Sylvan Lake escape for 2: private island, indoor hot tub, 84' pier
Coffee on the deck while mist lifts off Sylvan Lake. The whole property is yours, just the two of you. A queen bedroom with ensuite bath, a vaulted great room facing the water, and an indoor cedar hot tub off the game room. A 72-foot footbridge crosses to your private island... nearly 300 feet of shoreline, an 84-foot pier, and a stone fire pit beneath mature trees. Coffee at sunrise, sunset cocktails on the pier, fire on the island after dark. The entire property to yourselves.

Hilltop Haven is a 5-bedroom lakefront home offered in three flexible layouts to fit different group sizes. The 1-bedroom layout, built for couples, opens the full property for the two of you. Whichever layout a guest books, the home, island, pier, and grounds are theirs alone... never shared with another guest.

🌊 **A slower kind of stay**
Days move slow at Hilltop Haven. Slow mornings in the great room with the lake filling the wall of windows. A walk to Sower's Tea Room (five minutes on foot) for coffee and pastries, or a 15-minute hike through the gardens at the Gene Stratton-Porter Historic Site (Limberlost). The chef's kitchen handles whatever you brought back from town. Afternoons in the game room over a long pool match, or curled up by the great room TV.
Evenings start on the pier. A cocktail in hand, the sun dropping behind the far shoreline, the lake catching the last of the light. Then a fire under the trees on the island... 10 chairs and your choice of seat. Dinner at Dock's Landing, a sit-down lake bar with full dinners just around the cove (paddle over in summer, short drive in winter). Back inside for the hot tub, with the lake dark and quiet beyond the windows.
The cedar hot tub runs year-round, indoors in its own room off the game room. Fall colors over the water, a winter morning watching the lake freeze, the first warm days of spring with the deck doors open. Soak with the snow falling outside or the leaves turning red.
When weather and the season cooperate (early spring through October), you'll also have the kayaks, paddleboards, pedal boat, and bikes. Paddle out to Boy Scout Island, a short trip from our pier, for a wooded loop trail and a public dock. Or ride the Fishing Line Trail just behind the house... 12 paved miles to Kendallville and back. The pier is in by mid-spring and stays through fall.

About the host
Hosted by David & Christine
We're David Harges and Christine DeSavino. We founded DaVina, our family-owned hospitality company, to share thoughtfully designed homes with guests the way we've enjoyed them ourselves... starting with Hilltop Haven, our flagship property on Sylvan Lake.
Christine and I have spent decades coming to this house with our two sons, Aidan and Tristan. They grew up vacationing here... summers, holidays, every season we could get to the lake. It's been a family gathering place for three generations now.
We respond fast, we know this house and this lake, and we love helping guests make the most of their stay... whether that's a dinner reservation, a winery recommendation, or just the best spot on the property to watch the sunset. Every booking includes a detailed digital guidebook with our local picks, plus a real way to reach us if you need anything.
Why they chose this property
This property has been a labor of love for our family for over 50 years.
In April of 1974, my dad Lee was asked by a friend if he'd like to buy a parcel of land with a small island on Sylvan Lake. He said yes, and within a few weeks the property was his. I was two years old at the time, and over the next several decades my parents (Lee and Sanna) and I spent every summer turning this property into something special. We built a new footbridge to the island, then a small metal garage, and in the early 1990s the original house. In 2004 we expanded with a game room, an additional bedroom, and a full garage replacing the original metal one.
In 2018, the entire hillside was transformed with new landscaping. In 2024, after a two-year renovation, the home was reborn... an upscale lakefront home with natural finishes, live-edge furnishings, an indoor cedar hot tub, and a complete refresh of every space.
My mom passed in 2016, and my dad in 2026. They built this place with their hands, their time, and their love. Christine and I, with our family, are honored to carry it forward and share it with guests who'll create their own memories here.
What makes this property unique
A private island.
Most lake properties have a dock and a strip of shoreline. Hilltop Haven has both, plus a 72-foot footbridge that crosses to a private island... nearly 300 feet of shoreline, an 84-foot pier, a stone fire pit beneath mature trees, and 10 Adirondack chairs around it. The island is yours alone for the length of your stay.
There's a story behind it, too. The original house on this property stood on the island itself. In April of 1974, the Palm Sunday tornadoes ripped across the Midwest, and one tornado came directly across Sylvan Lake. It took out the original footbridge and the house on our island, then continued northeast across the lake and took out another house on Round Island, and continued across Camp Big Island taking out several Boy Scout pavilions. When my dad and mom bought the property weeks later, only the foundation of the island house remained.
We rebuilt the footbridge. We didn't rebuild the island house. The space stayed open... a quiet green island just for the people who own this place, and now for the guests who stay here. It's why a 1-bedroom or 3-bedroom layout still feels like an estate, and why the 5-bedroom layout feels like a private retreat for a group.
The home is also fully renovated as of 2024... 5 bedrooms, 4 baths, an upscale lakefront home with natural finishes, indoor cedar hot tub, chef's kitchen, game room, vaulted great room with a wall of windows facing the lake, wraparound deck, and 100+ feet of mainland frontage in addition to the island. We offer the property in three flexible layouts (1BR, 3BR, 5BR) so couples and small groups can also enjoy it without needing the full home. test 3
