Owner Brenda is a Yucateca born in Merida, her husband James, a visual artist, is of Norwegian heritage from Minnesota. They met in the Plaza Grande in 2008, and since then have shared their time between the USA and Mexico.

Why they chose this property

Santiago neighborhood is one of the most popular of the centrally-located historic areas of Merida, full of cultural and culinary attractions, friendly people and convenient services.

Just two blocks away is Santiago Park with a morning produce market and outdoor cafes serving from breakfast and the lunch hour to midnight or later. A renovated cinema and weekly dance orchestra concerts, craft and collectible vendors, shady benches by the fountain, a children's play area, and mass at the neighborhood cathedral all attract visitors to the park.

A supermarket, 24hour convenience store and laundromat at the corner are easy to find, along with a pair of small pharmacies. Bordering the park or just nearby are an eclectic collection of bars, bakeries, coffeeshops and restaurants including vegan options.

Just a few walkable blocks bring you to the heart of Merida, with more touristic shops, live theaters, museums surrounding the central Plaza Grande with a regular calendar of performances and celebrations, from folkloric dance to international ballet to popular music of all genres.

Walking the opposite direction on calle 59 will bring you past some grand old buildings to the Centenario Park, which fills with families on the weekends, with its kid-friendly rides and vendors and a small zoo.

What makes this property unique

Our property is one of the original homes of Santiago, and we bought it from the elderly brothers who grew up in it. But a complete renovation was necessary, replacing deteriorated ceilings and roofs, old windows, broken masonry and a neglected backyard, updating all the plumbing and electrical systems, and bringing the home's colonial style charm back to the fore for use as a vintage guesthouse with 21st century services.

As a couple we planned every detail of the redesign, conserving the thick mampostería stone walls, arched doorways, traditional cedar double doors, and pasta tile floors, designing a more ample stairway, new ironwork railings and security bars, then adding height to the whole structure to make the interior more spacious. We added kitchens and bathrooms and a compact loft apartment upstairs with a two-level rooftop terrace, had a pool built and designed the arched 2 story patio in the backyard.

Furnishings, light fixtures and ornaments are repurposed antiques from the epoch of the home's construction, with handmade carpentry in a rustic Mexican style.

Artwork includes historic photos of Merida dating back over 150 years which we recovered from internet archives and had printed on canvas, alongside James' color photos of Yucatan. Original paintings and sculptures from local artists are complemented by artisan ceramics from southern Mexico.

The newest addition is the rooftop solar panel array, taking full advantage of the tropical sunshine to power our AC, lights and other appliances.

But the front entry gate and doors and many other parts of the home are original, and keep us linked to this home's long history. Please note the little plaque with its modest prayer for blessing inside the entry door as you step outside to explore the unique attractions of Merida and its surroundings.
