Sunset House is a 2 bedroom, 1,800 square foot house in the Russian River Valley AVA, Western Santa Rosa with easy access to Sebastopol, downtown Santa Rosa, vineyards and all that Sonoma County has to offer.

On nearly 1/2 acre in a semi-rural setting near the Santa Rosa Golf & Country Club; minutes from downtown Sebastopol and Santa Rosa, Highways 12 and 101.

Vast western sky views paint a different portrait every night as the sun goes down over mountains that grace the Pacific coastline. Sometimes a soft watercolor. Sometimes the bold, thick colors of oil on canvas.

Inside you’ll find unique and inviting open-plan architecture - a balance between public and private spaces. Where arching beams, cathedral ceilings, and golden skylights enfold a mixture of Family Furnishings, Asian Antiques, and Original Art reflective of life in Northern California. The large Great Room provides a comfy gathering place.

During the day, enjoy a meal on the Patio or in the Great Room, overlooking the grass and trees that dot the golf course. Listen for and watch the hummingbirds who dine at Sunset House feeders year-round. Roses in bloom Spring through Fall. Best time for roses in bloom June - August.

The Galley Kitchen and Bathrooms are original. No remodeling has been done, but they are in tip-top shape! New Mini-Split AC/Heating system.

As dusk turns to night, listen to Great Horned and Barn owls as darkness deepens under a star-studded sky and the air grows crisp among oak, redwood and cypress trees.

Sunset House is steps away from vineyards and farms, ranches and forests, historic towns and cities with many specialty shops carrying irresistible, locally made food, wine, beer, cider, and incredible art.

With easy access to Highways 12, 116 and 101, it is an ideal spot from which to see what the region has to offer. San Francisco is an hour's drive south down Highway 101, with many interesting stops along the way, including Petaluma, Tiburon, Sausalito, Muir Woods, Stinson Beach and Mill Valley. Kayaks and canoes can be rented at the Monte Rio beach on the Russian River during the summer months.

Take the scenic drive to Bodega Bay. Enjoy its seafood restaurants, and see where Alfred Hitchcock's 'The Birds' was filmed. An ideal location for those attending events at the private Santa Rosa Golf and Country Club -- weddings, parties, and tournaments.

“This is the chosen spot of all the earth as far as nature is concerned” wrote Luther Burbank.

Come see why. Come to Sunset House.

" There aren't words to articulate how lovely our stay was here at Sunset House. This was a special time in our lives. (Guests from California)

"Thank you Anne and Laurie for all your help with our booking and settling in so well with groceries, etc. We loved your roses and the hummingbirds are delightful. (Guests from New Zealand)

"Nous avons passe un agreable moment a Sunset House, en la chance de voir des colibu venir se desalterant ever... Beaucoupe de fleurs, specialement de magnifique agapanthus." (Guests from France)

"We so enjoyed our short stay at Sunset House. We were here for our niece's wedding and loved having our own house only a few miles away. My favorite part was sitting outside early in the morning and watching the fog lift. The history of the house was so interesting and answered questions about the architecture. Thank you for sharing family memories and helping us make some of our own." (Guest from California)

Our 2nd Stay at Sunset House

We enjoyed a wonderful and peaceful stay at this charming retreat. This was our 2nd stay and we were able to share it with our daughter from Germany and her boyfriend. We relaxed in the backyard watching hummingbirds and walked in the neighborhood. The only thing wrong with it was that it just wasn't long enough.

Perfect

This is a great place to stay while in Sonoma. It is in a quiet neighborhood overlooking the golf course with a nice view, plenty of room to stretch out and Anne and Laurie have thought of everything to make your stay comfortable. Easy access (short drive) to great wineries, restaurants, Sebastopol, Santa Rosa, roughly 20 ish minutes to Healdsburg. Loved it- hopefully we will be back.

Retro deco with hospitality and comfort!

Sunset House was a step back to my childhood of the 60's with all the modern conveniences. The home gave us everything we needed, including a beautiful view from back porch. We were greeted with a basket of food which came in very handy and plenty of towels and amenities. the house has everything you may need along with a unique personality. Anne was great with communications. Well worth checking out!

Quiet and comfortable home close to Santa Rosa, Sebastopol and Wine Country

We had a brief stay at this home for two nights while competing at Vineman 70.3. The home is located in the Santa Rosa Country Club area with a beautiful view of the golf course and sunsets. The home is unique, open, clean and very functional for two couples. It had everything we needed for a comfortable stay - we would have liked to have stayed longer to enjoy the quiet, relaxing setting. The home is conveniently located to both Santa Rosa and Sebastopol and was an approximate 20-25 min drive to the Vineman start and finish areas.

