About this property

Enjoy the quiet side of the Door County peninsula, 190' of Lake Michigan shore

Enjoy both sunrise and sunset from our private pier. Comfortable, rustic 2 bedrooms, living room, dining room, one full bath, well equipped kitchen, electric heat, fully carpeted. Sleeps 6. Wood-burning stove. The Haven is located at 1499 Goodnow Rd, Baileys Harbor, WI

Unwind, decompress, unplug, and reconnect with friends or family and the quiet sounds of nature. Great area for biking, swimming, kayak/canoeing, hiking, and fishing. Functional cell phone service (AT&T LTE/4G good, Verizon generally better). No broadcast TV or cable. We do have a flat screen TV with DVD/VCR unit, many movies, and HDMI input. Parking available for three cars. While we have hosted up to 8 (2 on pull-out sofa bed in living room), it is more comfortable for 6. Baileys Harbor quiet hours are 10pm to 8am.

Please be aware that this is a rustic cabin. There is no landline phone, no cable, no satellite dish, or WiFi, and no air conditioning, no dishwasher. The idea behind the Haven is to simplify with a game of horseshoes, enjoy the hammock, relax with a good book, movie or board-game. The Haven is well situated less than a mile from dining at Gordon's Lodge or six miles from shopping in either Baileys Harbor, Ephraim, or Sister Bay.

Available late May through October:
Please bring own bed linens and towels. We furnish pillows and blankets. NOTICE: we have our pier taken in for the off-season. Due to damaging storms that seem to be occurring earlier each year, the pier may not be in until June and out as early as early-September. Please inquire about the availability of the pier when renting in September and October. We do have a permanent deck overlooking North Bay about six feet above the water that is available all season.

We prefer that reservations and payments be made online through VRBO. Contact the owners (Sam and Janet Batzli) with questions or rental requests at:

Nice setting

Nice stay. Owner has laid out the info properly. Only thing that could have been improved on was the dust and webs upon arrival. Very nice and quiet stay

Pleasant and very quiet

Comfortable family home. It was clean enough, and just about everything worked, but it was definitely not as clean as during our stay last year. Otherwise, the Haven is a sweet place to spend a few days. We had lots of fun exploring many places around Door County.

Home away from home

We return to the Haven every year because it feels like home. The home is comfortable, has everything we need, and you can't beat the view and water access. The kayaks and canoe make it easy to enjoy the water and it's great to have the option of the upper and lower decks. The Haven and North Bay are a special place. Can't wait to return next year!

Sweet cabin on the bay

This cozy sweet cabin feels like a well-loved family retreat. It is surrounded by woods but sits right on Lake Michigan. It’s comfortably furnished and supplied, but isn’t fancy. There are neighboring properties, but no one was around when we visited, so we had total quiet. Very peaceful and nice.

Extended weekend get-away

The house was very clean and had everything we needed in the kitchen to cook our own meals. The two sitting areas right on the water were wonderful and relaxing. Enjoyed the kayaks, paddle board and hammock. DVD selection was good. Went in to Bailey’s Harbor for the farmers market which was a short drive. Overall a very relaxing weekend on a peaceful lake.

Tranquility

The cedar trees, sounds of the water, glorious sunrise and sunset, peace. And then a convenient trip to Bailey’s Harbor or Sister Bay or Fish Creek or Ephriam. Much gratitude for sharing your space.

Home away from home

We've been to the Haven so many times now, we like to consider it our home away from home. It's the perfect spot for our family of 4 to escape the heat and humidity of the lower mid west. This year we enjoyed the extended lower deck. The water was warmer this year and we spent a lot of time there swimming, lounging and launching the SUP and kayak. Our summer is not complete without a visit to North Bay!

Sunrises and sunsets

We only had four days at The Haven, but we will definitely want to return. Enjoying both a sunrise and a sunset from the same property is a real treat along with kayaking North Bay and exploring next door’s Walt’s Woods. We forgot that there was no WiFi, but our phone coverage handled any necessary internet streaming needs. We liked the seclusion but appreciated the fairly short drive times to the various towns. Thank you for sharing your piece of paradise. Anne and Mark

Our Favorite Place in Door County

This is our third time staying at the Haven and it was as lovely as ever. This peaceful setting and the beautiful surroundings make this little cottage in the woods incredibly special. We loved the new stairs to the dock so we could finally launch our kayaks right from the dock! It was great! The house is cozy and comfortable, and you can just feel all of the wonderful family memories that have been made there. It’s spotless, and the chairs and couch make for some great napping after a long day of hiking. Don’t miss Walt’s Woods - the conservancy area right at the top of the drive. Wonderful and peaceful - we love The Haven!

We had a very relaxing and enjoyable stay at The Haven on the shores of North Bay. The area is very beautiful, quiet and condusive to just enjoying nature and putting aside all the worries that fill our lives. We loved sitting on the deck at night and star gazing as well as kayaking on the beautiful bay.

Another great stay at The Haven!

The Haven is the greatest. A prime location on beautiful Lake Michigan but also nestled in the woods. This is our second year staying here and we are already looking forward to our next stay. We love that it’s so close to everything while still being private.

