 to 95 degrees during our stay. I cannot express how comfortable the accommodations were. Definitely making this our return destination!

Tranquility

If you want peace and quiet this is the place for you, absolutely stunning property. Well equipped, clean and comfortable. The wifi is weak but that didn't deter us as there was a visitor center a few miles up the road with free wifi, not sure about cell coverage as I don't own a cell phone. Near Devils Tower and Deadwood. I would give home on the range 5/5 gold stars

Was probably our best experience yet!

My wife and I have a very busy life and she is very social. We have eight children. Five of our children are off living their lives outside of our home and we are left with 9-year-old triplets and our 3 and 1/2-year-old German Shepherd to which my wife and I, the triplets and our German Shepherd Diesel was allowed to stay here. There was no TV. There was plenty of games, there was the most amazing scenery, we did not have the best cell phone service which made it even better, our big kids have got more of our time , and it was nice to put the phones down and spend it with the younger children. We especially appreciate that we were able to bring our 3 and 1/2-year-old male German Shepherd. He had a great time on this property. It was amazing. We all loved it. We highly recommend that if you want some family time and a great place that is amazing and so many things within the area to do to book this place because it was amazing!

About the host

Hosted by David or Kathryn Johnson

Host profile image
Kathryn and I (David) have had been places and done things. We've lived in Washington, California, Alaska, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska (again!) and now here in Wyoming. In between we have had short stays in Iowa, Minnesota and South Dakota.

I've been a teacher and salesperson. Kathryn has been a mom to 4 kids, then went back to school for a Master's degree in science. That led to studying Grizzly bears in Alaska among other things.

Along the way we remodeled every house we've ever owned and even built one. We had a commercial salmon fishing boat, learned how to drive draft horses and explored all over this country and one or two others.

This is our third vacation rental.

Why they chose this property

We like having a unique house in a unique area. Our place is the second smallest parcel in miles at 21 acres. We are surrounded by large ranch parcels and Black Hills National Forest. It is absolutely quiet and has virtually no light pollution at night.

What makes this property unique

Our property is unique among vacation rentals in the area because it has room for larger groups, is very private, and yet is only 15 minutes from Sundance and 30 minutes to Spearfish.
