Cozy House near the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and Volcano Village on 1 Acre
For questions, to verify availability dates or to check the availability of other furnished rentals we manage, please contact the owner.
It's a 5-minute drive from the Volcanoes National Park, this house is an awesome home-away-from-home on a one acre lot. Sleep in the cool comfort of the high-elevation of the Volcano tropical forest, at 3700 feet. There’s no need for AC here! We have high quality sheets, warm blankets and comforters and a wood burning stove that can warm the whole house on chilly nights. The area is quiet and relaxing; you'll enjoy the native Hawaiian birdsong. Our double lot is nearly an acre and has many native Ohia trees with beautiful red blossoms and giant Hapu’u fern trees that can grow to 30 feet tall. The adventurous visitors can hike all the way through the back yard till you hit the street behind us. Next door are friendly sheep that will eat grass or weeds right out of your hands and we try to keep a bale of hay in the carport for feeding.
The entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is less then 3 miles(5-min drive) away, but if that makes you nervous, bear in mind the town of Volcano is upslope of the crater and safer from lava flows than many other parts of the island. The volcano has been erupting in the Halemaumau Crater off and on, if you’re lucky and it’s active, it can be viewed from different angles around the crater rim. At the Visitor Center, there's an informative film and rangers can update you on the latest volcanic activity. Exploring the park further you'll find sulfur banks, steam vents and a lava tube, which you can walk through. There are also many hiking trails.
There's a lot to do nearby, the quaint town of Volcano has a few markets, a gas station, a hardware/grocery store and a post office and is a 10-minute walk away. There’s a Thai restaurant, the Lava Rock Cafe and the Kilauea Lodge Restaurant to name a few. A farmer's market with fresh produce, hot coffee, pastries and breakfast sandwiches is open every Sunday morning, from 6:30-9 a.m.
The Mauna Loa Scenic Road is close by, where you can see tree molds, created when a lava flow encountered a damp tree truck hardening the lava around it. More tree molds are seen at the beginning of the Napau Crater Trail. There's also Kipuka Puaulu (Bird Park), a 30-minute hike through an old growth of forest spared when lava flowed through the area a long time ago.
Volcano Golf & Country Club is just a 8 minutes away. This is the Big Island's oldest golf course, dating back to the 1920s. The layout has stunning mountain views. You may see wild turkeys, Nene geese and Hawaiian hawks. Due to the elevation, expect extra distance on well-struck shots. There’s also a restaurant here. Clubs available for rent, as are gas and electric carts.
The Volcano Winery is a mile past the golf course, with several unusual wines and wine tasting. We like the Volcano Red.
There are many exotic treasures to see in every direction by driving 30-45 minutes. Punalu’u Black Sand Beach is popular with sea turtles that can be seen swimming nearby and resting onshore. Going another direction you'll find volcanically heated tide pools and a new black sand beach created by the 2018 Kilauea eruption, which blocked the Pohoiki boat ramp. You might want to visit the Lava Tree State Park, full of lava tree molds also kind of in this same area. There’s also great swimming and snorkeling along the Hilo coastline at Richardson’s Beach or Carl Smith beach park.
Hilo is just a half-hour away and is home to the Pana’ewa Rainforest Zoo & Gardens with petting zoo hours from 1:30-2:30 p.m. on Saturdays. Rainbow Falls is beautiful and there’s also the World Botanical Gardens & Umauma Falls, a triple-tiered waterfall. The Lyman Museum has an incredible display of Hawaiian geology, plant, animal and fish life and there’s also the Pacific Tsunami Museum, along with many restaurants and shopping opportunities.
There are exterior-only surveillance security cameras on this home. A $50 reservation change fee will apply to any changes to an existing reservation initiated by guests.

Super pleased with this home. Would 100% stay here again. Only issue was cleanliness in small areas - like under beds. Plenty of space, bedding, supplies, and all kinds of extras. Thank you for letting us stay in your beautiful home.

