About this property

Enchanting Tuscany Vacation Rental in Medieval Fortress Town Panoramic Views

Our well appointed two bedroom/two bath apartment sits within the walls of an ancient fortress town midway between Florence and Siena. We, the owners (an American and Italian), are proud to say we strived to keep the apartment's old world charm during the restoration process. It paid off, as our home was ultimately featured Italian architectural magazine.. (Case di Campagna).

The fortress town dates back to 1198. Our second floor apartment (2 flights up to our front door) is part of the ancient walls of the medieval fortress. Remodeled some years back, the interior reflects the hamlet's old world charm while still offering 21st century comforts. The master bedroom (up a short flight of stone steps off the main room), offers an ensuite bathroom with shower. The intimate rooftop terrace and the room's bifora window truly grace our guests with a 360° view of Tuscany. The second bedroom, on the main level, offers the same enchanting view of Tuscany’s silvery olive groves and patchwork vineyards. This bedroom has been set up as a second master with a queen size bed. The bathroom, with its walk-in shower) is adjacent to the bedroom.

The main room is an open space, comprising a well-equipped kitchen alcove and a dining table that comfortably seats six (even twelve if opened). This dining/living area has two comfortable sofas and an armchair that makes into a single bed (if needed).

The owner, a Tuscan cookbook author, ensures guests will find everything they need to prepare a savory Tuscan meal in the apartment's fingertip kitchen. There is a traditional oven, microwave, four burner gas stove top and dishwasher. There is a washing machine in the apartment, a drying rack, iron and ironing board.

There is wifi throughout the apartment with 24 hour free access. There is also a television in the living area for those who want to brush up on their Italian by watching Italian news, flicks and variety t.v.!

The hamlet, a typical medieval cobblestone fortress town, boasts of two archways (one to enter the hamlet and one to exit). Built around the year 1198, the hamlet still boasts an enchanting medieval aire. Our property is located on the main cobblestone street midway between the two archways. Within the walls one will find three excellent restaurants, two wine bars, and a handful of shops. Outside the walls of the fortress (a two minute stroll), there are two banks with ATM machines, two coffee bars, two grocery stores (one with freshly baked goods daily), a pharmacy, a post office and more. There are buses running to and from Florence and Siena (55 minutes in either direction) from 6 a.m. until 7 p.m. weekdays and also a few on the weekends. Tickets must be purchased on-line or at the tabacchi in the nearby village of Tavarnelle Val di Pesa (2 km away).

The neighboring medieval towns of Certaldo Alto (quaint hilltop fortress) and San Gimignano (The Manhattan of Tuscany) are within a 20 minute drive of the property. There are numerous other quaint hilltop towns scattered around this enchanting region, known as Chiantishire to the English. We highly recommend renting a car to explore the area's many hidden treasures.

The nearest town to the hamlet is Tavarnelle Val Di Pesa. There is a lovely footpath connecting this modern village to Barberino Val D'Elsa. The path (lined with olive trees) is approximately 2 kms long. Point of interest: Tavarnelle has a lovely outdoor market on Thursday mornings from 8a.m. to 1 p.m. Great place to mingle with the locals and pick up organic veggies, shoes, trendy clothes and more.

So, if mingling with the locals in a sleepy fortress town in Tuscany while sipping wine in an enchanting little square is on your wish list, then Barberino and our flat is the perfect place to do just that.

We are always happy to supply additional information about the area to traveling guests (i.e. festivals, fairs, wineries to visit, art shows etc). Culinary workshops in the property or in Florence for those ‘foodies’ can also be arranged with advance notice. Ask about private dining with English speaking hosts in Florentine homes as well.

For those who wish to swim or sunbath during the summer, we are happy to direct you to two lovely outdoor pools with garden settings nearby. For a nominal entrance fee, one can spend a relaxing afternoon swimming or sunbathing while mingling with the locals.

Beautiful!

Barberino Val D’Elsa is a charming town, perfect for a slow paced vacation. The rental apartment had everything we needed, including laundry facilities. The views from the bedroom were amazing. Cindy’s directions to the apartment and to check in were detailed so we had no problem. Parking was a 3 minute walk away and free. This rental was a hidden Tuscan gem, definitely recommend.

The apartment was perfect for the two couples to use as a based to explore Tuscony during our 2-week stay. The apartment was small but very comfortable and clean, with common areas to be together as well as separate spaces to have time apart. It had everything we required while we were there including a small but well outfitted kitchen, a washing machine to do laundry, comfortable beds, etc. Dinners were prepared several times in th kitchen and we had all the utensils, pots & pans, and great tools for making fine Italian meals. The surrounding area had many wineries ranging from "industrial scale" to small farms that grew other fruits and vegetables besides grapes and olives. We enjoyed the farm experiences that paired great food with their fine olive oils and wines. Our favorites were La Spinosa and Casa Emma. The location also allow us to easily visit Florence, Sienna, Greve, and even San Vincenzo for a day.Our host, Cindy, was a delight to work with on the reeervation. She was very responsive to our questions from the time of our booking to during the stay. A highlight of the trip was taking one of the cooking classes Cindy offers. We opted to travel to Florence for the class, which gave us an opportunity to join Cindy on the shopping trip to the local open-air marker for produce and shops for meats and wine. Cindy worked along side the 4 of us to craft a great Tuscon meal that we shared with Cindy and her husband, which was an exceptional treat.

