About this property

Mill Estate | Historic 1849 Compound | Sleeps 13

Here's the full compound description written to approximately 10,000 characters:

THE OSCEOLA MILL ESTATE - FULL COMPOUND RENTAL
The Mill House + The McCormick Cabin · Sleeps 13 · 6 Acres · Blue Ridge, Virginia

The Property
Built in 1849 and anchored by massive hand-hewn chestnut beams, Osceola Mill is one of only two surviving mills from the seven that once powered life along Marl Creek in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. Named after Seminole leader Chief Osceola, the mill stood for generations as the heartbeat of the local community - grinding grain, sustaining families, and outlasting even the floods of Hurricane Camille in 1969 that finally brought milling to a halt.
Rather than fade into history, the property reinvented itself - first as a home, then as a cherished country inn for nearly 50 years. Today it opens an extraordinary new chapter: the entire Osceola Mill estate is available as one exclusive private rental. The historic Mill House and the detached McCormick Cabin, six acres of grounds bordered by Marl Creek, the fully equipped inn kitchen, every suite, every porch, every Adirondack chair along the water - all of it, for one group of up to 13 guests. No other guests. No shared spaces. No strangers. Just your group and one of the most remarkable historic properties in the Blue Ridge.
This is what it feels like to rent an entire inn. Because that's exactly what you're doing.

The Mill House
Very little has changed about how the Mill House is configured, because nothing needed to. It still feels like an inn - because it is one, just with your group as the only guests. From the ground floor to the second floor, every inch is yours.
The back-of-house kitchen and pantry are fully appointed to feed and gather a crowd. As a former operating bed and breakfast, this kitchen was built for serious cooking - not a residential setup, but a real working inn kitchen with the cookware, utensils, dishes, and appliances to match. Just bring your groceries and your appetite. Everything else is handled.
The dining room is the soul of the ground floor: a long communal table under warm vintage lighting, surrounded by bookshelves, board games, and decades of accumulated charm. It's the kind of room that turns a meal into an occasion and an occasion into a memory. A dining room coffee bar keeps everyone caffeinated from morning to night. The wraparound porch looks directly out over Marl Creek and the grounds - built for slow mornings, long afternoons, and evenings with nowhere to be.
A washer and dryer are available in the kitchen for guest use. Please note the washing machine is connected to hot water only - detailed instructions are provided on site. Cold water wash cycles are not available, so plan accordingly for delicate items.
Please note: the third-floor attic is not part of the rental and remains off limits.

A Word About the Stairs
The staircase leading to the second floor suites is original to the 1849 mill - and like everything else here, it hasn't been modernized. Mill staircases were built for function over comfort, which means the treads are shorter and the rise is steeper than what you'd find in a typical home or hotel. They have real character and are completely safe, but they do require sure footing and a confident ability to climb and descend stairs.
Please keep this in mind when booking if anyone in your group has mobility limitations, difficulty with stairs, or young children who need close supervision on steps. We want every guest to feel comfortable and safe from the moment they arrive - if you have questions about accessibility before booking, please don't hesitate to reach out.

The Mill House Suites
Upstairs, four uniquely decorated suites each tell their own story. King-size beds, private en-suite bathrooms, original wide-plank floors, and hand-hewn chestnut beams overhead - no two rooms are identical, and none of them feel like a hotel. History lives in every one.
The Nettie Suite - Master Suite | 460 sq ft
The crown of the Mill House and the largest suite on the property. The Nettie features a king-size bed, the largest private bathroom in the Mill House, a sitting area with sleeper sofa, dedicated desk, and large smart TV. If your group has a couple who deserves the best room, this is it. The sleeper sofa makes the Nettie the most flexible suite for groups needing a little extra sleeping space.
Hiker's Hideaway - ~290 sq ft
True to its name, this suite is made for people who love the outdoors and appreciate a genuinely comfortable place to land at the end of the day. King bed, private en-suite bathroom, sitting area, dedicated desk, and large smart TV. Cozy, character-filled, and ready for adventure.
The Chestnut Suite - ~290 sq ft
Named for the hand-hewn chestnut beams that have held this mill together since 1849, this suite brings the history of the building front and center. King bed, private en-suite bathroom, sitting area, dedicated desk, and large smart TV. A room with real stories in its bones.
The Vesuvius Suite - ~250 sq ft
The most intimate suite in the Mill House, named for the small Virginia town that surrounds this historic property. What it lacks in square footage it more than makes up for in charm - and it's the only Mill House suite with a soaking tub. King bed, private en-suite bathroom with soaking tub, sitting area, and large smart TV.

The McCormick Cabin
Detached from the Mill House and sitting directly above Marl Creek, the McCormick Cabin was built in 1873 and carries its own remarkable piece of the property's history. The stone fireplace is original to the cabin, with the historic mill grinding stone inlaid into its exterior - a detail that stops every guest mid-sentence.
At 464 square feet, the cabin is intimate and intentional. A wood-burning fireplace anchors the space, and beside it sits a private soaking tub - the kind of combination that's impossible to leave on a cold Blue Ridge evening. A king-size bed, full-size pull-out sofa, and open living area provide everything your cabin guests need. The full private bathroom with standing shower completes the space.
Step outside and the creek is right there. An outdoor fire pit with Adirondack chairs sits creekside, and a porch perched directly above Marl Creek makes the cabin its own complete world. Private, historic, and utterly unlike anything else.
When the full compound is booked, the cabin and Mill House share the six-acre grounds but each maintain their own completely private living spaces - ideal for larger groups who want togetherness and privacy in equal measure.