Very clean and felt very safe in the area.
Overall very convenient to HVNP. Enjoyed our stay. Well stocked kitchen for cooking.
Only down side was I never got instructions or directions before our stay. So I needed to ask the owner for this information. This is unlike my other experiences with Home Away.

Mahalo for the review Diane and I'm glad you enjoyed your stay.
As was mentioned once you booked your reservation and again, a week prior to your arrival,..."Within the week prior to your check-in, you'll be able to view the rental info, instructions & directions from the airport by logging into your VRBO/Homeaway account." I don't know when the last time you used VRBO/Homeaway was but with the current ability to put all of the documentation that my guest need online makes it available to them while they are anywhere in the world via a computer, tablet or smartphone.
Got in on a Friday evening and was greeted by the chirp of the smoke alarm in the master bedroom--the battery was dying. Even though the next day was a Saturday, the host had his handyman (who was a very nice fellow) arrive with ladder and a fresh battery.
The house is in a very quiet neighborhood (the sheep next door sleep through the night and are charming during the day.)
The house is advertised to sleep 13, but we found it pretty crowded with 12, 6 adults and 6 kids. We made it work, and it was OK, but we would recommend it for 6, not 12. The house does not have adequate hot water for that many to take showers, and the water system uses a pump that turns on every time a tap is opened. The location is excellent for visiting the national park, and the price is reasonable.

Very nice, but somewhat pricey
The home and property where very comfortable, clean and well furnished. The two bathrooms, were adequate for 10 of us, 6 adults, 4 kids. Master bedroom and bath very comfortable, but there is a water pump and tank outside the exterior of the bathroom wall which is extremely noisy, especially if you go to bed early, it may be the only water pump into the entire house. We only stayed one night and the cost as listed on the VRBO site was $225.00 per night, but the managing agent fee was $244.00, with a cleaning fee of $100.00 and taxes raised the one night stay to $576.00, for 2 family's, which is okay, but for one family it would be very pricey for one night.
Short drive to all, Volcano Nat'l Park and lunch at the Ohelo Cafe, very good home cooking and soups, fish sandwich was incredible. Ate Dinner at the Lava Rock Cafe, very good also, great grass fed burger, and salads. All food prepared at both restaurants are fresh, nice to get away from the processed stuff on the mainland, thought it may seem pricey to some, remember this is not the processed stuff on the mainland but real food on an island.

Mahalo for your review and for bringing the cost plus the sound of the house water pump to my attention. Although I can't do much with the fixed costs including state taxes, cleaning & VRBO's fees, I can make an improvement to the exterior pump/heater shed so the sound of the pump is not as loud in the house. Aloha!
This place is better than the pictures show. Nice and secluded. You can hear the frogs at night! Close to volcano national park. Fit the six of us easily. Communication was great. Definitely recommend and would stay here again!
This property is conveniently located near the entrance of Volcanoes National Park. We had plenty of room to relax inside and out. The kitchen is very well stick with a wide variety of appliances, cookware and some storage containers. The unit was clean and had a cooler, and beach towels available for our stay. . Filtered water from the fridge was a plus.
Overall a great stay!
Mahalo!

