About this property

A Beech Mountain Retreat Upon The Watauga River

Vacation on the Watauga River, in the Pisgah National Forest of North Carolina! Secluded, fully furnished suite in first level of a private home located on the Watauga River at Beech Creek convergent. One bedroom with a California king bed, two twin XL beds, and Murphy bed. One bathroom with tub and shower. Living room with gas fireplace, washer dryer and fully stocked kitchen. Floor to ceiling glass doors on two sides allowing full view of river and creek. Huge deck with tables and chairs which includes charcoal grill and woos fire pit. Pets are welcome. You have exclusive use of the private downstairs of home. We live on the second floor. There is a large outside deck in front of your rooms which have ceiling to floor sliding glass doors, wrought tables and chairs; lounge chairs for tanning and a wood burning fire-pit for cool evenings. The deck looks down to the Watauga River which is just twenty feet away. You can fish from the back yard which extends about three fourth of a mile upriver. You are also invited to enjoy the lawns, meadow, forests, and Watauga River frontage. Watauga Lake is a twenty minute drive and has several marinas rental boats. We are just three miles from the TN/NC line on the Watauga River in the Pisgah National Forest and 17 minutes from Boone, NC. The class IV/VI Watauga River (Watauga Gorge) is part of our property. Summer is good for hiking on the twenty acres with hiking trails. And, you can fish for Rainbow and Brown Trout on the Watauga River and Beech Creek. Fall is wonderful with beautiful colors. Winter is a great time for solitude and visiting locals ski resorts. You and your dogs will love our dog friendly house. We have doggy doors and doggy ramps to the runs and yard. There is no traffic and almost complete solitude here by the river. Our dogs are Shadow, a female, yellow lab, and Willow, a three year old Bernese Mountain Dog. Our guest have the entire downstairs suite and the deck above the river. The upriver side of the house and the river side are enclosed with ceiling to floor sliding glass doors. The kitchen is fully stocked with utensils and coffee maker. We do not cook meals for our guest. We supply coffee. The deck has a wood burning pit which can be used for grilling and a small grill. We supply the charcoal and lighter. There is a ramp down to the river from the deck and a ramp on the Beech Creek side for guests and pets. The views from the inside the suite are amazing. When you walk out on the deck you are standing just twenty feet from and above the river. The roar of the falls from the class five rapids is constant and Beech Creek is entering the river on the right side of the deck. On most days in spring and early summer, you can sit on the deck and photograph kayakers as the pass within feet of you... some even wave or give you a shout. In summer we have a bald eagle that comes up from the lake to catch fish; and more often, we have an osprey that uses a tree just across the river for a fish perch. A great blue heron has been nesting up Beech Creek and is often seen fishing on the creek or the river. If you would like to fish in the Watauga River, you can start from the deck and walk down to the river bank. There is a pool directly behind the house with 28" brown trout and some great rainbows. There is a trail with multiple access for 50 yards or so downriver. You can wade across Beech Creek or walk across it to trails that give access to about 3/4 miles up-river. If you would like to hike the trails they are marked with standard trail blazes and we have selected the colors of trails by difficulty, from white to blue to black. You can take our dog Shadow and Willow who is are excellent guides. The black trails are steep with steps or zigzags but are well developed trails. You will need to be prepared for poison ivy prevention by wearing long pants, long sleeve shirt, high socks, hiking shoes or old tennis shoes, and gloves. We weed whack the sides of most trails and spray bush killer on poison ivy but we do not get it all. There are ropes that will assist with descending and then climbing in some areas. There are a number of small streams along the way. In the spring, summer and fall you may want to swim and enjoy the flumes and waterfalls. Water shoes or old tennis shoes, old cut off jeans make the rocks easier to handle. In the winter, you can walk along the banks, see undercuts and huge rock faces as well as see the powerful river flumes and falls.
