About this property

Historical Stockdale Mill - Main buiding

You will be staying in the main Mill (Gristing mill) next to the Cider Mill. There are multiple buildings however you will only have exclusivity to one.

The Space

Take yourself back to 1867, the birth of Canada as a country. You're standing on a small bridge overlooking a powerful cascade of water over a dam. This cascade is generating power that drives the water wheel turbines in the grist mill to the right and the sawmill to the left. Behind is a large mill pond, where swimming, summer boating, waterside picnics, winter hockey, and skating take place. All these features form Stockdale Mill, the social hub of a small thriving community near Trenton in eastern Ontario. All in all, a unique countryside treasure filled with an historic past.

Today, standing on that same bridge, you admire the view of the waterfall and the rustic Stockdale Mill grist and cider mills. These structures have been inoperative only 40 years. However, situated on nearly two acres of alluring natural habitat, they are all still a scenic piece of history that artists have been recreating for decades.

Inside, the changes have been dramatic. The interior and exterior are an inviting four-level, open-concept heritage set of mills. The cozy ambiance features a mixture of new pine, old barn board and sturdy support beams. Antique fixtures, pictures and furniture abound. And pieces of the old mill, including the two original stone millstones, recall its past. Just as enticing is the breath-taking view of the surging waters outside from the windows on the first, second and third levels. A fourth level leads to a loft.

The Neighbourhood

Wineries, Orchards, farmers markets, beaches, fishing, swimming, antique shops, breweries, distilleries, Picton and the Drake Devonshire in Wellington.
There is a waterfall just behind the house. A beautiful view from the property.

As advertised

What a great property. It was lovely to sit on the deck or in the living room and hear the river running by the mill. The outdoor pizza oven was a surprise bonus.

Did not meet our expectations

A cool rustic place, but professional cleaning would have made a difference. There were cobwebs everywhere, dead bugs caught in webs, dust had settled un-wiped on surfaces. My daughter has asthma and the amount of dust affected her. On a hot summer’s day, another AC unit in the main living space would have made the place more comfortable to be in as the fans did not help. We decided to just stay one night instead of the three nights we booked. Deeply disappointed and turned off by the experience. The host seems nice and responded to texts promptly, but I am wondering if they paid attention to the review from a previous guest who stayed in May 2022 in which they recommended a professional cleaning. As I mentioned, a professional cleaning would have made a difference for us.

May 24th long weekend- be aware of black flies

We enjoyed our stay but suggest a professional cleaning between visits to improve the cleanliness. We loved the unique aspects of the mill and enjoyed the pizza oven too. Many interesting birds and fish to see and identify.
