SUPER CHARMING - Hawaiian Vintage styled Cottage..Close to beaches and natural pool. Fully upgraded with lots of amenities. All new comfy furniture to kick back and watch a movie.

Free high speed wireless Internet,

Hana is commonly known as the “Last Hawaiian Place.” Step back into the charm and casual elegance of old Hawai’i in an authentic, meticulously renovated plantation owners home in Hana.

Once used to house managers from the sugar cane plantation days, this home, named Hale Ulu Lulu, underwent a major rebuilding (completed in early 2020 and constantly maintained) and is now completely restored with attention to historic detail, while providing every modern convenience. We There is an open and airy layout with ocean and pastoral views , elegantly detailed, vintage style bath with dual-sided claw foot tub (great for romantic baths for two), granite kitchen counters with reclaimed Koa wood bar/counter and trim accents. A sliding panel of framed Tapa cloth between the bedroom and living area allows you to relax in bed to the incredible view or, when closed, to have complete privacy from the rest of the house.

The furnishings are comfortable and upgraded with a plush leather couch and chair. We have designed the cottage with warm tropical colors, original local artwork, Hawaiian antiques and Polynesian exotica. Though the house has a tasteful and elegant décor, you can still put your feet on the furniture and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. You will arrive to rooms filled with brilliant tropical flowers and orchids, 100% cotton, high thread count, quality linens and towels and quality soaps as well as coffee and green tea to start off your first day with us – fine details on par with the finest luxury hotel at a fraction of comparable prices.

Hale Ulu Lulu is part of a sprawling two-acre property surrounded by gracious lawns and verdant foliage.

We are located just three miles south of Hana Town in the Maka’alae district, which is considered the most highly desired area of Hana. You are sure to fall in love with the picturesque and pastoral landscape, the ever-changing ocean colors and the gentle sound of the waves lulling you to sleep at night. Walk 20 minutes to the world famous Hamoa Beach (or a 4 minute drive) or 20 minutes in the other direction to the Venus pool- two of Hana’s most desired attractions – practically in our back yard!

What a beautiful quaint house with so much character and cute little antique accents. Hosts were great! Great communication and abundance of local insight. So peaceful with a secluded yard adorned with plumerias, orchids, palms and so much more. What a perfect little place to call home for 11 nights.

Sunrise in Hana.

Charming cottage, clean, well maintained, all necessary kitchen utensils. Very comfortable for a couple. Most importantly, the sunrises when you drink your first cup of coffee, stirring on the front porch, is breathtaking! Hana is one of the kind.

Cute and comfortable

My sister and I drove the road to Hana and spent the night in this home. The host was great. The house was great. The home was so welcoming when we arrived. The detailed directions where spot on. The home had everything we needed and more such as bug spray and sunscreen. We loved the vintage hawaiian decor and the flowers and leaves theoughout. Perfect place for our overnight trip!

Unique and Charming

This charming cottage in Hana takes one back in time to another era where life was a little less complicated. It's a good example of how a seemingly simple little home that is nicely cared for can be all one needs. The home and grounds exemplify Feng shui, in perfect alignment with neighbouring pastures and the nearby ocean. One looks forward to returning after a full day of exploring and just being. The home does have some critters like a couple geckos and the odd spider that somehow sneak in past the screens. The signs of life are a welcome sign, I'm grateful the owners don't spray the place to death like other rentals. The property is on the "highway" but it's barely noticeable. The home is very quiet and peaceful, except for the sounds of nature (like crickets at night). The location can not be beat. You're just slightly out of town in an absolutely beautiful area, but 3 minutes from the beach. If you're considering staying in Hana, you'll be delighted with this choice. Don't make the mistake of staying for too short a period. Hana has so much to enjoy.

Not so much

It is a cute plantation style house however, not worth the price. The description made it look much nicer and more upscale than the usual rental with the higher price and the mention of a fruit basket awaiting your arrival. There was no fruit basket and not even one coffee filter to get you going the next morning. Yes there were fresh flowers placed throughout but the place was pretty well cleared out of all normal basics youd expect to accumulate from previous renters. I mention that because i found it odd with how remote the place is and not much of a chance to just go out and pick something up. Not even a mop, just three dirty dish rags under the kitchen sink and a scrub sponge to do dishes. I swept the house the morning after our arrival and got a big pile leading me to seriously question if it had been properly cleaned. Overall the place seemed tidy but when you look a bit closer you could tell that nothing was really cleaned, just made to look clean. The beach going gear had clearly not been used in a long time with having cob webs when you open the closet door. And the chairs having rust. It was all just wrong and couldnt have been farther than what we were expecting our stay to be like. We booked it for an entire week but found ourselves running back to kihei after two nights losing all of that money. Also the views of the ocean from the front porch just werent accurate either. Nothing seemed quite right about it all.

