About this property

Comfortable, well-equipped waterfront cottage in magnificent private setting.

Welcome to "Apple Tree Cottage"! This comfortable and fully equipped waterfront cottage is located on Vinalhaven island in a private setting overlooking Mill River, where the tide slips in and out. No other houses are in sight. A spacious high ceiling “great room” includes living-dining-kitchen plus an adjacent screened porch provides open air dining/lounging. Sliding glass doors along one wall of the living room open out on to a spacious deck to give the interior an airy feel. Indeed, the landscape views spill in from all sides--the sunset glimpsed from the kitchen sink being a special feature for the cook!

Outside you can lounge on the deck or, for a change, relocate to one of the hammocks strung between trees down by the water. Or wander over to explore the foundation of the original 18th century farmhouse. Then, when the tide is up, swim off the magnificent granite ledges or push in a kayak from the launch point near the property’s salt marsh. You will be in the middle of kayaking paradise!

The house has two queen bedrooms plus two bathrooms, both with tub/shower. The ground floor master bedroom has an adjacent bath. Another small bedroom is on second floor loft, with an additional first floor “half bedroom” alcove next to second bathroom. This space can serve as dressing room for loft bedroom or as separate sleeping for a single person. It also works as a writer’s corner (work table supplied upon request.)

Built in 2000, the house was completely renovated in 2017 by artist owner with careful attention to detail—and with all new appliances including dishwasher and washer/dryer. The walls are filled with original art work and a bouquet of fresh flowers will welcome your arrival. Apple Tree Cottage offers a romantic getaway for couples or a hideout for solo writers and artists seeking a quiet retreat. At the same time it is spacious enough for a group of friends or small families. (Max 5). This is a special property for those in search of peace and quiet, closeness to nature, shore bird and wildlife viewing. Check out the photos to get a better idea.

An abstract artist based in Washington DC in the winter months, I now spend my summers not far from The Cottage. I look forward to welcoming you to Apple Tree Cottage and this special island.

Why they chose this property

This property is truly magical and ever changing, whether on sunny days or in thick fog, which in some ways can be almost more beautiful. There are many trails on the property and a variety of special spots to gaze out at. the scenery or sketch (if your are an artist). Seals, osprey, eagles, herons, mink, cormorants are common sights as well as an array shore birds. If you want to "get away from it all," this is the place to be.

What makes this property unique

The privacy and quiet will fill your soul with peace. Because Mill River is a tidal river, the water warms up as it flows in over the mud flats so that by high tide, the water temperature can be surprisingly warm and great for swimming. For kayakers, the location is ideal, with numerous inlets to explore both in Mill River and nearby Winter Harbor. If you like to hike, you will also find many nearby trails maintained by the Vinalhaven Land Trust and your host can offer tips for even more special walks that aren't well known. Or just stay right there relaxing in a lounge chair or stretching out in a hammock. If you like to cook, you will find a well equipped kitchen and attractive dishes for the table. The screened porch is special feature, too, great for breakfast or dinner.
