Historic District Dream - 3 BR Beautiful Bungalow! Walk to All Attractions!
Historic District - RETRO-LICIOUS SUNSHINE STATE DECOR - Stunning 1920s Bungalow!
BEAUTIFULLY RENOVATED 3BR CLASSIC 1920S HISTORIC BUNGALOW - WALK TO ALL SITES! JUST ONE BLOCK TO THE SHOPS AND RESTAURANTS OF THE HISTORIC DISTRICT. PRIVATE OFF-STREET PARKING FOR TWO CARS! LOVELY STROLL TO DOWNTOWN HISTORIC DISTRICT, RIPLEY'S, ST. GEORGE STREET, AND MORE. UPSCALE AMENITIES INCLUDE TOUCH-SCREEN COMPUTER, TWO TVs, HUGE COVERED DECK FOR OUTDOOR DINING, GAS GRILLE, WASHER/DRYER, ADDITIONAL ENCLOSED SHOWER OFF BACK DECK, PRIVACY FENCE AROUND ENTIRE REAR YARD, SERTA FOAM-GEL MATTRESSES AND PILLOWS. COMFORT AND CONVENIENCE MAKE A MEMORABLE TRIP!
This stunning, fully renovated and updated 1920s classic bungalow - The Conch Bungalow - captures the allure of the Sunshine State with bold, bright colors and pre-Disney roadside “kitsch” and souvenirs throughout. Upscale, modern furnishings are mixed with vintage tropical pieces, creating a comfortable retreat that your group will remember fondly, as much as you will the City’s many historic sites. Authenticity abounds at this relaxing home, with decorative touches throughout - 1940s satin Florida souvenir pillowcases showcasing long-forgotten tourist sites, old wooden fruit crates, oars and water skis on the walls, and amazing curio cabinets filled with vintage memorabilia, all perfectly blended with tropical rattan and bamboo furnishings, upholstered in cheerful patterns of retro-style bark cloth fabrics.
Leave your car behind while staying at this prime vacation location! There’s plenty of parking for two vehicles, leaving you more time for exploring and no wasted minutes (or money!) searching for an inconvenient parking space. Aside from day trips to the nearby beaches just over the famous Bridge of Lions, almost all our Guests NEVER use their car once parked at the house!
Situated on a quiet street and surrounded by houses built between the 1860s and 1930s, The Conch Bungalow is located just off San Marco Avenue, the main boutique/ restaurant street, with eclectic shops just a block away from the home's front door. The house is only a few minutes’ stroll to the City's vibrant downtown destinations: the famous Castillo de San Marco Fort, the Mission Nombre De Dios, Ripley’s-Believe-It-Or-Not, the Old Jail, Fountain of Youth, Lightner Museum, Flagler College, and other popular sites, plus many restaurants and small “locally owned” shops.
Fully equipped with amenities galore for your comfort and privacy, the house has three private bedrooms (two queen and one full – with Cool Gel/Foam Technology Serta Hybrid mattresses), all decorated in a vintage “Floridiana” style; bathroom with extra-deep soak tub and shower, with two separate sinks; an outdoors enclosed big, beach boardwalk-like outdoor hot/cold shower with bench; and an 8-foot-high privacy fence surrounding the yard. With a comfortable living room, dining room, and den, your group will have ample areas to spread out indoors, or enjoy a cocktail hour out back on the rear deck, sheltered from the sun or rain by a large pergola, and equipped with a propane-charcoal grill. The classic bungalow front porch is a peaceful place for morning coffee or an afternoon book. Spend an evening at “home” enjoying the many books on old Florida, or watching the house copy of John Sayles' Florida flick “Sunshine State.”
Preservation was a priority when restoring the house to the original character of the 1920s and Guests will notice top-of-the-line architectural details, including bungalow window moldings and tinted glass door handles, creating a look that exudes old Florida charm, while offering modern conveniences. Amenities include a touch-screen computer, WiFi, DVD, CD stereo, two flat screen televisions with expanded cable, Samsung washer/dryer, stainless appliances, thick bath and beach towels, comfortable linens, a fully equipped kitchen, AND a smoke free environment. All linens and towels are washed in fragrance-free detergents. Absolutely no animals are permitted on the property (aside from the occasional Blue Jay or squirrel who might play in the yard), making it a more comfortable environment for Guests with allergies to dogs, cats or other critters. A note about our beds: Guests rave about them, telling us amusing stories about copying down the manufacturer label so they can research for their own home. And our pillows are just as great!
Picture-perfect, private and comfortable, The Conch Bungalow is situated within the historic district, for a quick walk to the City’s most popular sites, and just a few minutes’ drive to St. Augustine or Villano Beach. The Conch Bungalow is a unique complement to your St. Augustine vacation. You are invited to experience the BEST in authentic Florida décor and ambiance that the Old City offers!
The Conch Bungalow was awarded the Certificate of Improvement for revitalization by the City of St. Augustine's City Commission and Mayor. The Mayor’s letter accompanying the Certificate states “The efforts you have made during the course of the restoration and renovation of the property have definitely made a positive contribution to the Uptown Neighborhood and to St. Augustine. We appreciate your investment of time, money and talent.”
NOTES:
- Guest's ID must match the name the Reservation has been made under. Guest will provide photo of their driver's license, showing photo / expiration date / address / birthdate (this policy is no different than what a hotel or motel will request) and acknowledgement of Rental Guidelines Agreement, within time frame specified in the Rental Guidelines Agreement (24-48 hours), after the initial Reservation Request is accepted.
- If Guest is inviting any others (including day visitors, or "just stopping by") to the house who are not included in the overnight count, ALL must be disclosed at the time reservation is made and agreed to my owner.
- We do not permit motorcycles, motorbikes, pick-up trucks, monster trucks, RVs, boats, trailers, or other oversize vehicles. This is due both to the noise concerns for our neighbors, as well as damages to the driveway/driveway entry posts/fence. If you have any such vehicle, please discuss with us prior to making a reservation. Guests will provide Owner with make/model of vehicle(s) prior to check-in.
ANIMALS: We cannot permit any animal, of any type, on the property. A member of our family is currently on immunosuppression drugs. We thank Guests for their understanding, rather than deliberately creating a difficult situation that ignores the health of our family member, who has already undergone hospitalization due to life-threatening complications in the past 18 months.
NOTE: Once a Reservation Request is submitted, Prospective Guests should monitor their email for a reply from us within a few hours and respond back promptly. We verify some information on the group, prior to accepting the Request. Smooth communication and a prompt response is appreciated.

