About this property
In peaceful rural location within walking distance of lovely pub, near Bath.
Poppies is a 17th century stone cottage. It is situated in the grounds of the owner’s property in the conservation area of Hinton Blewett. The cottage enjoys views across open countryside and has been thoughtfully restored with the environment in mind. The heating and hot water are provided by an air source heat pump and solar thermal. It is an easy walk up to the village pub, which is highly rated by guests. The Chew Valley lake is a 10 minute drive, where you can enjoy bird-watching, walking and fishing. The Salt and Malt is an award-winning fish and chip restaurant overlooking the lake. The accommodation offers two bedrooms: a main bedroom with superking-size bed which can be converted to twin beds on request and a smaller double bedroom. Bathroom: with a roll-top bath and overhead shower plus WC. Separate WC on the ground floor. Sitting room with flagstone floor (and rug), sofa and armchairs, feature fireplace and wood-burner and smart TV. The kitchen (with hand-built solid wood units) /diner has a flagstone floor, electric oven, fridge/freezer and microwave oven. There is a utility room with washing machine and electric airer. Outside there is a gravelled courtyard with a paved seating area in front of the cottage, flowerbeds and a bench in the corner which catches the afternoon sun. Amenities: parking for two cars in courtyard. In 2025 we had a pair of spotted flycatchers nesting in the alcove next to the front door of Poppies from June to mid July. Guests may be asked to make some adjustments to enable these increasingly rare birds to breed successfully.

Thank you for all your very positive comments. I'm delighted you enjoyed your stay in Poppies.
Had a lovely stay in Poppies cottage, everything was clean and tidy. The cottage is beautiful and the surrounding area stunning. Also a brilliant pub 5 minutes walk from the cottage, serving delicious food. Perfect if visiting Bath, far enough from the city that you're getting the best of both country and city life.
Lovely clean, warm cottage. Very comfortable bed. Dogs loved the walk in the fields opposite. Very friendly host. Fantastic pub just a short stroll up the lane. Amazing food.Would definitely recommend 5*

This is a wonderful cottage with everything we needed and a bed so comfortable that my wife wants one just the same. A great location for seeing the area and Judith was the most welcoming host. We would definitely stay here again if we are in the area and recommended the cottage unreservedly.

Thank you for your lovely review! I think comfortable beds are very important and I'm delighted you slept well!
We had the most wonderful early May bank holiday weekend at Poppies, and honestly, we can't fault a thing. The cottage itself is absolutely gorgeous, so cosy and immaculately clean. The kitchen had all the essentials we needed to cook during our stay. The bedrooms were incredibly comfortable and the shower over the bath was the perfect way to freshen up after exploring. The location was fantastic. Tucked right in the heart of the countryside, it was wonderfully peaceful and quiet, exactly what we needed. But it's also brilliantly positioned as a base for exploring. We visited Pensford viaduct and woods, Cheddar, and Bristol all within 30 minutes' drive. One small note, the courtyard fits two cars, but would suggest they need to be small to medium-sized. We had two medium-ish cars and it was a little tight, so anything bigger might be tricky. Judith was an absolutely incredible host throughout, super responsive, helpful, and check-in was so straightforward. We felt so genuinely welcome.
Very lovely house and good facilities. The house is very clean and Judith is a nice person and help you with al you questions. The kitchen facilities are very good.

Thank you for kind comments. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay.
Cozy, comfortable ecofriendly cottage in a country setting. Our host, Judith, was great...very helpful with ideas on activities. I appreciated the ecofriendly nature of the property with energy saving aspects like an air sourced heat pump and heated drying rack versus a machine.

About the host

I am a qualified languages teacher, but began my career in broadcasting at the BBC and BFBS. I'm really enjoying my state of semi-retirement which has enabled me to pursue my many interests, not least walking and bird watching. I love living in the Chew Valley which has so much to offer and I look forward to sharing its delights with my guests. While it is situated in beautiful countryside, it is within easy reach of Bristol, Bath and Wells. The former are particularly good for lovers of history, theatre, cinema and art. My two grown-up sons also enjoy coming home to the peace and quiet of the Chew Valley.
Why they chose this property
I moved to the Chew Valley from London with my family thirty years ago and I have never regretted doing so. Greenway Cottage was an empty shell and Poppies was derelict when we came here. I began work on renovating Poppies in 2011, slowly restoring it and finally finishing furnishing it in 2016. A lot of love and attention to detail has gone into this work, and I hope you will love it as much as I do. I care passionately about the natural world and the environment, so Poppies has been restored with this in mind. It is equipped with solar thermal and photovoltaic panels (discreetly situated on the field facing side of the roof) .Hating is provided by an air source heat pump. Both properties have original circular stone staircases, though the one in Poppies is purely decorative and now serves as a bookshelf. It is an ideal situation: very rural and yet so close to centres of culture and shops! Despite its rural location, it is very accessible, by car at least. Sadly public transport is very limited.
What makes this property unique
The unique benefits are: peace and quiet with lovely views and a network of public footpaths on the doorstep and yet so close to Wells, Bath, Cheddar, Bristol, Glastonbury and many other places of interest. You can walk to the village pub which has great views and serves excellent food. There are so many interesting places nearby, not least Holt Farm, the home of Yeo Valley, producers of organic dairy products. They have a fabulous garden which is open to visitors on certain days and an amazing workers canteen which is now open to the public for lunch (booking in advance essential) or coffee. It's worth exploring their website. https://www.yeovalley.co.uk/the-valley/events-in-the-valley. Camely Lodge is twenty minutes away on foot and there are two farm shops with restaurants and cafes if you are up for a longer walk! Farrington Farm also offers a host of activities for children. Chew Valley Lake is 5 minutes drive away.
