Welcome to a truly authentic piece of Montana heritage! Built in 1913, this beautifully preserved building has just passed its 113th birthday and was the personal home of Victor "Big Vic" Holmlund.
A local legend and master "tie hack," Big Vic was working this rugged landscape before Glacier National Park was even established. Armed with only a broad ax and incredible precision, he hand carved thousands of wooden railroad ties for the Great Northern Railroad. His elite woodworking skills caught the attention of the federal government; he was later hired by the U.S. Forest Service to construct the iconic 1920s log structures at the Spotted Bear Ranger Station, and his handiwork helped shape the historic backcountry cabins found up the North Fork and the early boundary trails of Glacier.
For 50 years, Big Vic’s personal cabin sat right along the tracks by the historic Coram Trestle Bridge. In 1964, local cowboy heritage collector and western art author Rex Breneman purchased and moved the cabin just before the historic Great Flood, which destroyed many structures along the river. This cabin survived, sitting safely at its current location behind the Lodge Pole Art and Antiques store (now closed).
Stay here and make Time Travel part of your Montana Trip. This cabin is located 6 miles from the West Glacier entrance. We hope this cabin provides you a historic experience with modern comfort. A plush but supportive memory foam bed and a mini split air conditioner help you get a great night sleep. The cabin does have electric outlets and two lamps. The kitchenette has a k pod coffee maker, microwave, hot plate, and a fridge. Water is available behind the cabin with an outdoor sink and outdoor shower. The sink is cold water only. The cabin has a private porta potty for some modern roughing it. There is also a firepit area for roasting marshmallows and stargazing. Bedding is provided, but dishes and towels are not.
