About this property
Spacious, artist-designed apartment in 1890s chocolate factory. DOG FRIENDLY!
(Newish to VRBO, but I’ve been hosting for three years. Many reviews available online.) Private entrance through garden leads to peaceful patio and 1300-square-foot apartment. Enter through sun-filled study. Tall, glass-paned double doors open to huge living and dining room. From living room, two more sets of French doors lead to a bedroom at one corner and kitchen/laundry room at another. Full bathroom with tub/shower. Furnished entirely in genuine mid-century modern, craftsman, art deco, and art nouveau pieces. No particle board. The furniture is real. The art is real. The host is real, living on the premises and providing any help you need.
The building is a local landmark known as the Chocolate Factory. Built in the 1890s it housed chocolatier Hopewell Dainties in the 1920s. During the Great Depression the WPA repurposed it to make shirts and employ Hopewell’s women. Later the factory made what were delicately termed “personal massage devices”. Hmmm. In the 1980s Seward Johnson, founder of Grounds for Sculpture, used the building for his international school of sculpture. Artists-in-residence beautifully redesigned it as live-work space. Your apartment has aesthetic interest throughout: high ceilings, exposed brick walls, and tall original windows, all refurbished to open easily. Warm in winter. Cool in summer. You will be comfortable.
Excellent WiFi service throughout the apartment. Kitchen has refrigerator, stove, sink, microwave, toaster oven, Nespresso machine, and electric kettle. Also included are copper-clad stainless pans, cooking utensils, antique crystal, linen napkins, vintage silverware, and dishes by Poole Pottery and Seagrove potters. Host provides avocado oil, salt, pepper, coffee, teas, sweeteners, half & half, spring water, and, of course, chocolate. (Please note there is no full-size oven.) Family-size clothes washer, dryer, detergent, and bleach are all within the apartment. Bedroom has top-quality queen-size bed. (Guests often comment on how comfortable it is.) All linens are white and 100% cotton.
Location is near the center of famously friendly Hopewell Borough. The New York Times dubbed Hopewell “Vermont in New Jersey”. The town is ringed by preserved fields, forest, and wetlands, including the Watershed Institute, Sourland Preserve, Sourland Reserve, Lawrence-Hopewell Trail, and the Quarry swimming hole. Walk to restaurants, galleries, boutiques, antique stores, and multiple parks and hiking trails. Princeton, its university, and trains to New York City and Philadelphia are just seven miles away. Lambertville and New Hope are just a ten-mile drive. TCNJ is also ten miles away. Guests enjoy on-site parking for one large vehicle or two small. Street parking directly in front of the building is unlimited except during heavy snowfall. On-site Tesla charging available.

This was a welcome retreat from the craziness of Princeton reunions and only 20 minutes away. The apartment is spacious, clean, and well-appointed. The bed was especially comfy and the gardens were lovely.
This property was a perfect stop along my summer journey! Susan makes sure all the small touches are taken care of to provide a fun and easy stay. The neighborhood is quiet and walkable.
Responsive gracious host. Amenities were excellent, every need anticipated. Interesting art, decor, unique building, comfortable bed, excellent shower (great water pressure!), warm, inviting and spacious home. First class all the way.
We have a large dog so truly appreciate how dog friendly this apartment and the surrounding neighborhood are. Loved being able to walk to antique stores, restaurants, and shops. Very friendly and communicative host, and very friendly neighborhood. I have already recommended this place to numerous friends! Hopewell is beautiful and this apartment is incredibly appointed and spacious!
We enjoyed our one-night stay with our dog for the July 4th holiday. The 1-bedroom apartment had a large open living room for relaxing. There are lots of books to read, but no TV. It is an easy walk to downtown restaurants, shops and several parks.
We had a one night stay on our way north with 2 labs. The historic venue was interesting and easy to navigate, a fenced garden was a real bonus. Highly recommend. Good restaurants and quaint town in walking distance.
Everything we needed to make us comfortable after a long drive with our pets in tow. Susan has a real artistic flare with interesting touches everywhere you turn. We are return visitors for the second time and plan another trip in the spring.
This was just the casual and easy living space we were looking for with a little garden for a small dog's needs. It is in walking distance of a fabulous breakfast/lunch place and antique stores! What could be better?
The only surprise was the kitchenette did not have a sink.
The Chocolate Factory is a beautiful building with an interesting history. The listed apartment is large and wonderfully furnished. A slightly larger kitchenette would be nice, but everything worked out. The town is pretty and friendly, with many destinations within walking distance, though sidewalks left something to be desired on some streets. Our stay was cut short by a double booking, but our host was apologetic and very helpful. We hope to be able to stay again in the future.
I grew up in Hopewell and Princeton. I moved away, to Boston and then San Francisco, for 26 years. In the end, the woods of Hopewell called me back home.
Why they chose this property
With a population of just 1,900 Hopewell Borough is super-friendly, crime-free, small-town America. All of the businesses are individually owned; we have no chain stores or fast food here. Locals had the foresight to work with non-profits and government programs to preserve our open spaces. The Borough is ringed by preserved wild land and protected acreage continues to expand.
What makes this property unique
Property has ten-foot ceilings, exposed brick, and a native plant garden. It’s furnished entirely in genuine mid-century modern, craftsman, art deco, and art nouveau pieces. All the art is real, too.