Rustic/Mid Modern Home Away From Home

Rented this home for the weekend so husbands could ride in the Levi GranFondo in Santa Rosa and the girls could wine taste and enjoy the outstanding food in the area. The home was like walking into a familiar family members home where memories are made. Truly lovely and the location spot on! Anne has taken the time to memorialize her memories in the home and highlight all the interesting art pieces throughout. Laurie is the local host and was accommodating and graciously attentive. We shall return when traveling to the area in the future. Thank you Anne and Laurie!

Sunset House

Sunset house is a beautiful, quiet retreat. It is set in a quiet neighborhood where you can enjoy walking and getting away from it all. The artwork and furnishings inside are beautiful. The back patio is comfortable and the garden is very well kept. There is plenty of seating to enjoy hummingbirds, squirrels, and other birds outside. It was immaculate inside and very well kept. The owner is very responsive to your requests and will help you with any questions you have. I would highly recommend this property to friends, family or anyone looking for a great place. I plan to return with my own friends and family when I can.

Cute, quiet spot. Loved my stay with my family girl's trip!

The house was beautiful! My cousin and I took my aunt and mom out for a weekend getaway after their father passed away. They were having a very stressful month and this Sunset House really gave them a great getaway. The vintage pieces of art and the great light that shone into the house really brought us back into the 1960's feel. Just perfect. Place was homey and so cute. My aunt and mom fell in love in the place and was so comfortable for their first vacation home experience. They had no problem feeling relaxed in this home and I couldn't recommend it more. Thank you, Anne for the stay, my aunt and mom really enjoyed and were able to get long quality sleep in for the weekend. Thank you!

Wonderfully quiet and clean

We visited Santa Rosa for a wedding and shared the house with our son and his wife. While other wedding guests were commenting on the cost of their hotel and the uncomfortable bed, we smiled and patted ourselves on the back for our excellent choice for the weekend. Super clean and comfortable. My favorite was having my first cup of coffee on the back porch and watching the golfers and the hummingbirds. We'll be back for at least 3 more weddings, and we'll claim Sunset House as our home base. If you can, bring your bicycles and enjoy the beautiful trails nearby. A dozen wineries less than 5 miles from Sunset House. Bliss.

You won't want to leave!

Anne's Sunset house is fantastic! We came down for my mom and her friends 60th birthday and wine tours and this place was our favorite part of the trip! Everything in Sunset is beautiful and serene. The patio in the backyard is best place to sit drinking your wine and watching hummingbirds. The architecture, the history and the artwork are all beautiful and amazing! Anne's tips and recommendations were top tier! the grocery stores she recommended we could have ordered everything from and her recommendation to Korbel winery was our favorite winery we visited! Everything is close by and you still get to enjoy total peace and quite out at Sunset. We couldn't have been happier with the place. We will 100% be booking this place for our next trip to Santa Rosa as I don't see a reason to look for anything better than paradise at Sunset :)

Special house with perfect setting

I highly recommend booking the Sunset House for any reason one might need a place to stay in Santa Rosa. The house is loaded with history and beautiful art. The location feels serene & 'far away from it all' but is very close to everything. If you love plants & flowers inside & out...this is your place. Thank you Anne!

Quiet retreat close to lots of wine!

Great location -- Quiet, relaxing neighborhood. Close to many, many wineries -- We even walked to a few. The location is also about 10 minutes from a cool little town called Sebastopol, which has many restaurants, taverns and shopping in downtown to walk to. (I recommend HopMonk) The house is clean and comfortable with a well appointed kitchen if you want to cook. There is a BBQ in the backyard but we ran out of time to fire it up. Great time in a nice spot.

Great house in great location

My sister and I stayed at Sunset House for four nights. It was perfect. We loved the architecture, the spaciousness, the patio for morning coffee, the patio for evening wine while watching the sunset, and the convenience of its location for visiting vineyards. We also liked the quiet, the birds, and the gorgeous flowers. If we, or anyone we know, plans a trip to wine country, we will definitely suggest staying here. The owner and her manager were very easy to work with, and were responsive to our questions and requests.

Absolutely Incredible

We did an extended stay and Anne, the owner, was the most pleasant host to work with. We were a bit high maintenance and she was incredible and the most accommodating to our needs. The house has amazing architecture and is extremely clean. We have recommended this home to all of our friends and co-workers in the area and will definitely use it in the future for short and long duration stays.

Comfortable place in beautiful area

My husband, my daughter, her boyfriend and I had a wonderful stay at Sunset House. There was plenty of room: great room AND a living room, back yard overlooking roses and the golf course, very large master bedroom... My husband and I took several walks in the neighborhood. Over the course of three days we went to two wineries (Merry Edwards and Bolletto), ate at two nice restaurants in the Barlow (Woodfour and Zazu), walked down Florence Avenue and admired the sculptures, and relaxed at Sunset House. The kitchen is very well equipped and we were very grateful for the fresh bread and fruit that was left for us by our hosts. We would definitely go back and would also recommend Sunset House to friends.