Fantastic Spot in Tuscany

Wonderful place in a historic village in the Tuscan countryside. Easy to get to Florence, and other charming villages across Tuscany. There were 3 or 4 nice places to eat in the village; Pico, for pizza, was a favourite. All in all, an excellent place to stay.

Great getaway

We enjoyed our time in Barberino Tavarnelle. The apartment is located within a quaint little town. We enjoyed eating at the local restaurants (we would recommend making reservations as there are only a few). It was a great home based while we explored several wineries in the area. The apartment is just as described and is comfortable and well stocked.

Excellent accommodations in a lovely town!

We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Barberino Val d’Else! First, our accommodations were just as described and our host was helpful and accommodating to our needs and interests. Second, the quaint village appears just as one might imagine an 800 year old stone village would, with narrow streets and walkways. Barberino was a great choice for home base to explore Tuscany. Third, the restaurants all were wonderful — we sampled them all, including some in the countryside and we enjoyed each one. To top it off, there are local wines available for tasting and purchase. If/when we return to Tuscany, we know where we will stay.

Perfect location, wonderful apartment

The stairs are a bit much but the view is worth every step. The town is in a perfect location to tour the Chianti region, has several good restaurants and the views from the little patio are breathtaking. Loved our pizza lesson at Pico right in town. Very quiet and relaxing after a day of touring. Go there!

This was a wonderful hamlet with beautiful buildings, views, and quiet. The host, Cindy, was super helpful and very quick to respond to emails. She gave very good directions to the home and how to check in. The home was clean and comfortable for my husband and me. Highly recommend taking cooking class as well. Great location to visit many small towns and wineries.

If you've been thinking about visiting Tuscany and exploring local wineries and cities within a one- to two-hour drive, including Florence, Siena, and Bologna, this is the ideal central location for you. This home is situated in the heart of an ancient village, offering a unique opportunity to experience local culture and get to know the neighborhood residents. With five restaurants within walking distance, you'll have ample opportunities to dine on local cuisine. Parking is also readily available, just a short walk from the home. This is an ideal spot for those seeking a social atmosphere, where they can meet fellow travelers and locals from other countries. The rooftop terrace is perfect for sipping morning coffee or afternoon wine. Both bedrooms are beautifully decorated and air-conditioned, and the kitchen is fully equipped for preparing gourmet meals. Our landlord was outstanding, providing top-notch service and offering expert recommendations for exploring the local area. We often spent our days driving to nearby wineries for tours, returning home in the afternoon to rest before heading out for dinner at one of the many nearby family restaurants. There is no pool or hot tub. It’s an ancient village, but we drove 25 minutes away and they have public pools for seven euros per adult to hang out all day .This HOME truly exceeded our expectations. in addition, the landlord gives cooking classes that you can pre-arrange with her. you will definitely have fun.
Three restaurants within 25 feet of our front door and two restaurants 500 feet from our front door. A coffee shop at each end of the town that sells gelato drinks and coffee
The kitchen was large enough to cook for a family, even though we only use the kitchen for coffee tea because we would take a walk in the morning and in the evening to get either cappuccino or dessert
Restaurants lively with people
You can drive your rental car through the archway opening and go through the whole town you can unload your car, but you have to park outside of the main road through the Town a five minute walk no pay apart

Beautiful Tuscany

The property was tastefully furnished and the views took your breathe away. Cindy was very easy to communicate with and made sure everything was seamless. Perfect and charming

This was our second time at this amazing 15th century apartment in the quaint little hamlet of Barberino Val D'Elsa. We took our two teenage grandchildren who also loved the unique and lovely spot. The apartment is clean and comfortable and the village is situated for easy day trips all over Tuscany. Convenient grocery store nearby. What a great place to stay if you are looking for a laid back Tuscan experience. Thank you!

Great holiday destination in beautiful mediaeval town

This terrific accommodation in the Chiant area is well furnished and comfortable with beautiful views from the terrace and windows. The dishwasher and washing machine are a real bonus. Barbarino Val D'Elsa is well situated for day trips. Florence and Siena are both quite close by. Cindy's instructions are impeccable and she is very available to respond to any questions. The winetasting in the nearby square is excellent and the restaurant Il Campanellino, by the church, has excellent views and very good food. We would definitely recommend this accommodation.

Wow... do not hesitate to book this one.

