Liko Lehua Cottage in Volcano - Hot Tub & Fireplace - Mauna Loa Estates
Liko Lehua Cottage - Your Hawaiian Forest Retreat!
Escape to the enchanting Liko Lehua Cottage, a hidden gem just six minutes from the awe-inspiring Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Nestled in the lush, serene Hapu'u forest of Mauna Loa Estates, this newly reimagined retreat (under new ownership as of January 2025) offers a cool, shady haven for relaxation and adventure.
Located just four minutes away from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on 1/2 acre of private forest, the Liko Lehua Cottage offers all the amenities needed for your home away from home. Enjoy the screened-in outside deck, surrounded by the Hapu'u ferns and other native trees and flowers. Wake up with a cup of coffee or tea, or unwind with a glass of wine, while listening to the birds or gazing at the stars. The rainforest is all around and can be enjoyed from the deck or through every window in the cottage.
Designed with luxury and privacy in mind, the adorable Liko Lehua Cottage features an open floor plan with living room, dining room, and fully-equipped kitchen flowing together with Cathedral ceiling and skylights. Relax in the living room with a large gas fireplace with electric ignition.
Perfect for couples or small families, this cozy cottage invites you to unwind in style with:
** Two inviting bedrooms featuring plush king-sized beds and tabletop fireplaces to keep warm at night.
** A beautiful bathroom with a stunning walk-in shower and built-in heater for those cool nights.
** A fully equipped kitchen for crafting delicious meals, with coffee, tea, and cooking necessities.
** An open-concept living and dining room warmed by a charming gas fireplace, with soaring cathedral ceilings, skylights, and numerous large picture windows showcasing breathtaking views of the Hapu'u ferns and surrounding forest.
** A screened outdoor patio featuring a brand-new Japanese "Furo" Hot Tub, perfect for soaking under the stars amidst the tranquil forest.
** A separate laundry room with washer and dryer.
Relax with fresh-brewed Hawaiian Ground Coffee and a variety of Tazo Teas which are provided to our guests.
You will have private use of the entire space and grounds and access to laundry facilities. We are located directly off a paved street, with a short paved driveway. Solar landscaping lights create a nice ambience in the evening, and will guide you to your private parking in front of the home.
We are often asked about air conditioning. If you have been to other areas of Hawai`i, you will know that some areas are very warm. Volcano has quite a different climate and it is cool here with the crisp air of mountain elevation. Anticipate rain, sun on most afternoons and cooler evening temperatures. It is very uncommon for properties in the area to have air conditioning. With ample doors and windows the air circulates beautifully.
Volcano Village is one of the last areas of native rainforest in all of Hawai`i. It is an incredibly special place that we invite you to enjoy and appreciate. Being remotely located, please be prepared that there may be times of slow traffic on our two lane highway. Sometimes limbs fall on our power lines interrupting power service. We keep flashlights, extra batteries, and candles at the unit for these instances. It is not uncommon for local restaurants to be closed, so it is a good practice to check before venturing out. There are two convenience stores and gas stations located in Volcano Village. They both close early, usually at 7pm.
Please be aware that Coqui frogs are Volcano residents. They make a chirping sound that is a bit like loud crickets. For light sleepers this may be a bit disruptive; there is a white noise machine in the nightstand, if needed. Volcano Village is a small, forest town on a volcano on an outlying island in the middle of the Pacific ocean. Expect the unexpected and you will have a wonderful adventure in a magical place.
For drinking water, we have triple filtration and UV sanitation for our eco-friendly rainwater catchment system. Our tap water is safe to drink.
Being near the Volcano we are often asked about the activity and any safety concerns. The residential area near the park is considered a low risk lava zone. In the past 100,000 years there has not been a flow recorded in the area of Volcano Village. The active eruption area from the 2018 eruption was in the East Rift Zone, about a 1 hour drive from Volcano Village, near the coast in the Pahoa area. The Mauna Loa eruption of 2022 has concluded with no risk to any inhabited areas. Kilauea erupted in December 2024 and January 2025, and the lava remained within Kilauea caldera.

Why they chose this property
We chose Volcano because our friends brought us here on a "staycation" to check out the area, and we absolutely fell in love with the area. Volcano is different from other parts of Hawaii, which makes it special. Here, we are surrounded by lush forest and native plants and flowers, and we appreciate cooler temperatures. We enjoy visits to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and its hiking trails, Volcano Winery, Akatsuka Orchid Gardens, the local farmers market, a variety of local restaurants, and an easy drive to Hilo town.
