FALL IN THE WALLA WALLA VALLEY — A HOUSE WITH ROOM FOR ALL TEN OF YOU
There is a particular kind of trip that Walla Walla asks you to take in the fall. Crush is on at the wineries from September through the end of October, and the tasting rooms downtown fill with people who drove a long way to be there. Parents come to campus for family weekend. Old friends finally book the Fall Release trip they have been talking about since spring. Families claim Thanksgiving a year ahead.
And every one of those trips runs into the same problem: where does everybody sleep?
THE PROBLEM WITH BOOKING FOR A GROUP You have done this before. A house that photographs beautifully, and then the fine print: three bedrooms, one and a half baths, sleeps eight if two of them share a queen. Someone gets the couch. Two couples share a bathroom. The kitchen has a saucepan and a skillet, and the big dinner you pictured cooking together turns into takeout eaten in shifts.
Booking for a group is not about square footage. It is about whether the house was designed for people who arrive together and actually want to stay together.
SONGBIRD WAS DESIGNED FOR EXACTLY THAT Songbird is a 3-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom home in College Place, half a mile from Walla Walla University and about ten minutes from Whitman College and downtown Walla Walla. It sleeps ten. It has three and a half bathrooms — more than almost any home of its size in this valley — and two of its bedrooms are king suites with their own private ensuite baths.
That last detail is the one guests write about. One king suite is on the main floor with its own patio access; the other is upstairs. Two couples, or two sets of parents, each get a real room with a real door and a bathroom nobody else is using. Nobody draws the short straw, and nobody negotiates a shower schedule at seven in the morning.
THE KITCHEN IS THE REASON PEOPLE COME BACK If you read only one thing about this house, read the reviews about the kitchen. It is the most-praised feature we have, by a distance.
"We couldn't believe how well appointed the kitchen is — everything you need to really cook meals. They even provide fresh coffee beans."
"Place was clean and roomy, just as described, well stocked kitchen and generous with the paper goods."
It is one very large kitchen with an unusual amount of counter and cupboard space, which means four people can cook at the same time without anyone standing in anyone else's way. Modern stainless appliances, a full set of cookware, a dishwasher, an air fryer, a crock pot, a rice cooker, a toaster, an electric kettle, a coffee maker and a grinder with fresh beans waiting for you. The dining room seats six and the kitchen deck seats three more.
It is a kitchen sized for a full Thanksgiving dinner, and every year somebody cooks one.
WHAT FALL LOOKS LIKE FROM THIS HOUSE Fall is the valley's best season and this house is built for it. The living room has a gas fireplace. Once the evenings turn cold — and in Walla Walla they turn in October — this is the room everyone migrates to after dinner. Board games, a movie, the last glass of something you carried home from a tasting room that afternoon.
Upstairs, the game room is the insurance policy against a grey afternoon: Skee-Ball, a retro arcade cabinet loaded with Ms. Pac-Man and more than ten other classics, a 70-inch smart TV, a wet bar for pouring the day's finds, and a loft reading nook with built-in shelving. Teenagers vanish into this room for hours and everyone else gets the quiet downstairs.
The primary bath has a jetted tub, which is a better idea in November than it sounds in July. Outside, the yard is fully fenced — bocce, life-size Jenga, patio seating, and space for the dogs to be dogs.
WINE COUNTRY, TEN MINUTES OUT Crush season runs September through October, and it is the best time of year to taste here: the wineries are working, the valley smells like fermentation, and the crowds are smaller than summer.
Downtown Walla Walla and its dozens of tasting rooms are about 8 minutes away. Seven Hills Winery is 11 minutes, Bledsoe Family Winery 12, and Force Majeure Vineyards, L'Ecole № 41 and Walla Walla Vintners all sit within 15. Fall Release weekend in early November is the biggest wine weekend of the year in this valley, and this house puts you close to all of it with room for the whole group to sleep it off.
Blue Mountain foliage drives begin just outside town through October, and Wine Valley Golf Club is 12 minutes out.
CAMPUS IS TWO MINUTES AWAY Walla Walla University is a 2-minute drive — half a mile, genuinely walkable in good weather. Whitman College is 10 to 12 minutes. That makes Songbird a natural base for family weekends, college sports, move-in and move-out, admissions visits and graduations, and it is why a lot of our guests are parents.
Fort Walla Walla Museum is 3 minutes, the farmers market 8, Pioneer Park 10, and Bennington Lake — fishing, hiking and trails — 14. Kiwanis Park, with pickleball and basketball courts, is a 2-minute walk and we keep paddles and balls at the house for you. Roger's Bakery is 2 minutes and worth the maple bar. Walla Walla Regional Airport is 12 minutes; Uber and Lyft are thin here, so a car is the right call.
WHERE EVERYONE SLEEPS Bedroom 1 — King, main floor, private ensuite bath, 45-inch smart TV, blackout curtains, ceiling fan, charging stations, and direct access to the patio.
Bedroom 2 — King, upper floor, private ensuite bath, plush bedding, blackout curtains, ceiling fan. A genuine second primary suite.
Bonus room — Sofa bed plus a corduroy beanbag that converts into a king, under the 70-inch TV and next to the Skee-Ball.
Living room — A second convertible king beanbag, with its own smart TV.
Ten people, three and a half baths, and enough separation that nobody feels like they are living on top of anyone.
EVERYTHING ELSE IN THE HOUSE Air conditioning and heating throughout, so the shoulder season never catches you out. In-home washer and dryer. High-speed WiFi and a laptop-friendly workspace. Smart TVs in the living room, game room and bedrooms, and room-darkening shades in every bedroom. Fresh linens, extra pillows and blankets, towels, hangers, iron, hair dryer and full toiletries. First aid kit, fire extinguisher, smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Step-free access at the entrance.
Parking is two cars in the driveway plus free street parking directly out front, which is quiet and easy. Please note the garage is not available to guests — some of our older reviews mention garage parking and a garage refrigerator, and neither is part of the house any more.
BRING THE DOGS Songbird is pet-friendly: up to two dogs, 35 pounds or under, declared when you book. The yard is fully fenced. Dogs need to be supervised, stay off the furniture and beds, and be crated if they are left alone. The pet fee covers the extra cleaning that dog hair needs.
WHAT GUESTS SAY We are at 4.97 stars across 31 reviews, and we answer every single one.
"What a fabulous house! Great layout, two king size primary suites each with en-suite baths — one on main and one upstairs."
"Check in and out very easy. Thanks for being so responsive with the communication — it gave us high confidence that it would all be great."
THE WEEKEND YOU ACTUALLY WANTED Everyone arrives Friday afternoon. Somebody starts dinner in a kitchen big enough that three other people can help without getting in the way. The fire goes on. The teenagers disappear upstairs to the arcade, and the adults stay at the table longer than they meant to. Saturday is campus, or tasting rooms, or a foliage drive up into the Blues, and everyone comes back to the same house and tells each other about it.
Sunday morning, nobody is annoyed with anybody. That is the whole idea.
Fall weekends here go early — family weekends, crush, Fall Release and Thanksgiving all land inside ten weeks. If you have a date in mind, take it now.