First of all, Cindy was the best. An American now living in Tuscany. She was so personable and attentive to our questions. We always use VRBO so you can feel and smell the true country you are visiting. And when I say smell it was the bakery down stairs that every morning you will smell the wonderful baked breads and pastries being baked. Barberino Val D'elsa host two great restaurants that we visited a couple of nights at around 9 PM after a long day of touring the countryside. The property is in a great village close to every experience you can imagine in Tuscany. We drove all over, Florence a short drive away with easy parking outside the city. We drove to Pisa, Cinque Terre, San Gimignano, Siena and countless wineries. The apartment is fabulous with all the items needed to use a base camp for the week. A great stocked kitchen, great hot water and pressure. Did I mention the fabulous views every morning and the sunsets are fantastic. The fresh air will give the you energy to start your days early to enjoy what Italy has for you to fall in love with. Grazie Cindy. September 2017.

Medieval without the evil! 😁

Beautiful area and very cool location in a medieval village. Apartment has 2 suites with their own full bathrooms. Perfect for 2 couples or with older kids. Kitchen is small but well set up with full size fridge, small oven, microwave and gas burners. Location is amazing in the heart of Tuscany grape, wine and olive growing. Beautiful scenery and views. Several restaurants in the village and within walking distance plus small grocery store. Highlight was discovering the local soccer club’s fund raising restaurant - outstanding wood fired oven pizzas plus pasta and charcuterie amd €4.50 pitchers of white wine plus helping out the locals. Great fun! Cindy also arranged a cooking class in the apartment which was great fun. Be prepared though - volume is high - plan to eat leftovers for at least one more day - maybe 2! Be prepared - the stairs to the apartment are steep and high. Anyone with mobility issues will have problems. Also in the hot summer the apartment is hard to keep cool. A/C units can just keep up in bedrooms but the living area is a challenge. We had 2 fans going blowing from the 2 bedrooms to cool the main living area. It was 35 to 40 C outside so understandable but need to be prepared. If you are driving the roads are hilly, curved and narrow. We found the drivers pretty good in the rural area compared to the cities in Italy. All in all a beautiful and restful area to stay in

We had a wonderful stay in this little castle hideaway. We had 3 glorious weeks in Italy, and this was our favorite spot of the trip. Cindy was a wonderful host, giving us great tips and very useful connections. The food in the town was also excellent, just steps away from your door. We are only telling our closest friends about this place however, as we want to be able to go back. May we suggest that others that stay here follow the same policy..

Charming but with issues

The village is delightful, with a couple of very good dining options. The views from the bedroom are gorgeous, and the little terrace outside it is lovely for an evening aperitif, but the property has some drawbacks. The stairs are tricky - getting luggage up there is not easy. While accepting that it is very old and charming, there were some things that didn’t function so well for us. We barely used the downstairs bathroom because of the smell. The bedroom got very stuffy at night - the AC was inadequate, and leaving windows open was not an option because of mosquitoes. An insect screen or two would solve that. The dining area is very pleasant but the adjoining kitchen is in need of some attention, with a cupboard door falling off. We were not able to work the dishwasher. It was good to have a well-functioning washing machine and clothes drying was easy on the little terrace. Overall we have to say the stay was a bit disappointing considering the price.

Born and raised in California, I relocated to Tuscany in 1979 after meeting my Florentine husband on a vacation the year before.

I fell in love with Tuscany and especially Barberino Val D’Elsa. For an American, the village was a fairytale spot. I was bound and determined to own something in that fortress town. It took 10 years, but finally in 1989 a small tower property came up for sale. We bought it within 10 minutes of seeing it. It took nearly two years of restoration (binding laws, thick walls and slow workers) to finish our home. Initially it was to be our vacation spot. But, after the renovation I insisted we move in and live the authentic life of Tuscan villagers. And that we did for 4 years. Once our boys became of school age we moved to Florence where sports and school trumped the serene village life I preferred; keeping our small tower apartment in the Chianti wine region for our weekend retreat.

Although we live in Florence, the first sixteen years of my Italian life were spent in this region. The first twelve years in a two hundred year old farmhouse near the hamlet, then in the hamlet. Thanks to the women in this area (moms and grandmothers) who took me under their wings, I soon became a Tuscan mother myself. Knowing my passion for food and cooking, they shared their culinary secrets with me, shared their kitchens, and shared their stories. Once I relocated to the city, I decided to share my Tuscan life by writing a food memoire/recipe book in honor of what these ‘fine’ chefs taught me: Zucchini Blossoms -A Culinary Memoir & Recipes From Tuscany.

Why they chose this property

Set in a unique spot, the fortress town is surrounded by Tuscany’s patchwork vineyards and silvery olive groves. As a writer and lover of nature and history, I was swept away by the area and the hamlet's authenticity. So, in 1989 when this property came up for sale, I knew I had to have it. It took over two years to complete the restoration of the apartment. We were careful in keeping the authenticity of its architectural makeup but at the same time wanted to give it a bit of modernity.

What makes this property unique

The views from our master bedroom are simply breathtaking. Every time I open the bifora window in our bedroom, or walk out onto the cozy rooftop terrace, a smile crosses my lips... 'this is Tuscany,' I think. I am truly blessed to have relocated to this enchanting corner of the globe some four decades ago.