The Grounds
Six acres of historic Virginia property, all of it yours. The grounds open beautifully along the banks of Marl Creek, with the historic Fitz water wheel - a steel replacement for the original wooden one, installed generations ago - standing as a stunning landmark beside the water.
A clean gravel garden area is perfect for outdoor dining, lawn games, and long evenings around the fire pit under a Blue Ridge sky full of stars. Adirondack chairs line Marl Creek in multiple spots. The open field invites cornhole, bocce, and all the backyard classics that turn a group trip into something people talk about for years.
Mornings on the wraparound porch. Afternoons by the creek. Evenings around the fire. Six acres is a lot of room to exhale.

The Location
Osceola Mill sits at 352 Tye River Turnpike in Vesuvius, Virginia - a small, unhurried community in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley and Augusta County. The Blue Ridge Parkway is minutes from the front door, putting world-class hiking, scenic drives, and mountain overlooks within immediate reach. Crabtree Falls - one of the highest cascading waterfalls in the eastern United States - is practically in the backyard.
Staunton, VA is approximately 20 minutes away - one of Virginia's most charming small cities, with a thriving arts scene, independent restaurants, craft breweries, and the American Shakespeare Center. Lexington, VA is also about 20 minutes away, home to Washington & Lee University and Virginia Military Institute, with excellent dining and a rich history that pairs naturally with a stay at Osceola Mill. Natural Bridge State Park and the Virginia Safari Park are both within easy reach for day trips. Buena Vista is the closest town for groceries and everyday essentials.

What's Included
All linens, towels, and toiletries are provided throughout the Mill House and the McCormick Cabin. The dining room coffee bar is stocked and ready. The property features Starlink Wi-Fi, a Verizon network extender for reliable cell service, central AC and heating on the main floor, Mitsubishi mini-split systems in all four suites, ceiling fans throughout, board games and bookshelves in the common areas, and free parking on the property.

A Note on the Property
The Mill House is 176 years old and the cabin is 153. Their imperfections are part of their soul. The chestnut beams show wear, the floors carry the marks of generations, and the walls hold more stories than we could ever write down. Modern comforts are all here - but this is not a resort, and it's not trying to be. It's a place that feels like home, just with a lot more history underneath your feet.
Self check-in means no front desk and no fuss. Your door codes and arrival instructions will be sent ahead of time so you can settle in on your own schedule. We're always reachable by text or through the app throughout your stay and respond promptly. We care deeply about every guest's experience and want your time at Osceola Mill to be something you talk about long after you've left.

About the host

Hosted by Linda Schatz

Host profile image
Osceola Mill is owned and operated by Linda Schatz. Linda spent decades in design and real estate before falling in love with this property and making it her own - bringing with her the warmth of her Hawaiian roots and a deep appreciation for old buildings with real stories to tell.
We became the proud stewards of Osceola Mill in May 2024, and from day one our goal has been simple: take extraordinary care of an extraordinary place, and share it with people who will appreciate it the way we do. The Mill's rustic imperfections are not flaws to us - they're evidence of a life well lived, and we work every day to honor that.
We don't run a resort. We don't do corporate. What we do is create a place that feels genuinely like home - warm, informal, a little quirky, and full of character. A place where your group can gather, exhale, and actually enjoy being together.

As a self-service property, we stay out of your way during your stay - but we're never far. Reach us anytime by text or through the app and we'll get back to you promptly. We care deeply about every guest's experience and want your time at the Mill to be something you talk about long after you've left.

We're so glad you found us. Get comfy.

What makes this property unique

What Makes Osceola Mill Unlike Anything Else

There are vacation rentals. And then there is Osceola Mill.

Most properties offer a place to sleep. This one offers a place to step into - 176 years of American history, preserved and lived in, sitting along the banks of Marl Creek in the heart of the Blue Ridge. There is simply nothing else like it available for rent in this region.
A Genuine Historic Property
Osceola Mill was built in 1849 and operated as a working grist mill for over a century. The hand-hewn chestnut beams, the original wide-plank floors, and the historic Fitz water wheel still standing creekside are not decorative touches - they are the real thing. Guests aren't staying in a building designed to look historic. They're staying in one that is.

A Former Country Inn - Now Entirely Yours
For nearly 50 years, Osceola Mill welcomed guests as a beloved country inn. Now, for the first time, the entire Mill House is available as a single exclusive rental. Four king suites, a fully equipped kitchen, a wraparound porch, and six acres of creekside grounds - all for one group, with no strangers to share it with.

Four Truly Unique Suites
No two rooms are identical. Each suite has its own character, its own private bathroom, and its own piece of the building's story. The Vesuvius Suite has a soaking tub. The Nettie Suite is a 460 sq ft master with the largest bathroom on the property. History lives in every room.

The Grounds
Marl Creek borders the entire property. A gravel garden, fire pit, Adirondack chairs, open field, and the iconic water wheel make the outdoor spaces as compelling as the building itself. Evenings here - fire going, creek running, stars overhead - are something guests remember for a long time.

Location
Minutes from the Blue Ridge Parkway, with Lexington, Natural Bridge State Park, and the Shenandoah Valley all within easy reach. The best of the Blue Ridge, with the most interesting place in the region to come home to.
