Relax under the magnolia tree and watch the wildflowers grow from the shared backyard (the cottage behind the garage is rented separately). The central location of this 3-bedroom, 2-bath home allows easy access to all the splendors of Carmel—from downtown shops, galleries, and restaurants to hiking trails and beaches. It’s all on one level except for a step-down den with a large TV, fireplace, two swivel chairs and a leather loveseat. The main living room features a second fireplace and a piano, the dining area seats six, and the kitchen has quartz countertops, a 5-burner gas cooktop and stainless appliances. French doors in the breakfast nook open to a deck facing the backyard. The master suite (King bed) has a private bath with a shower and a jacuzzi tub; the second guestroom has a Queen, and the third has two Twins. Both bedrooms share a hall bath with a stall shower. Driveway and street parking. Note: The back cottage has a long term tenant and is not part of the rental. Carmel TOT certificate: 002279

A Comfortable Home
Magnolia was a comfortable, clean and well stocked home for a getaway for 3 of us. It was handy to have a driveway for off street parking, and it was a quick drive to Ocean Ave. Because parking is difficult in downtown Carmel, it was very reasonable to Uber from the house.
We had a wonderful time!Magnolia House was truly a great place to celebrate a special Birthday:)The deck was our favorite place to hang out… and the weather was perfect - sunny and welcoming :)
The good: The location was great. Nice neighborhood near enough to Carmel but quiet and easy to access. The property was nicely landscaped. The house is roomy and was very clean. The linens were fresh. The TV worked well. The not so good: The pictures are not accurate. The house is dark and poorly lit. It is old and smelled a bit musty. The kitchen was poorly stocked. (No salad bowl, mismatched silverware, dripping faucet, old pots and pans that appeared to be from garage sales.) Old coffee maker. The master bed mattress sagged on both sides. It should be replaced. Shower doors did not close properly. There were ants in the kitchen and bathrooms. The WiFi was sketchy in some rooms. Old furniture.Overall: A good base of operation but not a place you would actually want to spend time in.

Liked: Cleanliness, communication, location
president's weekend in Carmel
Comfy home. Large kitchen, two tables on which to enjoy one's meals. Location was great, close enough to town but far enough away from the weekend hustle and bustle.
All of our basic needs were met, so it was not a bad stay. We wanted a large space for a family, kitchen to cook in, and good location to walk into town, which we got. However this pricing was a bit of a splurge for us which based on the pictures we thought would make it worth it, however the pictures are far more luxurious than the house IRL. All the furniture felt random and like it was just picked up from a garage sale, the kitchen was not well stocked, and everything just felt very old. The biggest hindrance was only having service and wifi in one part of the house which was the part of the house we hung out in the least. Like I said, had everything we needed at the minimum, but do not think it was worth the price we paid. Especially since this was an expensive treat that we allowed ourselves.
This was our first time using VBRO. Their current slogan is “The entire place to yourself”. With the preferences being selected as entire place, under the assumption that meant the filter would only list entire homes available for rent. When we arrived and realized the garage-turned-cottage behind the house in the backyard, was occupied, we were very disappointed. We would have never booked this property had we realized this was a shared property. After immediately looking up the listing to see if we missed something on our part, it turns out, buried on the last line of the very long property description is a foot “note” about the tenant cottage. This should be in the first line or stated more clearly. To add to our dismay, the french doors in the main dining room don’t have blinds so the back tenants can see right into the dining room and vice versa as we were able to see them clearly. Borderline false advertising considering VBRO’s slogan. Everything else was decent, besides the regular quirky rental stuff (wobbly toilet, some outlets not working, missing door stops, older furniture, dining room chairs with broken spindles) We were mainly just bothered by the lack of privacy. Hopefully the property manager can be more up front about the listing or at least put some window coverings on the french doors so the next occupants don’t feel like their privacy is being violated.

We understand how important privacy and transparency are when selecting a vacation rental, and we regret that the presence of the tenant-occupied cottage in the back of the property was not made clearer. We've updated the listing and moved that information from the end of the paragraph to the beginning to avoid any confusion for future guests.
Additionally, we appreciate your comments about the lack of window coverings on the French doors and the minor maintenance issues you noted. We are addressing these concerns with our team and will be taking steps to improve both privacy and the overall condition of the home. Your experience matters, and we're committed to making the necessary changes to ensure future guests have a more comfortable stay.
