Villa Le Rondini is a restored 400-year-old Tuscan estate in Radda in Chianti, where four centuries of Chianti history are woven into the stone. It sits three minutes on foot from the village piazza, which is genuinely unusual for a private estate in this part of Tuscany. Radda has its own restaurants, wine bars, butchers and groceries. You can walk to dinner, walk for coffee, walk to the wine bar, and come home to a hectare of private garden and open countryside as far as you can see. During summer, the 1000 Miglia and the Chianti Ultra Trail both pass directly in front of the villa.
The pool looks out over the Florentine valley below. The watchtower at the top of the estate was built to watch for Florentine armies crossing that valley toward Siena, one of the defining rivalries of medieval Tuscany.
Mornings here are slow. Patrizia tends the villa five days a week and lays out a Tuscan breakfast on housekeeping mornings, with croissants, seasonal fruit, cured meats, fresh bread, jam, honey, milk, juice and proper coffee. A private chef is available on request for the whole stay or for in-villa meals. The kitchen is set up for family meals and the lawn is big enough for children to genuinely run around. In summer, to chase fireflies. Two gazebos for the afternoons, one for dining, one for the view. The dining gazebo holds the sunset through summer, the kind of light that turns a long lunch into dinner. When you feel like the village, it is a short walk. Florence is 45 minutes, Siena 30.
The restoration was done by master craftsmen over six years. The blacksmith who made the gate is the same man behind the Chianti Classico rooster. The pink en-suite ceiling dates to 1913, restored using a technique no longer taught. There are two kitchens, terraced gardens stepping down the hillside, and a silent underfloor climate system throughout. The cantina, a vaulted stone room beneath the house, tends to become the default for evening dinners. Candlelit, quiet, the kind of space that makes a meal feel like an occasion.
