About the host
Hosted by Mike Smith
We bought this cabin next to my parents cabin after a big storm had nearly destroyed it. We spent a year fixing it up, and have enjoyed it ever since. I grew up coming up here as a child, and was so lucky to give the same experience to my children. It's a wonderful place to simply be, to take time to nap, sleep, enjoy a creek, play hide-and-seek in the trees. It's lovely.
Why they chose this property
The long story is my father grew up going as a Boy Scout from San Francisco to Camp Royaneh in the 1930's, just up the road. After WW2, and he had married my Mom and adopted us kids, he wanted the same experience of getting away from the City, so he and my Mom bought the cabin. So I grew up going up here, my older brother went to Camp Royaneh, and we spent many summers here. So my husband and I bought the cabin next door, and my kids grew up being able to run back and forth from the cabins and spend time with their Grandparents. There is nothing like a Creek in the woods for a lesson in Ecology for children. They can see tadpoles become frogs, water skeeters chasing smaller bugs, trout eating flies. At night, we wander down to the Creek and shine flashlights over the water to see bats eating. In the Fall and Winter, when the rains come, the small creek becomes a small river, and the smell during and after the rain, well, it smells fresh and primeval, like the world did at the dawn of time. We welcome you to stay and find out for yourself.
