About the host
Hosted by Laura K. Benton
Mountain Adventure Retreats was founded on a deep-rooted passion for the San Juan Mountains and a shared commitment to excellence in hospitality and property care. The venture began in 2013, sparked by Laura’s long-standing love for Ouray County. A lifelong Coloradan who first discovered the Ridgway and Ouray area in 2001, Laura brought with her an extensive background in business, marketing, and travel management. Her years of experience in the ski and property management industries across North America’s premier destinations provided the foundation for a company built on community and exceptional service.
In 2020, the team expanded when Steve moved from Dallas to join Laura in Ouray County. Steve’s arrival marked the beginning of a new chapter for the company, bringing forty-three years of high-level construction management experience to the team. Having served as Vice President for some of the nation’s top General Contractors, he integrated professional expertise in budgeting, procurement, and project oversight into the company’s property maintenance and caretaking operations. His own connection to the state dates back to 1993, when participating in Ride the Rockies ignited a lifelong passion for Colorado’s dramatic landscapes.
Today, Laura and Steve work side-by-side to lead a dedicated team of professionals focused on delivering top-tier property care. When they aren't overseeing the finer details of a guest's stay or maintaining local residences, they are often found embracing the outdoors together. Whether they are cycling, skiing, hiking, or fishing, they remain inspired by the ever-changing seasons and the rugged beauty of the San Juan Mountains.

Why they chose this property
The property is situated in the historic heart of Ouray, a town affectionately known as the "Switzerland of America" for its dramatic location within a high-alpine box canyon. This neighborhood is characterized by its exceptionally well-preserved Victorian-era architecture, where late 19th-century brick storefronts and colorful frame houses line the streets under the towering peaks of the San Juan Mountains. Living in this central district means being part of a vibrant, walkable community where independent boutiques, artisanal galleries, and locally owned restaurants are just steps away. The atmosphere is a unique blend of Old West heritage and a modern, athletic spirit, reflecting the town's status as a premier destination for outdoor recreation.
Adventure is built into the geography of the neighborhood, with a famous six-mile loop trail circumnavigating the town and accessible from multiple points right downtown. Just a short stroll away, the local hot springs offer a massive, sulfur-free soaking experience with panoramic views of the surrounding rock formations. Whether you are exploring thundering waterfalls, visiting local museums, or simply enjoying the sunset alpenglow from a park bench, the neighborhood provides a peaceful yet exhilarating backdrop. It is a place where a rich mining history meets a tranquil sanctuary, offering every convenience of town life while remaining deeply connected to the rugged wilderness.

What makes this property unique
What truly sets the Perimeter Suite apart is its rare combination of historic soul and high-end, contemporary luxury. Unlike many standard mountain rentals, this studio has been meticulously designed with custom finishes that serve as a tribute to the 19th-century heritage of the area. Guests frequently note the unique character found in the artisanal bathroom and the thoughtfully curated decor, which manages to feel both timeless and incredibly fresh. The suite is part of an exclusive complex that offers the intimacy of a private sanctuary while remaining just a half-block from the heart of the town’s vibrant activity.
Beyond the aesthetics, the property offers a level of convenience that is hard to match in a historic mountain town. It is one of the few boutique spaces in the area to provide the comfort of air conditioning alongside a fully equipped, modern kitchenette. Location-wise, it serves as a literal gateway to adventure; you are positioned within a short walk of both the thundering waterfalls of the local canyon and the world-famous hot springs. This unique positioning allows you to transition from a rugged day of hiking to a sophisticated evening in the city center in a matter of minutes, all while returning to a home that offers total privacy and no shared common areas.