The best first experience for the Santa Rosa area!

We took a drive to Bodega Bay and ate the best crab sandwiches we have ever had at Fisherman's Cove. We were told by multiple locals to stop at Wild Flour in Freestone and I’m so glad we did because they have some amazing baked goods. We ate some delicious Italian at Ca Bianca in Santa Rosa. Our last dinner in Santa Rosa was at Starks Steak House and it did not disappoint. We attempted to go to Russian River but didn't want to wait in line so we went down to the Ale house brewery. It was a great trip and everything just seemed to work out every time we ventured out. We love the area, and definitely plan on going back hopefully sooner than later. The house was so peaceful and relaxing. Thank you again for the opportunity to stay at such a lovely home during our stay in Santa Rosa. We greatly appreciated the hospitality. I highly recommend staying here because you’re so close to everything you need. Thank you again Anne and Laurie! We can’t wait to go back!

Very Comfortable and Peaceful Home in Wine Country.

My wife, daughter and I were in Santa Rosa for a USFSA's National Showcase skating competition and thoroughly enjoyed this property. It is located in a quiet neighborhood with very easy access to the highway system. It's a short drive from Sebastopol and a slightly longer drive to downtown Santa Rosa with easy access to wine country. We were going mostly to Snoopy's Home Ice in Santa Rosa, but managed to visit a few wineries between competitions. The house is comfortable for a small group and the shared bathing facility would be workable for 2 couples and manageable. It is well equipped and has a very spacious feel for the square footage. The decor and finish is 70's, very well maintained with the furniture in excellent condition. Be aware that while the view of the golf course is very nice, the covered pool does detract from it. It was fully disclosed in the rental agreement, and I can certainly understand the need to restrict access to the pool, and even not wanting to deal with the maintainence issue of keeping it uncovered, but as a renter be aware that it does detract from the peacefulness of the view. Not a huge deal, but something to be aware of. All in all the house was very nice and met our needs perfectly. I'd recommend it.

About the host

Hosted by Anne Gray

Host profile image
This is a photo of a female Anna's hummingbird according to Tim Stewart of Wild Birds Unlimited, Santa Rosa. They live in the area year-round and dine at the two Sunset House feeders. This one is on the Patio.

Best time to catch them feeding? Early mornings and evenings when the air is coolest. See them from the Patio, Galley Kitchen or Great Room windows. Or from the Master Bedroom window seat when the second feeder is located in Daybreak Rose Garden.

They are very possessive of their feeders and will sometimes dive at you from afar when it's feeding time and you are too close to the feeders. They keep their distance though.

Sometimes they will head-in to feed and upon seeing you stop in mid-air. That's the best time to see them up-close - still and beautiful but with wings operating at full speed!

Why they chose this property

Sunset House is very private and peaceful. It sits on nearly 1/2 acre overlooking the lush greenery, oaks and cypress trees of the Santa Rosa Golf & Country Club, surrounded by farms and vineyards. It is an ideal spot for those attending events at the Santa Rosa Golf & Country Club, and for touring the wine country, participating in a triathlon, visiting the Russian River, or simply to relax, unwind and regenerate.

What makes this property unique

Stunning western views day and night.

Inspiring open plan architecture with arching beams and cathedral ceilings.

Family furnishings, local art, and antiques.

Centrally located for wine country and local exploration.

Private and peaceful -- situated on nearly 1/2 acre.

Near the private Santa Rosa Golf & Country Club; the perfect place to stay when attending club events.

Well-tended gardens full of roses and other perennials. They bloom nearly all year. The photos show them "at their very best". No guarantees they will be blooming so profusely during your stay though.

They include David Austin's Abraham Darby, Tamora, and Benjamin Britten, in addition to About Face, Distant Drums, Julia Child, Pope John Paul, Marilyn Monroe, Barbra Streisand, Queen Elizabeth and Hot Cocoa.

Home to hummingbirds year-round who dine at Sunset House feeders. According to Tim Stewart from Wild Birds Unlimited in Santa Rosa, they are most likely 'Anna's Hummingbirds and from their coloring the two photos on this listing indicate that they are female Anna's. Anna's hummingbirds are not migratory, so they live here year-round. When you get familiar with their chirp you will hear them in the trees when feeding time nears. If you are quiet, don't move and are lucky, you will see them feed. They can be a few feet away from you, suspended in mid-air by the fast beating of wings and are facinating to watch.
