This is perhaps the best rental in downtown Belfast. We have over 15 years experience serving the short term rental market in Belfast. This one is our most luxurious rental to date. Luxury abounds in this modern, spacious apartment newly built 10 years ago inside one of the oldest surviving timber frame buildings in downtown Belfast. This fantastic apartment is perfect for a family or for 3 couples as each bedroom has its own living room and there are three bathrooms, each more distinctive and luxurious than the next. For ultimate privacy, no bedroom shares a wall with another bedroom. The two upstairs bedrooms have king beds and the first floor bedroom has a queen bed . There is also a Queen sleeper in the upstairs den. The apartment is on the top two floors of the Ocean House, a recently renovated 1865 building in the heart of downtown Belfast. One enters the apartment into a large foyer with plenty of closet space. There is an open living room / dining area downstairs with a large balcony with four chairs and a dining table overlooking downtown Belfast . This is the perfect place to have your coffee and watch our city wake up! A sleek, modern kitchen with a distinctive breakfast bar has all the amenities you will need for cooking or entertaining. We provide a cupboard full of complimentary single serving snacks, both healthy and decadent! There is also usually some pasta and sauce or soup if you arrive late and hungry and ground coffee and tea always always provided. The first floor bedroom faces the harbor and windows have lovely views of the inner harbor. There is a nice balcony off this bedroom for sitting and watching the sun come up or for watching the fireworks during the Celtic Festival. The first floor also has a large and unique slate tiled bathroom just off the hallway, next to the bedroom. This bathroom has copper fixtures and a beautifully tiled, glass door, shower. Upstairs is a large den with pull out Queen sofa bed, and a view to the inner harbor bridge that can't be beat! There is a small black and white tiled bathroom with glass door shower and views all the way to Castine, right off the den. The tower bedroom has views to the East, down Penobscot Bay to Islesboro and beyond. This is the best bedroom for watching the sun rise from your bed. The master suite is next. The most luxurious part of the Ocean House, the master suite has views of the inner harbor and the Armistice Bridge as well as a great view of Main Street and the setting sun to the west. The light-filled suite has King bed with 750 thread count cotton sheets (as do all the beds) and a sitting area with down couch and lounge chairs. Two large lighted closets complete the room. There is a washer /dryer on the second floor and 3 TVs, 3 with 175 channels of DirectTV, and one Smart TV in the master. The apartment has 18 windows and two full light doors out to decks facing East and West for the best in Sunrise and Sunset viewing. The entire apartment is air conditioned and has heat through several heat pump units. Each bedroom controls its own climate. The apartment is decorated in a comfortable, modern, decor peppered with a smattering of antiques. Seth has collected furniture and antiques throughout his career as a museum curator and private art dealer. The loft is full of pieces from this art collection. The apartment is right in downtown Belfast and dining choices abound. Within just several blocks of the apartment are at least 13 restaurants, Shopping is just steps away and one of the best cottage / garden retail store is located in the building, on the floor below the apartment. We are also a block from the" Hills to Sea" trail system, a 47 mile long stretch of trails that run from Belfast to Unity Maine for biking, hiking, walking or running. There is ample parking in our own lot for the loft, with one reserved space in the lot for guests. There is also a growing garden landscape on the property. This is a work in progress and will take me a few more years to complete, but beauty abounds from the roses and climbing hydrangea along the fenceline..to the over 100 Dahlia plants blooming in September and October.

Wonderful, comfortable, thoughtfully well-appointed. Terrific walkable location. Lovely garden attracts a host of beautiful pollinators. Ideal for family togetherness with cooking. Highly recommend.
The accommodations were top notch, everything was as described online if not better. Seth had great communication with us and was always available to be helpful to make our visit to Belfast perfect. The location is great, so close to everything in Belfast. I highly recommend booking this property as you will not be disappointed.

I highly recommend this place if you find you're looking somewhere in the mid coast of Maine! Startlng with great communication, to all the beautiful touches, you can't go wrong. You can tell the owners care. Belfast is a fun community and walkable and if you need other suggestions, Seth can point you in the right direction! We loved our stay!

Thanks so much for staying with us at the Ocean House. Come back and see us again soon!
Beautifully maintained and exceptionally well appointed home away from home. Arrive, unpack and relax - your vacation begins - no beds to make, supplies to purchase or worries about late night noises. Ideal location for exploring all that Belfast has to offer, and within easy driving distance of Acadia, Camden and Rockland.
We had a great time staying in Belfast. So much to do and see in this small town. The location was perfect to visit Bar Harbor, Acadia National Forest, and Camden. We loved that it had an authentic feel and was not as "touristy" as some of the other places we visited. The accomodations were wonderful. The place had everything you would need and the location right in the middle of town was perfect. I highly recommend!
Excellent all around. Attentive hosts. Best place we have ever stayed by far. Beautiful location. Close to so much on the seacoast. Can’t say enough. Our family had a fantastic time.

Thanks for the wonderful comments. Great guests, left the space in perfect shape. Please come and stay with us anytime!
This was our second time to Belfast and the Ocean House. We stayed a few years ago on a couples trip and returned in 2023, this time with our kids (18yrs and 14yrs). Both trips were amazing! The Ocean House is a beautiful property with great gathering spaces and room for everyone to spread out. Seth & Greg are fantastic hosts. We can’t wait to return!
We come to Belfast often to see family and we have stayed at this property before. It is wonderful to be able to walk to shops, the water and the great walking trails. Seth has made sure that the apartment has everything you need to be comfortable and we could cook real meals with the equipment provided. Although this was a winter trip, we have stayed in the summer, too and the balcony overlooking Main Street is really great as is proximity to the ice cream parlour.
This home had everything we needed and more! Beds were very comfortable. Restaurants and quaint shops we’re right outside our door. Seth, the owner, was wonderful to work with and answered any questions in a very timely manner. The kitchen was well equipped and allowed us to prepare a special lobster and crab dinner with our family.
The bar has now been set very high for all other VRBOs.