Our Favorite Place in DC

Having made numerous trips to Door County over the past 20 years, this is the only place we have stayed twice. While we love to explore, this cottage is the perfect place for us. It is spotlessly clean, and the beds are incredibly comfortable. The property blends the best of a cabin in the woods with a cabin on the water, and you can enjoy both in the same stay! The yoga deck is terrific for watching both sunrise and sunsets, and it's a short walk to Gordon Lodge for dinner if you want! The living space is comfortable for curling up on a rainy day and reading, and the kitchen is fully stocked for any kind of cooking. If you want a place that really helps you unwind and relax, this is definitely the place.

Home away from home

We are repeat visitors to The Haven - we rebook for the following year before our current vacation even ends! We have been coming to Door County for many years, having lived in Sturgeon Bay 20+ years ago as Coasties. We've stayed in several areas of the county, but North Bay and The Haven are our favorite. The house has everything we need for our family of 4. We immediately feel at home and relaxed. The addition of the kayaks this year was really nice - we used them a lot. The owners and housekeeper are very easy to work with. If you're looking for a quiet spot with lake access, this is the place! No one wanted to go home this year...we are all looking forward to our 2021 trip!

Excellent, beautiful location on North Bay. Everything as advertised. My family of five, two adults and three kids 5 and under, had a great time. Swim, boat, hike, have campfires—you can do it all here.

The Perfect Getaway

Our family has been renting houses in Door County for years and this is by far our favorite. From the beautiful (and convenient) location on North Bay, the mix of woods and water and the coziness of the house, we loved it. The house is a nice open plan with plenty of room to be together, but also have some solitary space. The deck in the front and back provided other nice places to ponder, but the special place was the yoga deck overlooking the water. It was where a mink came almost right up to me, then started because he didn’t realize I was there. There’s a great firepit in the woods, and the comfy living room with wonderful lounging chairs became the place we read on the rainy evening. The house was exceptionally clean, and felt like a family member’s cottage. Even the beautiful watercolors done by the owners filled the house with a feeling of a well loved refuge. We were there with 2 of our 20-something sons and they were as taken with the Haven as we were. A beautiful, restful and welcoming place.

About the host

Hosted by Sam and Janet Batzli (owners)

Host profile image
Janet and Sam live in Madison, Wisconsin. Janet's family has deep ties to Door County dating back to the 1800s. We feel so fortunate to be able to spend time at The Haven and to be able to share it with visitors from around the world.

Why they chose this property

The south shore of North Bay is a very special place. Ecologically it is considered a boreal forest because of its mix of conifers, deciduous trees, lichens and mosses, which are more commonly found north of Lake Superior in Canada. The lake shore provides a cooling effect in the summers that permits these species to grow far south of their common range. The Lake Michigan-side of the peninsula is typically 5-10 degrees cooler than the middle or the Green Bay-side of the peninsula. You may even need a sweatshirt on July evenings.

You will quickly discover why this is called 'the quiet side' of the Door County Peninsula. The main attraction of North Bay is its natural beauty, fresh air, and peacefulness. Much of the North Bay area has been designated a protected natural area. The Nature Conservancy, the DNR, and the Door County Land Trust have worked together to preserve the natural splendor. The most recent addition is Walt's Woods which adjoins The Haven property, and its trail head can be found at the top of our drive way. Visit http://www.doorcountylandtrust.org/ for more info about area natural areas.

What makes this property unique

There are so many fun things to do in Door County and staying at The Haven is a great way to have access without being in the middle of the crowd. These are some of our family's favorite activities and destinations over the years. Please check ahead to see if these options are still available. We are not always able to keep these up-to-date:

1) Biking -- Door County offers some of the nicest biking roads in the state.
2) Eagle Tower – spectacular tower with ramp and view of Eagle Harbor
3) Peninsula State Park -- great beaches, mountain biking, hiking (try Eagle Trail if you are a strong hiker), and golf -- only 15-minutes away.
4) Washington Island/Rock Island -- get an early start, take the ferry from North Port, consider taking bikes for the island. Good summertime food (ice cream and burgers) at the Albatross, rocky shores of School House Beach, hop on another short ferry to the historic Rock Island.
5) Peninsula Players -- get there early to enjoy the sunset before showtime
6) Jumping off the pier in Sister Bay -- the water is almost always warmer over there ;-)
7) Cave Point County Park -- on a windy day the waves can act like geysers
8) Cherry picking -- everywhere when in season, or go to Koepsels on HWY 57 (9669 Hwy. 57 Baileys Harbor, Wisconsin, Phone: (920) 854-2433) and buy a cherry pie
9) Nature walk at The Ridges Sanctuary -- walk the board walks but don't forget the mosquito repellent
10) Mini golf at Pirates Cove, a movie at the Skyway Drive-In, bowling at the Sister Bay Bowl, or craft beer at the Door County Brewing Tap House. Also, Bier Zot/Wild Tomato Pizza in Sister Bay.

All of these things (except maybe Washington Island) are a short drive or long bike ride from The Haven.