About the host
Hosted by Annette & Stephen

We’re a “coastal family,” raised on the East Coast, although our military travels took us around the world (including to Hawaii for several tours). Upon retirement from military life, we settled in Florida, embarking on second careers and raising our family.
When we purchased The Conch Bungalow, our friends thought we were a little bit bonkers to take on the daunting task of a full restoration, so forlorn was the poor house when we first saw it. But with an eye for retro-design, and employing one of St. Augustine's finest general contractors specializing in historic home restoration, we were able to retain the home’s original 1920s charm and restore those accents that had been destroyed over time, as well as create the look and style of an “old Florida” home with a retro-modern, Florida twist. The end result is The Conch Bungalow!
As the promoters of the Floridiana Festival & Highwaymen Artist Show, we have an understanding of Florida’s rich cultural and tourism legacies, and strive to provide the discriminating traveler with an authentic “Old Florida” experience at the house. Many of our Guests have remarked that a stay at The Conch Bungalow is like a journey through Florida’s past!
Now a comfortable vacation spot for ourselves, we are delighted to share The Conch Bungalow with travelers appreciative of upscale decor and lodging, and St. Augustine’s rich history. We also offer another “themed” weekly vacation property – The Hula House (#717399) - in the beach community of Lewes, Delaware (the first City, in the first State), an early 1900s Victorian-era home decorated in vintage Hawaiiana.

Why they chose this property
Staying at The Conch Bungalow - with its vintage décor and focus on “old Florida - is a wonderful complement to a visit to the Oldest City in the U.S.. And, the home’s location couldn’t be more ideal, with all of the town’s famous attractions just a short stroll away! Conveniently located smack in the historic district, you can walk within a few minutes to any of the town’s famous sites, and enjoy EVERYTHING the old City has to offer. Your days will start off smoothly; avoid the headaches of meters and just leave your cars in The Conch Bungalow’s private driveway!
The Conch Bungalow was built in the early 1920s and passed through the same family from one generation to the next, until our purchase. The house had been constructed using coquina shell for the exterior (a form of stucco, heavy with seashells of varying sizes) and Guests can see much of the original exterior on the east and west sides, and front of the house. While the house had remained essentially unchanged until our purchase, unfortunately years of neglect after the passing of the family matriarch had left it in a downtrodden condition. Although its appearance both inside and out might have been off-putting to some, we’re very attuned to historic preservation and saw a beautiful coquina shell home that begged 'SAVE ME'! A new project! Our hearts and attentions turned to this waif of a home that had a 'For Sale by Owner' sign in the front yard. So badly injured was its structure, with a sagging roof, bathroom walls that had collapsed, plaster ceilings bowing down, floors completely destroyed from termites, that one general contractor proclaimed to us upon first seeing it - 'I can build you a new house' - suggesting that it was best to just buy the land and tear the home down. Instead, we found one of the City's best General Contractors, with a crew of skilled craftsmen, and embarked on an extensive renovation.