Two major issues with this place..
#1 COCKROACHES... I understand its on a tropical island, but still, the owners have been notified long in advance of our stay and yet those bugs are still running around.
#2 Roof leaked in the middle bedroom and that was unsafe mold growing in the closet. The landlord did call in a construction crew to address, but it was right in the middle of our stay and due to the health issues, my large adult son had to sleep on a kids bunk bed.
I feel we should have been lodged at some other place or at a minimum, we should have been offer a reduction in the price we paid... The landlord was silent and no longer responded to my texts afterwards.
This location was surprising. The house doesn’t look like much outside but the inside is gorgeous. The kitchen has great appliances and comfortable spaces.
Next door you find a goat farm and head the “Mhhhh” of the goats. The house is one of several well worn streets, but the inside will wow you.
The location is minutes from Volcano National Park.
The town of Volcano has several places to eat, but stock your supplies and gas before getting here!
Communication with the manager was great.
The house was so comfortable and peaceful. It was spacious yet cozy. We loved using the kitchen for home-cooked meals. Also, it made visiting Volcano a breeze as it was just a 10 minute drive.
Can’t beat the location of this property. Just minutes from national park entrance. House was comfortably spacious for 7 people and has a beautiful backyard. If you are a light sleeper, you should not choose the master bedroom to sleep in. Every time the water is used, the loud water pump goes on. It’s hard not to hear it. We only stayed for two nights, so it was doable. We wanted to be close to the national park and for that this house was ideal. One thing to note is: you do need to come prepared to the house though. Groceries or restaurants in close proximity closed early or were overwhelmed and couldn’t accommodate more customers, but this is most likely COVID related. Just bring enough food and drinks with you already.
One thing we didn’t find enjoyable, was that we were responsible to bring the trash to the transfer station. This is a service that should be included in the cleaning fee. We were 7 grown people with luggage already cramped into a rental car, so the garbage run added an extra trip on departure day. The transfer station is not 1 mile south as stated in the house instructions, but NE going towards Hilo. Luckily we figured it out, even though my question regarding that was not answered by the owners assistant. Otherwise it is a great choice if you plan to visit the Volcano national park.

Good place for 2 nights
We were 2 families of friends - total 9 people, ages 17 and up. The place was advertised as big enough for 13 people. Not true. It's comfortable to sleep for 6 people max.

There is a king bed in the primary, a queen bed in the 2nd bedroom and 4 twin beds in the third. The remaining sleeping was advertised in the living room on convertible futon beds and slept 5 more. Some would say that sleeps 13.
We had a lovely time staying at this cabin. It was easy to beat the crowd in the park when your commute is so short. The home was clean and well equipped with a firepit and grill. Most evenings were spent outside. What a treat!
This property has everything you need. All you need to bring is your clothes and tooth brush. Really comfortable for my family. Definitely will recommend and would love to stay again.
Beautiful forest property my family and I enjoyed our stay here and thankful for Greg allowing us to stay. And the Hot water works just fine🌺

Mahalo for the review Judyann. I'm glad you and your family enjoyed it. We had to replace the smaller on-demand water heater earlier this year because it was not keeping up. Aloha & Stay Safe, Greg
We rented this house for two nights. It was clean, spacious, and had all amenities we needed. Location is key- rainforest feeling and close to volcano. We couldn’t ask for more.
Going in and leaving was a breeze,
and the deposit refund was on time.
We had a memorable time there.
Thanks you,
Ronia
We wanted to spend more than a day in Volcanoes National Park, to give family from the mainland a chance to see it all. This property was a good fit for our group (adult children and parents), and allowed all of us to stay under one roof, and be up for a bit playing cards without disturbing anyone but ourselves. We were only at the property to shower and sleep, but it was close to the park, which was our top priority.

Aloha, I'm a husband, father, jack of all trades and a coach of all sports. I was raised in Hawaii and I hope you get the chance to visit and explore this amazing state.
Why they chose this property
We love it in Volcano. You can experience 11 of the 14 climates in Volcano. The ever-changing historical beauty of the Volcano National Park is amazing. The small town feeling and tight community in Volcano is familiar since I grew up in a small town on Oahu.
What makes this property unique
I enjoy the cooler temperatures at the higher elevation in Volcano. It can be over 90 degrees with 100% humidity on Oahu but in Volcano it will be a cool 75 degrees with very little humidity. And at night, the temperature cools down and reminds me of my college days on the mainland. My family really enjoys the volcanic changes that go on at the Volcano National Park. With the park being only one mile away, it's easy to take a drive after dinner through the park to see the glow of the lava. And every time we visit, we go to the Sunday Farmers Market in Volcano Village.