Hana Plantation House

Envision sunrise/sunset views over the Pacific; easy access to all that Hana has to offer; and a relaxed vibe in a restored plantation home... and you get the ultimate Hana retreat. The house was prepped and ready for us in pristine condition. It was spacious for two people, though the bedroom was very small. Appreciated the opening to the living room for air flow. It was quite hot during our stay, and even with several fans going it was bit uncomfortable. I would suggest replacing the overhead living room fan (no adjustment, low speed) and adding one to the kitchen and dining. Would be better than the floor fans. While the aesthetic of the house was beautiful, the living room was not really comfortable. The vintage couch was cute, but not comfortable, and the lounge chair kind of worked. Would have loved a couple of couches to chill on, watch a movie, after an adventureous day of hiking or swimming. Even with the screen doors closed, there were quite a few bugs inside the house (it is the jungle in reality), so that was not ideal. A wonderful respite to recoup from the Road to Hana.

Great location

The location is great. Right on the Hana Highway. The sunrise is lovely. The owners have put great effort into restoring an old house. However my experience was not great. There were no blinds on the glass door. So we really felt exposed. We told the host. They recognized that it was a miss on their part. Bear in the mind, the house is old. So taps were chipping off. The utensils were not clean. We were traveling with an infant so had to clean everything twice. We had to change plans and check out early.Well we hope you have a better experience than us.

Heaven in Hana

We loved our stay at Hala Ulu Lulu. If you want a more authentic Hawaiian stay, this is it! The cottage sits far back from the road and was absolutely charming. We loved the Hawaiian decor and interesting artwork through the space. We loved the relaxed feeling of the neighborhood and were spoiled by the gorgeous sunrise and sunset. The location was perfect and close to the National Park and Pīpīwai Trail- Waimoku Falls. We took a morning stroll out the front door to Waioka Pond (the "Venus Pools") which was jaw dropping gorgeous. Our last day we explored Wai'anapanapa State Park which is one of our favorite spots. You can’t go wrong with Hale Ulu Lulu!Only problem was an ant invasion with some of our food. We kept all food all in the fridge. It is a real gem!pools to a breathtaking

The property was a gem. The directions provided was so helpful. The location is right off the Hana Highway and the locale was so beautiful, and near to lots of main attractions that Hana is known for. Our property was clean and nicely setup for our welcome. Lots of facility was available if needed. In all, an awesome place to stay at Hana. Highly recommended.

About the host

Host profile image
Mary Carol Cabibi and Steven Gayle have been in love with the Hana area for more than twenty years. In 2016 they learned that Chris and Leokane Harrington-Pryor were interested in selling the Guest Houses at Malanai, and by April Mary Carol and Steve had become the new proprietors. They now live on the property with their family.

Why they chose this property

The previous owners purchased this property in 2001 and worked continuously to create a paradise for themselves, their family and friends. In 2005 they began to offer this unique experience to the public. The new proprietors have retained all of the staff, and have maintained all of the landscaping, amenities, and warm aloha that the Guest houses at Malanai have become famous for. Only two of the homes on the large property are available to the public. As one of the few legally permitted vacation rental properties in the area, The Guest Houses at Malanai are often booked months in advance and are well deserving of their consistent #1 rating and stellar reviews.

What makes this property unique

The Guest Houses at Malanai are located in the Maka'alae area of Hana, about 3 miles south of Hana Town. This area is considered the most desirable of Hana due to its close proximity to world famous Hamoa Beach and the Venus Pool, as well as the gentle breezes and open landscape which keep it cooler and more comfortable than other locations in the area. Maka'alae was once the fishing village of the area and boasts some of the most breathtaking coastline of all Maui. During whale season, it is the perfect place to see their migration and sometimes even hear them playing at night. Our rental cottages are both situated in a completely private setting, amid glorious landscaping that has been lovingly nurtured by the previous owners for more than a decade.
