Cozy farm cabin for 2 adults and 2 small dogs on a roadtrip. The hosts provided good amenities that made our stay nice. We saw wild turkeys and groundhogs on walks around the farm. Short drive to downtown shops, restaurants, hiking areas and Lake Junaluska.

Good things: The master bed was very comfortable. There was lots of privacy. Hot tub was nice. Host was very kind and responsive. Stream was nice when it rained. Plenty of towels.Things not so good: the bridge over the stream and stairs going into the house were slimy and slippery. There were 2 porch roof leaks, one right over where you entered the house. Says laundry, but no washer dryer. No dishwasher, our miss. Way too small for 2 adults and 2 dogs. Place was dark, rugs and sofa fabric were very tired, worn. Shower very small, shower curtain kept falling off the rings. Railing around hot tub was separated from post with screws exposed. Lots of brush up work needs to be done, in my opinion.

Thank you for your review, Caron, but I did want to address some things that you left out. It literally rained every day you were here, so yes, wooden bridges and stairs get slippery. Slimy? No, that entire house/deck/stairs was just pressure washed two weeks ago. You and I discussed the porch roof leaking, and I explained to you that it was scheduled to be replaced in the late fall when my bookings slow down. We already have a contractor lined up for this work, as I mentioned to you. The roof is leaking where it meets the cabin and the water is coming through only on the porch, not inside the house, as you seemed to imply. My listing does not say that there is a washer/dryer. It states that there is a coin laundry nearby. My listing also states in several locations the size of the cabin, so not sure why that would have been a surprise. Your comments on the "darkness" of the cabin and that the rugs and sofa are worn are unfair. We are pet friendly, and as such, cannot purchase new rugs and furniture constantly. We don't charge pet fees because we know guests love to travel with their dogs. We keep our prices fair so guests can come and enjoy our property and the area. The pictures on our listing are fair representations of the cabin and were taken on my cell phone, so nothing has been done to try to make it look any way but how it is. Again, not sure why you would be describing the cabin negatively when you should have viewed all the pictures before booking.

Second stay here at Howell’s at The Moon Farm…we absolutely love this cabin, and the area. A short drive to Waynesville and the Maggie Valley/Cherokee area but you feel like you’re secluded by the creek at 3,000 feet. Hot tub is clean and always a PLUS!

Beautiful property! Like the description says its a small house, but don't let that scare you off. Its a cute, clean cabin on a gorgeous and quiet spot. Its also a short trip into town, about 5 minutes (maybe 10 depending on your luck with traffic/lights) to Lake Junaluska. The kitchen was well stocked with dishes/pans, we had an abundance of towels, and the king sized bed was so comfy! I think its the only time my husband and I agreed about a mattress. We had three people (2 adults and a teenager) and loved our stay, we'd absolutely stay here again. My only recommendation would be to bring a flashlight for nighttime bathroom breaks if your dog is like mine and needs to sniff around for the perfect potty spot. There are porch lights, but the flashlight helped.

My husband and I had the most wonderful stay at this cabin for our honeymoon! The host was incredibly kind and welcoming—she surprised us with a bottle of champagne and a candle, which made our stay feel extra special. She even made sure the hot tub was already running when we arrived so we could enjoy it right away. The cabin was spotless and absolutely perfect for our stay. The property itself is beautiful, and there was so much to do in the surrounding area. We couldn’t have asked for a better place to celebrate such a special time and will definitely be booking again. Highly recommend!

We loved the place. I think we spent most of our stay around the fire pit. We found a place close by that gave out free firewood. I loved the hot tub and the wooded area. Can't wait to come back. Thank you for everything.

About the host

Hosted by Judy Howell

Host profile image

John and Judy Howell were working for the government in the DC area, and got married in Maggie Valley, NC. They fell in love with the area and began to look for property. They feel completely blessed to have found this beautiful slice of heaven, which they named Howells at the Moon Farm.

Why they chose this property

This property is so unique. It was an old farm and in the same family until early 2000. It's on 13 acres, surrounded by fields and forests, with mountain views. You will feel like you are in a private haven surrounded by nature, but you are in fact minutes away from towns, shopping and activities. It is, truly, the best of both worlds. This property has hiking trails, long range mountain views, mountain streams, and privacy.

What makes this property unique

From the front porch of the cabin, you can sit with a glass of wine or hot cup of coffee, and gaze at the mist in the woods and hear the leaves rustling. Just listen to the sounds of nature and watch the fireflies dance in the evening. You will forget how hectic life can be when everything here is so tranquil. The cabin is cozy and comfortable; it's charm and hominess is to be enjoyed by couples, partners, friends, honeymooners, or folks looking to get away. The bedroom is comfy and outfitted in soft, high-end bed linens. The king size bed is a Saatva, and completely luxurious. After a day spent hiking or shopping, you will look forward to snuggling up in your nest. The living room has games and cards, but also has Roku TV and wireless internet for times when you want to 'plug back in'. You will love staying here; it's like your home away from home. There are streams and trails on the property, as well as our hens in the chicken coop. The property will delight you and renew your spirit. Breathe in the fresh mountain air and feel yourself relax.
