We absolutely loved our stay on the big island on this property. Such unique house set up into the mountains made for a great retreat while exploring the area. There was so much charm to this property and was well appointed. Want to be back there right now having coffee on the back porch looking over the ocean!
We had a magical family gathering at Hale Akala, an historic home with uncommon grace and charm. The kitchen had everything we needed to cook for our group of 7. There was nothing we hoped to find available that wasn't provided. Lisa was a welcoming host and had great suggestions for how to spend our time there.
Hidden gem! I don’t want to reveal too much on how amazing this place was since it could affect our ability to get a reservation, but let’s just say we didn’t want to leave. Paradise! Everything about the house and property was exactly as described although we didn’t believe it until we actually saw for our own eyes. Thank you Lisa for opening your beautiful home for others to enjoy.

Thank you, Eileen. Such a nice review to read. It makes me happy to keep this all up!
This house was ideal for our family group of nine. We had a wonderful time and enjoyed beautiful views from the lanai. Lisa was exceptional in addressing any questions that arose.
This was a beautiful property - perfect for my husband and I to do a vow renewal. We had 9 people, 6 adults, 2 teenagers, and one 10 year old. There was plenty of space, it was convenient and the grounds were gorgeous! The host is amazing and so accommodating and friendly. There are no bathrooms on the bottom or middle floor that are not in a bedroom - this is not a problem for us - but something to consider. I would recommend this property if staying in the area - it’s AMAZING!
What a lovely home. Gorgeous scenery, well stocked, comfortable. Lisa surely made us feel like family. I would highly recommend this unique, historical home as part of any family vacation
Hale Akala, an historic Hawaiian house, nestled on cool mountain slopes over looking Kona, surrounded by lush tropical gardens, was the perfect get away for our party of 12. Full kitchen, 3 full bathrooms, and four separate sleeping areas, easily accommodated 4 generations of our family gathering. Am looking forward to coming back again.
We had a great stay and enjoyed our time at Hale Akala. The house was charming and very well equipped. It had all if the supplies we needed for a relaxing trip. We also enjoyed meeting Lisa and learning about the house and the coffee roasting process.
We enjoyed our stay so very much. The property fit everyone perfectly and the location was great for us. We shall be back in the future. Mahalo, Mahalo! The Aldridge Family

Our stay at Lisa’s home was fantastic! The house was impeccably clean and well-stocked with everything we needed. Lisa responded quickly and was very accommodating. She has a beautiful home that was very relaxing and the view was spectacular!!!
Our stay at this beautiful Kona home was truly unforgettable. The house is spacious, impeccably clean, and thoughtfully decorated with island charm. We especially loved waking up to the breathtaking ocean views and enjoying our coffee on the lanai surrounded by tropical gardens.Everything we needed was provided, from a fully equipped kitchen to beach gear, making it easy to relax and feel at home. The location was perfect—peaceful and private, yet close enough to shops, restaurants, and beaches. Our host Lisa was gracious, responsive, and welcoming, adding a personal touch that made the experience even more special. We would return in a heartbeat and highly recommend this home to anyone looking for a magical stay on the Big Island. Mahalo!

It's the best part of my job, guest interaction. I like imagining what guests will like and making the experience better for the next ones, whether it is a recommendation for an activity, an on-island destination, or an appliance that will add to the convenience of a stay. Greatly appreciate the nice review, here, Steven!
We had an amazing time at Lisa’s home. So much charm and character. It was perfect for our family of nine. The views were spectacular especially the evening sunsets. Would definitely stay here again.
The home is a special place and the grounds and view are spectacular! Our family enjoyed every minute of our stay at this beautiful property. The lanai and the lawn views of the sunset are absolutely breathtaking. Thank you for making this a perfect stay Lisa. We will be back!
House was perfect for our stay with three couples. The views were wonderful and it was nice to spend evenings visiting in a cooler environment. The house is unique with lots of history and character.
We traveled to Kona for our daughter’s wedding. The property met our needs perfectly and Lisa was a fabulous host. We loved the space where we could wonder and explore.

About the host
Hosted by Lisa
Aloha! I'm Lisa, Hawaii-born (raised in Honolulu and Hilo) and have lived on this property for thirty-seven years, raising four children with my husband, Christian. I love to share my culture, our Island stories and history with all. I cherish my morning coffee, love food, the ocean, beach combing, engaging with people, yard work, and happy dogs!
Why they chose this property
Hale Akala is a special piece of Kona. Built in 1895 by Manuel Silveira Goularte, a Portuguese rancher who raised his thirteen children here. It was utilized by cowboys of the neighboring Greenwell family's Palani Ranch, to re-supply and feed ranch-hands in the 1920 and 30s. It was abandoned and left to the elements before WWII, eventually being purchased by Christian's grandparents, William and Margaret of Honolulu, in 1945. Wanting to retire to Kona (where Margaret's great-grandparents, Reverend Asa and Lucy Thurston--part of the company of first Christian missionaries to the Islands who arrived in Kailua-Kona (the seat of Hawaii's ruling Kamehameha reign) in 1820 and lived until the 1860s) they chose the cool uplands of Holualoa. Hale Akala has been in the family for four generations. A few cattle roam the surrounding acres of pasture and you'll hear an occasional bull bellowing from nearby Palani Ranch, in the quiet evening hours.
What makes this property unique
The spacious nature of the property, old established landscaping, dry-stack rock walls (a ranching heritage feature here in Kona,) pathways, fruit trees, flower beds, along with the home's architectural appeal will make you feel held and comforted.
