Cozy and Charming Apple Blossom Retreat—Relax with Nature
Entering our country lane, you’ll begin to settle into the quieter pace of West Sonoma County life. Here we have the luxury of attuning ourselves to the rhythm of the natural world. You may see a family of deer (lately the does have been showing their fawns around the property), or if you are lucky a furtive fox, bobcat or soaring red tail hawk. But even in this country paradise we are only an hour away from the urban delights of San Francisco, twenty minutes from Santa Rosa, and eight minutes from downtown Sebastopol.
From here you can easily spend your days walking, jogging or surfing at gorgeous Pacific coast beaches, hiking in old growth redwoods, discovering world class wineries, exploring the many art galleries in our neighboring towns, browsing in unique boutiques featuring the works of local artisans, biking through the vineyards, kayaking the Russian River, dining in Zagat-rated restaurants, small, local bistros or oyster bars along the coast, or just relaxing here at Apple Blossom Retreat.
The cozy, wood-shingled studio, surrounded by wisteria, apple trees, and flowers on the two-acre property is your home away from home. It is attached to our larger, country home where we live right next door, but you are completely private with your own separate entrance. Your studio and our house are separated by an 8 foot utility/laundry area. We are right here if you need anything, but we completely respect your privacy and desire for peace and quiet.
There is a small garden patio for your personal use where you can sip coffee in the morning or enjoy a glass of wine after a day of exploring hidden wineries. On sunny days, curled up in a comfy armchair with a book, you can bask in sunlight pouring through the expanse of southern exposure windows; on rainy winter days you can watch the row of poplars dance in the wind.
We’ve made the spacious living room both comfortable and beautiful, adding a few country antiques from my beloved Midwest family home. The centerpiece of the room though is a stunning, antique Japanese screen that creates your private bedroom. There you can luxuriate in the queen bed with high thread count sheets and piles of fluffy pillows. The sounds you may hear are reminders of simple, country life: the screech of a barn owl out for a night hunt, coyotes on a far away ridge yipping at the full moon, or perhaps the distant crow of a rooster. We also have Wi-Fi, cable TV, and a DVD player for those wanting to be more connected.
There is a fully equipped kitchenette with refrigerator, coffee maker, toaster oven, microwave, and a state of the art induction hot plate.
The studio cottage works well for a variety of Sonoma County travelers: adventurers wanting to explore the area, couples seeking a romantic retreat, or individuals seeking a quiet refuge for study, writing, artistic pursuits, or quiet contemplation.
At the end of the day enjoy a massage or enzyme bath at nearby beautiful Osmosis Day Spa, surrounded by an immaculate Asian garden, or just come on home and relax.
We look forward to meeting you and sharing the magic of Sonoma County.
PS - All the wildlife photos you see here were actually taken on the property, usually no more than 100 feet from the front door.

This was a very comfortable place with very attentive hosts when we needed help. the bed and pillows and loveseat and chair all comfy. There is lots of light from windows so always was cheery. The kitchen area is minimal but we cooked at the home of a family member in town. And such a delightful town to be in! We’d definitely go back next time to stay in this place next time we are in the area
Great hosts, kind and helpful. Beautifully appointed and clean. The location is beautiful and secluded. For some it would feel isolated, but we enjoyed the peacefulness and natural beauty of the place. Sebastopol is acharming town to explore.
Clean, quiet, peaceful. Just what we wanted. Susan was available for restaurant recommendations, questions about WiFi—the gamut. Kitchenette with coffeemaker, microwave, and fridge made breakfast prep easy. Recommend!
Great place and great hospitality from Susan and Gary. the wife and I had a great week with them, perfect place to stay its 20 minute drive to any where you need to be! Awesome place to stay highly recommend!!
Wonderful hosts in a wonderful property close to Sebastopol and the great wine valleys yet tucked away in a quiet retreat. Best of both worlds and best of hosts.
We had a restful and restorative three days close to sustainable restaurants in both Sebastopol and Bodega Bay. Our hosts were welcoming and attentive.
Lovely property. Clean accommodations, comfortable bed and gracious hosts.
I would recommend this rental to friends wanting peace and quiet yet not far from town with great restaurants nearby.

About the host
Hosted by Susan Sattler
My husband, Gary, and I have been best friends since we met in Sonoma County in 1984. Outdoor enthusiasts, we love to hike, bike, kayak, canoe, swim, backpack, cross country ski, and run (well, Gary still does that)! But we also enjoy attending the symphony, theater in San Francisco, and of course gourmet food! A fine artist, Gary loves the vibrant artistic community in Sonoma County, and he will share with you the secrets of where to visit artists working in their studios. He loves the quality of the light here and the beauty of the natural world. A psychotherapist and teacher, I appreciate the focus many people here have on personal growth, health, wellness, and consciousness-raising. As a writer, I love the quiet peaceful feel of the land. We have a son who owns a design and fabrication studio in Brooklyn, NY, and a daughter who works in advertising and marketing in Kansas City, MO.
Why they chose this property
We were entranced with the beauty of the rolling, coastal hills, dotted with vineyards, apple orchards and dairy ranches. We love the versatility of this area. On any chosen day we can go to a gorgeous Sonoma Coast beach, walk through an old growth redwood forest, hike past thundering waterfalls to a viewpoint on a high ridge overlooking the ocean, mountain bike to swim in a lake, or backpack along the coast.
If you enjoy water adventuring, we can point you to the outfitters who offer kayak and canoe rentals for exploring the Russian River and nearby Tomales Bay. And please don't forget, we are less than a half-hour drive from Point Reyes National Seashore—an actual, local National Park (https://www.nps.gov/pore/index.htm).
But there are also artisans of all varieties, live music and theater, gourmet food, and boutique shopping. And to top it all off, the Sierras are only three hours away, and San Francisco is an hour down the road.
What makes this property unique
Some of the best Sonoma County secrets we can direct you to are world renowned Osmosis Day Spa in a country setting, surrounded by bamboo and an immaculate Asian garden, our local organic bakery with brick ovens which makes the best bread this side of the Golden Gate Bridge, Safari West Wild Animal Park where you can ride a jeep to see everything from giraffes to cheetahs or hook this onto a bike ride through the vineyards, the best Sonoma County homemade ice cream at Screamin’ Mimi’s in Sebastopol, the roller coasters at Six Flags, the amazing California Carnivores, the largest carnivore plant nursery in North America, Silk Moon boutique where you will feel like a traveler in foreign lands, and wineries and bistros too numerous to mention by name here.
