We spent a week here with four adults and four kids. We had ample room for everyone and enjoyed the property. This is an old rustic house and has some quirks, but the house is in great shape and the property is fantastic. If you are looking for a remote getaway this is nice, as the property has plenty of outdoor options to keep busy. The kitchen has a lot of utensils, pots and pans for use and there is outdoor equipment available as well.

Beautiful Home

The house was a perfect weekend getaway for a group of friends from the city. It was absolutely gorgeous and had everything we could need. We even got two feet of snow, so it was a magical Vermont experience! We would definitely go back and thank you!

Great Friendsgiving!

Loved the Friendsgiving at this beautiful place. We had 14 people ranging in age from 9 to 50 plus a pet. We had ample room and great hospitality. We also had a great lunch at Mystic 802 (recommend the spaghetti).

We truly enjoyed our stay. We spent a lot of time in the pool. I thought the water would be too cold but it was beautiful. Our family loved bike riding and running in the area. The grounds are fabulous. We also enjoyed the fully equipped kitchen. We were there for just over a week. A heat wave came at the end of the week and it got very warm in the loft.

Beautiful house and property

This is a wonderful place to spend a holiday. We were there for Thanksgiving and it was perfect. Snow fell on Thanksgiving day giving us a cozy feel and beautiful walks along a path across the field in front of the house. Be prepared for an older house. This is not for everyone but we prefer it. The working fireplace was a real plus. The Art - everywhere you look there is something interesting and thought provoking. The house has everything you need for a big group (we were a group of 10). The kitchen is not modern but has everything you need. The grounds are beautiful and very well kept. We will rent again for sure.

Nice property but limited on comfort

This house has charm and character but a few things you might want to consider. There is no cellular service, the wifi did not work and more importantly the water smelled like sewer, the heating system is dated and couldn't keep the home warm. We also found no microwave and the dishwasher was out of order.
Response from VrboOwner on 23 Mar, 2020
Bhisham, thanks for taking the time to review your stay. While we are glad to hear that you enjoyed the property’s unique charm, we are sorry that your stay fell short of expectations! We've passed your comments along to the homeowner, who completely understands and apologizes for the issues you encountered with the WiFi. He is working with the wireless provider to resolve this issue for future guests. Similarly, Vermont has very limited cell service and, while reception cannot be guaranteed, the homeowner has taken measures to boost the signal where possible. While there is no dishwasher or microwave at this property, we understand your disappointment and will work to make the listing a bit more clear. As for the issues you mentioned with the water, there is a chance this was caused by a hint of sulfur since it is well water. Regardless, the homeowner will look into the issue to ensure that there are no problems. Thanks again for the feedback. Best, The Evolve Team

Gorgeous, comfortable luxury in a pristine setting

This property was a dreamy, romanticized take on a Victorian property. There was more than enough space for 11 of us (4 extra beds than we needed!!) and the property was absolutely decked out with everything you could need. We swam, we played volleyball, we had a family archery contest, we ate outside on a long, handmade table that looked like it was from a “country living magazine”…. There was lazy morning coffee on the front porch, late night hangouts on the back deck, a sunken bathtub…. books and artwork galore… this home is a well maintained, storybook place and was perfect for a family reunion. Any concerns I had based on previous reviews were put to rest immediately - ignore them! The water was lovely and tasted great, dishwasher worked fine, everything was comfortable. 100% would stay again (and maybe again and again!)

Needs lots of work

It’s a very cute house, but its dirty and needs a lot of work that has clearly been neglected for some time. One of the showers is unusable as it leaks into the kitchen. It’s obvious that it’s been ignored for a while because there are water stains on the ceiling. From finding mouse poop in the salad bowl to broken furniture that had been taped back together or simply left broken (dining chairs, to rusty kitchen utensils. This house left a lot to be desired. Oh and there’s no AC on the second floor. Not great when it’s 84 degrees outside with only 1 window unit on the first floor.

Hi Molly, thanks for giving us your feedback about this property. The owner has some feedback of their own: I’m glad that you found my home charming, as do I. While a 170-year-old home has some quirks that demand a lot of attention, you will be pleased to know that I have a full staff of support personnel that lives in a separate building who are solely responsible for maintaining the home. As I continue to improve the home, I can assure future guests that every effort is being made to create a comfortable and cozy stay for each guest. Additional cleaning, repairs, and updates to amenities continue to be added. I wish you had let me know about being uncomfortable upstairs because you missed out on the portable 2nd air conditioning unit up there that could have been turned on. I hope that you will consider coming back to see the extensive improvements that are being made to this exquisite antique, unique home.

