A two-bedroom retreat sitting in the trees in Sudden Valley, about 15 minutes from downtown Bellingham. Large private deck with a dining table and lounge chairs looking out at the forest. Two king bedrooms, open-concept living with vaulted wood ceilings, fully equipped kitchen, and a sectional that converts to sleep two more. Whatcom Lake, hiking trails, a public golf course, and a private disc golf course are all minutes away. Pet friendly.
The unit sits on the upper level of a home built into a forested hillside. The trees are not a backdrop here, they are right there, surrounding the deck, filtering the light, keeping the place cool in summer. It is genuinely quiet in a way that takes a few hours to get used to if you have been in a city.
Inside, the main living space has vaulted wood ceilings that give it a proper cabin feel without being remote or rustic. The kitchen is fully equipped with a Keurig. Large sectional in the living room converts to a king-size bed by pushing the two ottomans together, bedding stored inside, good for two children or one adult. Two bedrooms, each with a king bed. Each room has its own thermostat.
The deck is the main draw. Large, private, with a dining table and lounge chairs. Forest on all sides. The kind of place you sit down for morning coffee and look up two hours later.
In-unit washer and dryer. Free parking in the driveway. Pets welcome.
DISC GOLF
Guests have access to Mossy Roc Disc Golf Course, a private advanced 18-hole course. Four discs are provided in the TV console in the living room. Lost discs are a $20 replacement charge per disc.
MOUNTAIN BIKING
Galbraith Mountain is a short drive and one of the most developed trail networks in the Pacific Northwest, with options from beginner flow trails to technical enduro and downhill. I co-host a guided riding experience with a professional UCI Downhill World Circuit racer, tailored to your ability level. Guests get 20% off. Message me before or after booking if you want details.
THE AREA
Sudden Valley is a wooded residential neighborhood about 15 minutes from downtown Bellingham. Quiet, forested, and far enough from the city to feel like you got away, close enough that a dinner reservation in town is easy.
Whatcom Lake is a few minutes away and open to the public: swimming, kayaking, fishing. The Sudden Valley Golf Course is close and open to the public. The Interurban Trail and Chuckanut Mountain are nearby for hiking, with routes from easy waterfront walks to ridgeline trails with views over Puget Sound.
Downtown Bellingham has a serious food and brewery scene for a city its size. Gruff Brewing and Kulshan at Trackside are both worth an evening. Trackside is an outdoor beer garden, wine bar, and food hub next to a large bike park where kids can ride while adults eat and drink in the sun. Otherside Bagels for the morning, L&L for lunch, the Community Food Co-op for groceries and one of the better breakfast burritos in the area. The Saturday Farmers Market at Depot Market Square runs Saturdays April through December.
In winter, Mount Baker Ski Area is about an hour's drive and one of the snowiest resorts in North America. Bellingham is the closest real city to it.
GOOD TO KNOW
The home is built into a hillside: one flight of stairs to the first level, then a short second flight up to this unit. Worth knowing if traveling with young children, elderly guests, or a lot of gear.
Sudden Valley gets very dark after sunset. If arriving at night, bring a flashlight or use your phone's light.
One dedicated parking space in the driveway. A second space is available and shared. Street parking also available.
The entire unit is yours: both bedrooms, kitchen, living area, bathroom, and deck. Private entrance, one level, self-contained. Exterior security cameras are on the property at entrances and exterior areas only.

About the host
Hosted by Torrey van Benten Belzberg
I grew up in the Pacific Northwest and have been hosting in the Bellingham area for several years. When I'm not managing properties I'm usually on a mountain bike at Galbraith, surfing, or grilling with friends. I co-host a guided mountain bike experience with a rider who competes on the UCI Downhill World Circuit, so if you're coming to ride, message me before you arrive and I can point you in the right direction or get you set up with a guide.
I take hosting seriously. The unit is clean, the instructions are clear, and if something is wrong during your stay I want to know about it so I can fix it. I'm not on-site but I'm never far.
Why they chose this property
Sudden Valley sits in a pocket of Douglas fir about 15 minutes from downtown Bellingham. It is a real residential neighborhood, not a resort, which means it is quiet, uncrowded, and priced like it has not figured out that it is beautiful yet. Whatcom Lake is a few minutes down the road. The Interurban Trail is close. The city is an easy drive when you want it.
I chose it because it offers something the downtown listings can't: actual forest. The deck here looks into the trees. There is no street noise. The nights are genuinely dark and the mornings are genuinely quiet.
What makes this property unique
Most retreats in this price range either put you in the woods without any amenities or give you amenities in a neighborhood that doesn't feel like the woods. This one does both. Vaulted wood ceilings, two king beds, a full kitchen, a large deck in the trees, and access to a private disc golf course that most guests don't know exists until they arrive.
It is a 15-minute drive to downtown Bellingham's breweries and restaurants, and a short drive to Galbraith Mountain's trail network. For a group or family that wants to actually be outside during the day and comfortable at night, it tends to hit the right balance.