Thanks so much for coming and seeing us in Maine we'd love to have you back sometime for a longer visit!!
Seth and Greg's two-story apartment was in an ideal location. We did day trips north and south most days. Lots to choose from in the way of restaurants, all within walking distance of the rental. The place itself was so comfortable and roomy. We told ourselves we could live in the apartment. One of the best places we've stayed, and we've rented a lot of VRBO's. Kudos to Seth and Greg.

Wonderful guests! The apartment was spotless! Thank you so much. It was lovely meeting you and I am so glad you have a great first trip to Maine. Come again and bring the kids!
I don't do reviews but this place is just exceptional. Perfect location in the heart of town with views of the bay and main street. Windows everywhere. Half a block from the Belfast co-op where you can get the NY Times and 20 different kinds of jerky. And even though there are like four tv's, there are none in the main living room so people actually end up talking to each other. It's just great.

Perfect Coastal Maine Escape
WOW, The Ocean House is nothing short of amazing. It is quite possibly the best and most thoughtfully stocked rental I've ever I've ever stayed in. Add in Seth as a terrific host and you know everything is going to be fabulous.
The bedrooms and bathrooms are very well appointed, as are the common areas. It was a perfect space for our family.
The location is superb. It was a great jumping off spot for exploring Belfast and all the other coastal towns we hit on our trip. The location was also great for me as a runner, as it was close to the local rail to trail path.
I'd highly recommend a stay with Seth at The Ocean House!

Ann Marie, It was so nice to meet you and your family! I hope you had a great stay in Maine and thank you very much for staying with us at the Ocean House. We hope you come back again soon!
Cheers, Seth
From the moment we booked to the moment we checked out, Seth and Sarah were enormously helpful. They immediately responded to any questions, had a welcome binder full of information about Belfast and the surrounding area, as well as Fodors and Moon guide books on Maine and Acadia. The VRBO property itself is absolutely stunning. With two floors, three beautifully appointed bedrooms and three fully stocked bathrooms, a gorgeously renovated cooks kitchen, two balconies, we couldn’t have asked for more and definitely wished we had stayed longer. Our experience was so relaxing and right in the center of all the best that Belfast has to offer. The space was remarkably quiet and the split AC system kept everything a perfect temperature.
We are already looking forward to our next stay!
Thank you, Seth and Sarah

Thanks so much for staying with us. We hope to see you again soon! Best, Seth
We were coming back from Canada on a winter trip and wanted to see the area (Maine and Belfast) during the winter versus all of the summer and fall trips that we have taken to the area. We ended up being here during a severe cold snap (minus 18 degrees), so we mostly stayed inside to say the least. The property owner was in touch and brought over a couple of space heaters (just in case). The home is very well built and the space heaters were not needed.
The property itself is very well furnished (and done very tastefully), and you will lack for nothing during your stay. The owners were also very responsive and great to communicate with ahead of our arrival and during our stay.
We would definitely love to stay again.

Perfect Long Weekend
There were only four of us on our little get away. The apartment has tons of room. We could have easily had another couple join us. I had never been to Belfast before. It is a great town and a very centralized location. It is an easy drive up to Acadia for a day trip as well as being close to Mt Battie. Of course, it is Maine so there are lots of light houses to see no matter where you are staying. We were lucky enough to be there for the Celtic Festival. The apartment gave us the best seats in town for the fireworks show. There were several good restaurants within a block or so of the apartment. The owners did a fantastic job restoring this old hotel. They also do a great job of providing lots of little things that are very handy for vacation travelers. We hope to be back for another visit when we can stay longer.

About the host
Hosted by Seth Thayer
We have been renovating and renting out properties since 2007 with Homeaway. This is our third and finest short-term rental property. We obsessed about the Ocean House for years before purchasing her and doing the redesign. We designed the changes ourselves and did a lot of the grunt work in renovating the building. It took us six months to build out this apartment, which we also designed, build and furnished ourselves. Greg is an architectural designer and Seth is a private curator, specializing in American art of the 18th and 19th centuries. Some of their art collection fills the wall of the Ocean House. We love the Ocean House and hope you do too!
Why they chose this property
The Ocean House is something special in the heart of downtown Belfast Maine. Prominently situated at the intersection of Main, Cross, and Federal Streets, The Ocean House was built as a hotel in 1865 and survived at least one of the fires that destroyed most of the downtown. We gutted her down to the studs and rebuilt. We carved out this wonderful, HUGE apartment in the upper two floors and took advantage of our sight lines so that there is something interesting to look at out of each of the 18 windows. 360 degree views of downtown Belfast and the harbor Come stay in our beautiful building with views to Castine and beyond! And also with views of Belfast's industrial past!
What makes this property unique
You can either walk out the door and eat or shop to your heart's content, or we can get you almost everything you want in town. We can stock your apartment, we can arrange for a private chef, spa treatments, massage sessions, yoga classes, meditation groups,. We can help you with whale watching in Bar Harbor, private museum tours, even a sunset cruise on Penobscot Bay with champagne and salmon. This is a must stay location. We have an exciting new restaurant two stories below the apartment where you can sit, have a drink, and enjoy wood fired pizza and Italian specialities. Does it get any better??