Good and Bad

The Good: Great locale, charming home, well appointed kitchen, pool, space for lawn games. The Bad: Though the property was advertised with air conditioning (one of our main requests) there was none. 2nd floor bedrooms were hot at night (early July). Had to go out and buy fans. Two of our family have allergies and having to keep windows open for ventilation kept them coughing and sneezing. Opened the dishwasher the first evening after a meal for 7 adults and 2 children to find dirty water lying in the bottom and the dishwasher non functioning. Contacted owner about both ac and dishwasher but neither situation was ever remedied. Evolve, the agency that handled the booking through VRBO was not a strong advocate on our behalf for a reasonable rebate. We will not book through them again. Owner was charming and polite but nonchalant about each of these problems, never offering to fix them during our stay. I am not sure what recourse one really has when a property is not as advertised, especially when it involves a key factor you used in choosing the property. The full amount had been prepaid. Some traveled from GA & TN for the week. We were not alerted beforehand by the owner and given the opportunity to cancel or accept it “as is” at a reduced rate. We came away quite discouraged by the lack of protection for the renter in such a situation. Not sure we will use VRBO in the future.

Hi Roy, We were very sorry to hear that your stay fell short of expectations. While central A/C is not available since the house was built in 1856, the homeowner usually provides two A/C units for the guests during the hottest part of the year. We are sorry that these were not available when an unexpected heatwave hit during part of your stay, and we appreciate your patience as our team and the owner worked to provide a resolution. The owner has had multiple repairs done on the dishwasher, but due to ongoing issues, they have removed it from the listing to avoid disappointing their upcoming guests. We hope that the additional measures taken by Evolve compensated for some of your experience, and we would love the opportunity to travel with you again the next time that you book a vacation rental! lovely home and pool

We are a group of 14 women who have rented a house together for the last 10 yrs and understand that each house has its pros and cons. The pros of this house are that the grounds and pool are beautiful, the house is spacious and can accomodate a crowd and the surrounding area has a lot to offer. Weather permitting we ate al fresco almost every night dining with the fireflies. The cons are that we were told check in was at 3 but the housekeeper was told 4 and she wasn’t finished cleaning when we arrived. Having a crew to clean would remedy this problem as it is a large house. I also believe the house had not been opened or rented recently as the outside porches and furniture were not clean with lots of cobwebsand dirt and they need repair as some boards are rotted. Opening windows showed windowsills full of dead bugs and there were mouse droppings in empty kitchen drawers. The main kitchen refrigerator did not work but there was another inside the back door that did work but there is no ice maker. The dishwasher did not work and we had to buy dish soap for hand washing. When you rent a house for 15 you expect dishes and glasses and coffee mugs that can handle the traffic. A little better stocking and effort is needed especially when you are hand washing. We have had the issue of clutter in other homes we have rented and this one also has that dilemma. All the coat hooks, table tops and closets were taken up with the owners winter coats and personal effects. The bathrooms also had a lot of owners supplies and need some work in that the toilet was wobbly and shower heads a bit clogged from the soft water. The beds are comfortable and the window air conditioners worked well but the bunk room was very hot and had no ac or fans. With mattresses on the floor that room was hard to sleep in. There are 2 stairways which are steep and one does not have a handrail. We did have a ‘fall’ that did not result in an injury but the rug on the stairs needs to be removed. Recognizing that this is an older home and that I believe this is the first year it has been rented out one can expect that this will be a learning experience for the owners. With attention to all of these shortcomings this house will be a wonderful place for gatherings in the future. We did contact the owner regarding the mouse droppings and the housekeeper came immediately to reclean the kitchen and brought us wine glasses as there were none.
Response from VrboOwner on 23 Mar, 2020
Angela, thank you for your detailed review. We're glad your group enjoyed this Victorian era home overall, but are sorry to hear that certain aspects didn't meet your expectations. We welcome constructive feedback to make improvements for future guests. We clearly note in the communication sent prior to arrival that check-in is at 4pm, and when your group arrived at 2 pm, the cleaner was finishing up to make sure the house was meticulously clean for your stay. The deck is 160 years old and is repaired regularly. It does get a little dusty each week when the gardener comes and is typically swept off. We understand a new case of wine glasses was delivered to you, as some glasses bad broken from previous guests. We do not advertise that this property has a dishwasher, but we are sorry if that caught you off guard. This home is guest ready and all of the personal belongings are locked away in one closet, except for a coat closet in the kitchen. All closets in each room are empty, with the exception of blankets and pillows that belong to each room. We accurately reflect the bunk room in the listing photos with the beds on the floor. The ceiling is an A-frame and only 7 feet high in the center. Any elevation of the beds wouldn't work and as the room was designed and constructed for children, they have had nothing but praise for how awesome it is. This was one of the hottest summers on record for the area, especially the week of your stay. There are three standing fans in the bunk room to help make guests comfortable. This house was built in 1865, and was done so with a different type of natural air conditioning, including the covered porch that wraps around the house and blocks direct sunlight from bombarding the house. At all times in the summer, it is suggested that guests open doors and windows throughout the house and provide for a cross breeze. This info is written in the house manual that is provided on the dining room table. The stairs are new and were constructed over steep stairs from 1856 original construction. We can confidently confirm there is no evidence of mice in this home and this house is regularly inspected by a pest control company. It appears that there was a chipmunk stuck, which was released. The homeowner does all they can to ensure all guests who come to visit have the optimal stay. We look forward to this charming home hosting many satisfied guests! Best, the Evolve Team

