About this property

Solar powered bohemian loft cottage with birds, lizards, and frogs

If you are on vacation and are looking for a simple place to shower and sleep while sightseeing, this cottage is a great option. It features 2 queen beds (one of them in a loft space), a full bathroom with propane heated water, and a kitchenette with a small propane cooking appliance. The solar power allows for lights and charging of personal electronic devices, but not much else (no irons or hair dryers or the power will shut off and not restart). Lights and power should be off when no one is in a room. The space works best for ecotourists who want a unique place to stay and plan on traveling the island during the day. The cottage has hand pieced artistic floors in granite, lava rock, and tile. The shower is lava rock with ceramic turtle and fish. There is a cooler available but no refrigerator, so if you are planning on storing food, please bring ice to keep it cold. There is also a picnic bench that can seat four for a meal. The cottage is located in the rain forest so there are at least four types of lizards and geckos that live in and on the cottage, which keeps the bugs in check. There are many types of wild and domesticated birds on the property, including finches, 'i'iwis, mynas, pheasants, chickens and peacocks. The cocqui frogs sing all night and can be loud, as many windows are only screen with no covers.

Wonderful retreat close to nature!

We fell in love with this artsy abode as soon as we stepped inside. Part of the building is a geodesic dome shape, with lots of screened windows (no glass) in a yard of dense jungle growth, but plenty of light. Fine workmanship throughout. We initially had some concern when just before arriving we read it has no refrigerator; we were lugging salad fixings and canned drinks from our last VRBO. Happy (the host) reassured us it does have a cooler, so we bought ice in nearby Keaau and it worked fine. There were three of us, so my son and his girlfriend had the loft bed and I had ground floor bed. Both comfortable and clean. The jungle setting sounds really remote, but it is mostly just an 8-10 min drive on paved roads through lightly populated neighborhoods until turning on a short dirt driveway. We loved the jungle sounds of parrots, chickens, coquis, at night! It got quite cool at night so I put on long pants and sweater in the morning before sunup. 10 mins in car to Food Mart in Keauu. 30 mins to the volcano, about 20-30 mins to Hilo, this was a great spot for a view days in this area. This cottage has a lived in and loved feel that worked perfectly for us. Nice contrast to the sterile perfection of "luxury resorts". Highly recommend for folks who can appreciate it like we did.

Prepare yourself accordingly - Honest Review

I'll list the pros and the cons of my stay:Pros: Rainforest location, cute cottage, lots of wildlife (Peacocks, Macaws, chickens, lizards) - The peacocks are super friendly and come to your door throughout the day. Good shower water pressure/heat.Cons: Dirty. I cleaned A LOT. The dish rack was atrocious, sponges were old/moldy. Dirt everywhere. The shower tub is clogged.Extremely old flat pillows and sheets that slip off the bed CONSTANTLY. I replaced: sponges, soap, trash bags, bought a pillow, and more.Absolutely no service in the cottage or around it. NO wi-fi either. The kicker was the electricity and getting scolded by the owner. The listing said the property can handle lights and phone chargers. Which is literally all we had. One Friday during our stay, it rained all day so we stayed at the cottage. All we used were the chargers and a ceiling fan. The power went out around midnight. I figured from lack of sun charging the solar system. I ended up having to charge my devices in my car that night and got us a hotel on the other side of the island. When we got back 2.5 days later, the owner came over and chewed us out accusing us of using hair dryers and coffee makers? Told us no more power and to use candles/would not restart the solar power. We had to get several other hotels. Out of 14 nights, we stayed 7 nights elsewhere. I do not recommend this place as anything other than a place to sleep.
