JAY'S RETREAT — CHINCOTEAGUE WATERFRONT ESCAPE

Welcome to Jay's Retreat, a waterfront gem tucked along the peaceful shores of Oyster Bay on beautiful Chincoteague Island, Virginia. This beachy, well-appointed 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom home sleeps up to 6 guests and comes loaded with amenities you won't find at most rentals — a private waterfront dock, two kayaks with a floating launch, six bikes for the whole family, and free EV charging. Whether you're here for the wild ponies, the national seashore, fresh seafood, or simply to unpack and decompress, Jay's Retreat is your perfect island home base.

THE SETTING

Step outside and you're on the water. Oyster Bay stretches out before you — calm, scenic, and quintessentially Eastern Shore. Sip your morning coffee from the spacious screened porch as the sun rises over the bay. Watch the herons work the shoreline. Listen to nothing but water and wind. In the evenings, gather around the fire pit with friends and family, tell stories, and let the coastal breeze do the rest. This is island time, and Jay's Retreat delivers it in full.
The home sits approximately 2 miles from downtown Chincoteague — a quick 5-minute drive to the shops, restaurants, Island Creamery or Mister Whippy, and waterfront dining that make this island so beloved. The Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and the beach are just 5 miles away — about a 15-minute drive.

YOUR PRIVATE WATERFRONT DOCK

The private waterfront dock is one of Jay's Retreat's crown jewels. Launch the included kayaks directly from the floating kayak dock and explore the calm, protected waters of Oyster Bay at your own pace. Drop a crab pot off the dock. Fish from the edge. Watch the sunset paint the bay in gold and orange. Whether you're an avid paddler or just want to dangle your feet over the water, the dock becomes the natural gathering point for mornings, afternoons, and evenings alike.

EVERYTHING INCLUDED — NO NICKELS AND DIMES

Jay's Retreat is stocked and ready. Here's what's included with your stay:

2 Kayaks with life jackets and a private floating launch dock
4 adult-sized bicycles + 2 kid-sized bicycles (please bring your own helmets)

About the host

Sarah and I are originally from south-central Pennsylvania, but we've been coming to Chincoteague for over 30 years — it truly feels like a second home. We share a love for the outdoors and have made so many cherished memories on this island over the years, from biking the refuge trails and paddling the back bays to watching the ponies with our little ones. That experience as parents of young kids is part of why we've worked hard to make Jay's Retreat a great home base for families — we know firsthand what it takes to keep everyone happy on vacation! We know the best spots to catch a sunrise, where the ponies like to graze, which restaurants are worth the wait, and the little local secrets that make a trip truly special. We love being hosts because it gives us a chance to share this place we've treasured for decades with guests who will love it just as much as we do.

Why they chose this property

Oyster Bay is a quiet, tucked-away community where life slows down the moment you arrive. It feels like a step back in time — the streets are peaceful and low-traffic, nature is everywhere you look, and the only sounds you're likely to hear are shorebirds calling and the wind whistling through the tall pines. We don't think twice about letting our four-year-old pedal her bike down the road. Deer wander through the yard, black squirrels dart between the trees, and shorebirds are constant companions — it's the kind of neighborhood where you find yourself stopping just to take it all in. The boat dock gives you easy water access for kayaking, crabbing, or just watching the boats drift by. Despite how serene it feels, you're only about 2 miles from downtown Chincoteague and 5 miles from the beach — so the best of the island is always within easy reach when you're ready for adventure.

What makes this property unique

The Story Behind Jay's Retreat

In the summer of 1978, a factory worker from York, Pennsylvania made a decision that would echo through generations. Jay had saved up enough for one family trip to Chincoteague, drawn by the island's legendary flounder and sea trout. Word spread quickly — and by the time that first summer arrived, the whole family had descended on the island. Nine siblings, their spouses, their own young children, caravanning down from multiple homes across Pennsylvania.
The boys fished the channels with their dad at sunrise. The girls claimed the beach with their mom. The house was packed wall to wall, and with so many babies in tow, some were tucked into bedroom closets to sleep. Somehow, nobody minded. That's the kind of place Chincoteague is, and that's the kind of family Jay built.
They went home anchored to a place. So they came back the next year. And the year after that. For fifty years, the family has made its annual return to Chincoteague — and to this house specifically.
In 2017, when the home came up for sale — still owned by the same family Jay had rented from — we didn't hesitate. Jay's Retreat isn't just a property to us. It's fifty years of sunburns, fishing lines, and too many people in one kitchen. We cherish it, and we're proud to share it.
That same spirit shapes how we host. We actually stay here ourselves so we know firsthand what makes a stay seamless. Kayaks, bikes, and an EV charger are just the start. Traveling with a baby? High chair, books, and toys are ready. Bringing a pet? Bowls and waste bags are covered. Forgot your toothbrush? We keep sealed ones on hand.
Our goal is simple: you arrive, exhale, and feel completely at home — from the very first moment.

— The O'Connor Family