Charming for sure.

The house was old, so be prepared to go to a rustic old house. Interesting to say the least for the shower upstairs. The wood burning stoves were fantastic and definitely needed during the winter months. All ski locations were about slightly less than an hour, should of read the details more carefully. All in all it was a great time for the entire family and friends.

With easy updates would have been great

Beautiful part of Vermont. So grateful they allowed dogs - they were in Heaven and they are very much a part of our family. Brilliant communication with owner. Wonderful floor plan. Super toasty with the fabulous wood burning stoves. My wife was in Heaven with the books and art. The House definitely needs a DEEP clean - my wife (interior designer) referred to it as a commercial cleaning (typically hired post renovations/construction). The other problem was the sulfur in the water— while assured it was safe the smell was pretty awful.....we spent a lot of money on water to drink, cook and hygiene. Other improvements would be simple update in linens/shower curtain — make sure lights/bulbs work — throw out old soap/sponges/refrigerator items - washable slip covers for furniture — all stained big time (we brought lots of blankets and wound up placing them on sofas to sit). Back bathroom basically has a hole in the floor in front of the toilet. My wife is going to make specific suggestions (affordable showrooms/products) that are pet/kid/renting friendly to owner with the intention of helping — no judgement. These updates are very manageable with the income this house is providing. Keep us posted - if tackled - we will gladly be back! ❤️ Vermont!

Hi Shaun, the homeowner has asked us to share this response: - Thank you for the feedback. I’m so glad that you, your family, and the dogs were happy in the home. We are always making improvements to the nearly 170-year-old house and grounds, and all the feedback is greatly appreciated. There is always something to do to a centuries-old property to make it a little more modern and comfortable. - We have been testing various water systems to remove any of the naturally occurring mineral scents that come with fresh well water brought in from deep within the mountains. - I noticed that a few of the bulbs were out in random areas after your departure; however, a flip of one of the breakers downstairs brought them all back to life. There was a space heater out in one of the back bedrooms, and it was likely the culprit. They ALWAYS need to be plugged directly into the wall and not into surge protectors or extension cords; otherwise, they will surely trip one of the safety breakers installed for everyone’s protection. - In the future, please reach out if there are minor issues like this, and I can quickly walk you through any fixes. Old homes like this have their quirky ways, so a quick email or phone call can easily get our guests back on track when needed. - I'm not sure what hole you might be speaking of in the bathroom, as there is none, but that room is currently being transformed into two bathrooms to divide the laundry bath and the half bath in the guest room into two larger full baths with showers and bathtubs in both. It’s possible that you felt a small depression in the flooring where preparations are being made to the subfloors for this construction project to come. - It sounds like you guys had a wonderful time up at the house, and we look forward to having you back in the future. It is a special place that is well used and loved by us and our many happy guests, who come to our home to enjoy an experience of hiding away in a magical little corner of the world.

We really enjoyed our stay at Chandler House. The property was great for our kids to have a sense of freedom while still close by. Absolutely fabulous!

