About this property

Historic 1915 Home · No Pet Fees

Listing description
Welcome to Historic Willow House — a spacious three-bedroom home built in 1915 in Ridgedale, one of Chattanooga’s most storied historic neighborhoods. Step inside through the grand foyer and settle in. Downtown is 10 minutes away, and the front porch faces Lookout Mountain.

Property Description
Built in the early 1900s, Historic Willow House has lived many lives: a boarding house, a halfway house, the offices of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and most recently a church. We fell in love with it, renovated it from top to bottom, and called it home for nearly three years. What you'll find is a house that honors its history while living beautifully in the present.

Step inside through the grand foyer and you'll immediately feel it: high ceilings, tall windows, original hardwood floors, and the kind of craftsmanship that simply isn't built anymore. The front porch looks out toward Lookout Mountain, and the sunset skies from there are something to plan your evening around.

The fully equipped kitchen flows into a comfortable living room with a large sofa and flat screen TV, and adjoins a generous dining area. A half-bath sits beneath the stairs for convenience.

Upstairs you'll find three bedrooms. The master bedroom features a king bed and ensuite bathroom. The second bedroom offers another king bed and a walk-in closet that doubles as a working space. The third bedroom has two twin beds with trundles, perfect for kids or additional guests. Each bathroom is stocked with complimentary Public Goods toiletries.

At the end of the upstairs hall is a kids nook complete with a teepee, books, games, and a soft LED light. We think it might be one of your favorite surprises. Willow Front has its own private entrance and you're welcome to enjoy as much privacy as you'd like.

Historic Willow House is 10 minutes from downtown and close to both I-24 and I-75.

Well-behaved dogs are welcome here. We travel with ours, and we’ve designed the space with pet-friendly guests in mind.

Historic Willow House is properly zoned and permitted by the City of Chattanooga as a Short-Term Rental. In a city where many listings operate without permits, booking with us means supporting a small family business that plays by the rules and contributes to the community.

Guest Access
You'll enter through the vestibule at the top of the ramp along the side of the house. A keypad lock secures the door. Your unique code will be sent before arrival.

Interaction with Guests
We live just a few blocks away and love meeting our guests. As a former Rotary Exchange Student, I've long believed that travel is one of the best ways to build connection and goodwill between people, and hosting is our small contribution to that.

Whether you have a question about the house, need a local recommendation, or just want to say hello, don't hesitate to reach out.

Other Details to Note
Historic Willow House is an older home with the charm and character that comes with it. The original hardwood floors creak and the windows can be drafty in colder months. Central air and heat serve both apartments in the house and is a shared system. The living room and bedrooms have window units that provide supplemental heating and cooling. Please do not adjust the floor vents. If you need temperature changes, just reach out and we can adjust the system remotely.

Ridgedale is a historic neighborhood in transition. It has genuine character and a strong sense of community, but guests looking for a polished or upscale streetscape may find it doesn't quite match that expectation. We love its authenticity, and we want you to arrive with an accurate picture of the area.

The house has two apartments with separate entrances. You will not share interior space with other guests. Please be mindful of noise — the other unit may be occupied, and pets are welcome on both sides, so you may have neighbors of the four-legged variety as well.

Two off-street parking spaces are available via the alley behind the house. Additional street parking is available along Chamberlain Avenue around the corner.

Well-behaved dogs are welcome at no additional fee. We ask that you follow a few simple rules so that the experience is good for everyone — including guests on the other side of the house, who may or may not also have a pet with them.

Please keep your dog leashed whenever outside on the property. There is no fenced yard, but two small parks are within a few blocks and there is open green space on the adjacent lot.

If you leave your dog alone in the unit, it must be crated. This is a firm requirement — an anxious dog in an unfamiliar space is the most common source of noise complaints in pet-friendly rentals, and we have guests next door.

Pet blankets are provided in the living room on the blanket holder. Please use them to cover the furniture when your dog is on the couch.

We use a privacy-safe noise monitoring device (decibel detection only — no audio recording) in the storage room between the two units. If sustained noise is detected, we will reach out to you directly and expect a prompt response. Continued disturbance may result in fees or cancellation without refund.

Maximum 2 pets per booking. Dogs and cats are welcome; other small caged or contained animals are fine — just let us know in advance. No reptiles or exotic animals, please. Guests are responsible for any damage or additional cleaning caused by their pet.

There is no laundry access for standard stays. Accommodations can be arranged for longer visits. Just ask.

Smoking, house parties, and loud gatherings are not permitted on the property. Unregistered pets are not permitted — if you’re bringing an animal, please let us know at booking.

At the back of the house there is a security camera and motion light that overlooks the parking area.

Historic Willow House sits on a main arterial road and some street noise can be noticeable.

Minimum age to book is 25 years old.

About the host

Hosted by Kurt Martig

Host profile image
We're Kurt and Melissa, a landscape architect and architect who renovated this 1915 brick home and lived in the front apartment for three and a half years while hosting guests in the guest suite. Melissa fell in love with the architectural form of the building and found a clever way to create a guest suite that works beautifully. I continue to spend time slowly building out the garden, which has become something of a neighborhood landmark. We know this house intimately, and we're always reachable if you need anything.

Why they chose this property

Ridgedale drew us in before we fully understood why. It has the bones of a great neighborhood — tree-lined streets, genuine architectural character, a mix of people, and an energy that feels like something is happening here. This house was the entry point for us. We bought it, renovated it, and put down roots here. What kept us was the walkability — coffee, restaurants, a record shop, and playgrounds are all within easy reach on foot. The neighborhood isn't just where we work and host, it's where we're raising our family. We think you'll feel what we felt when you get here.

What makes this property unique

Willow is a 1915 brick duplex that Melissa reimagined and we renovated together, preserving the spaciousness and architectural character of the original building while making it work as two separate homes. The guest suite has its own private entrance and sits alongside the garden I've been cultivating for years — something our neighbors have noticed. The bones of a century-old home with the comfort of a thoughtful renovation, in one of Chattanooga's most walkable and characterful neighborhoods.
