Casa Varela is located next to the small forest that formed and grew in that protected area. Today, our visitors can enjoy a cozy wooden cabin and immerse themselves in the surrounding nature.

Saray Varela Quesada was born in La Fortuna and is the granddaughter of Rufino Quesada and Isolina Hidalgo, the first Costa Rican settlers who arrived in La Fortuna. In the year 1968, Saray was a firsthand witness to the first eruption of the Arenal Volcano. In 1982, Saray married Engineer James Castillo, and as a result, her parents passed down a 30,000 square meter piece of land to her. She and her husband decided to designate protected areas on the land and establish a location to build their future home. This is Casa Varela.