Everything about our trip was so great. The house is absolutely gorgeous. We were a family of 5 for 3 days and then 6 friends joined us. The house is spacious and there was plenty of room for everyone inside and out! The house has lots of character and is exsquitely decorated and furnished with all sorts of eclectic objects, art and books. I could've spent days looking through the books in the library. The kitchen is really well equipped for large parties. We wanted for nothing. All the beds were amazingly comfortable and the kids LOVED the bunkhouse! The host was extremely responsive! This Place Is A Disaster

My wife and I recently rented your Rupert, VA home for a weekend with our family. The pictures that you posted convinced us that the home would be perfect in every way. Unfortunately, when we arrived it was a different story. All of us – eight adults and six grandchildren – were shocked at the condition of the home and realized that some time must have passed since those original photos were posted. We found the interior of the home in such deplorable shape: • A cooler of rotted, maggoty, steaks greeted us as we entered the kitchen. Gagging over the putrid stench it created, our oldest grandson had to drag it outside as we tried not to vomit. How did your cleaning crew miss that one? • The dishwasher didn’t work, which was a major inconvenience with 14 people staying there. How long does it take to fix or replace a dishwasher? • When we attempted to make coffee we found the glass carafe for the coffee maker had a hole in the bottom of it. Thankfully there was large coffee urn we were able to use. • The potable water smelled of sulphur. We were told to let it run and the smell would dissipate. After the days of use by 14 people, it still smelled like sulfur. • There were dead flies on the kitchen window ledges. • There were live mice scurrying about and their droppings found in the kitchen drawers and living room, and likely in the other rooms as well. • We found petrified dog poo in the living room. When my daughter removed it and washed the area, she found more under the area rug, as well. • The large TV was not hooked up to the cable. • Unfortunately, the central heat isn’t turned on until November, and it took two days of constantly feeding the fireplaces with wood (which we purchased) to get rid of the bone chilling atmosphere. When we found the three well-hidden space heaters, the breakers flipped off. • The bathtub and toilet on the main floor were in a deplorable state and need replacing, and the floor under the toilet was about to cave in as the floor is likely rotted. The baseboard heating units are filthy, broken and hanging off the walls. • There are no locks on the bathroom doors, and the door to a tiny bathroom off the main floor bedroom is broken and literally will not shut. The owner has not taken any ownership for these issues; thankfully Evolve Vacation Rental, have been great to work with and refunded us any profit they made on this listing. They should delist this property from their offering.

While we always welcome and appreciate feedback, we and the homeowner believe that this rating is unwarranted. The home is regularly maintained and cleaned, including before and after each guest's stay, and we have no verification of these cleanliness issues. The dishwasher was removed from the list of amenities and has been physically removed since your stay, although we apologize if this caught you off guard. The property is regularly serviced for pests, as well as having an electronic perimeter system that prevents forest critters from entering the property. Dogs were not present on the property before your arrival, and we believe the cleanliness issue to be due to the animals your party brought that went against policy. There are several TVs in the home- all of which are connected to dish network- except for one in the kitchen that operates off of a smart TV Amazon Firestick. We wish you would have reached out during your stay if you experienced difficulty operating the TV- the host is always happy to help! The central heat was not turned on yet due to seasonality, and this was explained beforehand in the listing description; the owner also provides blankets and space heaters in this instance. We are confident that these issues won't occur for future guests, and that this property will continue to host many satisfied guests! Best, the Evolve Team

A beautiful home, a well equipped kitchen, and lovely grounds made my and my family's trip delightful. We hope to return and recommend this property highly.

Quirky old house, great for a large group!

We stayed here for a few days with 9 adults and 6 kids and it worked out perfectly. The house is decorated with great style and we loved the wood burning stoves and fireplace. Although it was too cold for the pool it seems like a great place to be in the warmer months. My only complaint was that I wish I had been warned that the heat would not be turned on during our stay. We were fine with space heaters and the fireplace but it was damp and chilly when we arrived and some of us didn't bring enough warm clothes. In addition, the water definitely smells like sulfur. If you're a laid back traveler more interested in a cool experience than the luxuries of a more modern place, this house is for you.....but if you are picky this might not be the place for you!

Amazing!

This house is huge and homely. The property is the perfect size. Plenty of room to set up lawn games, multiple options for camp fires. The pool is terrific for hanging out in or around. Didn’t know there was not a microwave though, keep that in mind when planning food! Definitely would stay there again. Plenty of bathrooms and sleeping areas.
