The castle of Strassoldo represents the heart of my life. Since childhood, when I lived abroad and came here on holiday to visit my grandparents, this magical place has fascinated me. Over the years, that childlike enchantment transformed into a deep sense of responsibility towards this millennial heritage.
When I began the restoration journey, many buildings in the complex were complete ruins - the rice-husking mill, the tower, the men-at-arms houses, the vicinia, the new kitchen. I even decided to buy back the chancellery, which had been sold by my grandfather, not because I needed more roofs to restore, but to preserve the historic integrity of the complex which risked being turned into a beer hall.
I often hear people tell me how lucky I am to live in a castle. I smile and reply that the real fortune was having the determination to save it. It has been relentless work, often going against the tide and without external support, but the passion for this place - and perhaps the positive spirit of my ancestors that lingers in the air - have given me the strength to persevere.
I have always insisted on philologically correct restorations, using natural materials and traditional techniques. My vision has been to preserve the authentic soul of the castle, not to create an artificial version. Every restored building tells a story of dedication and respect for history.
Today, seeing guests appreciate this authenticity and breathe in the castle's atmosphere is my greatest satisfaction. Your stay here helps keep this extraordinary historical heritage alive for future generations.
I wish you an unforgettable experience in this place that is so special to me and my family
Many warm regards,
Gabriella Williams di Strassoldo
Why they chose this property
Step into a Thousand Years of History: Welcome to the Strassoldo di Sopra castle
Imagine walking through a medieval borgo where time stands still - this is the heart of Strassoldo, one of Italy's most beautiful villages, built around twin castles (di Sopra e di Sotto) that have been our family's home for over a millennium. Here, authenticity isn't just preserved; it's lived daily within ancient walls that whisper centuries of stories.
Nestled in the heart of Friuli Venezia Giulia, Strassoldo sits at a magical crossroads where Italian, Austrian, and Slavic cultures merge. This unique heritage comes alive in every corner: from the architectural details of our historic buildings to the flavors of our local cuisine, each element tells a story of cultural fusion.
Our centuries-old gardens and our neighbors’ surrounding vineyards create an enchanting backdrop for your stay. From this privileged position, you're perfectly placed to explore the region's treasures: bask on the golden beaches of Grado, walk through the ancient Roman ruins of UNESCO-listed Aquileia, savor wines at prestigious local wineries, or discover the elegant cities of Udine and Trieste.
In Strassoldo, you're not just visiting history - you're living it.
What makes this property unique
Casa Rambaldo holds a unique magic: imagine staying in what was once the guards' residence of an ancient castle, belonging to the same family for over a thousand years - an extraordinary rarity in the European landscape. This millennial historical continuity makes the experience even more authentic, as guests stay in a castle complex that is not only preserved in time but still alive and inhabited by descendants of the same noble family.
The uniqueness of this residence lies in its dual soul: on one hand, it offers a living experience in one of Italy's most beautiful historic villages, on the other, it's strategically located to explore an incredibly rich and varied territory. It's a meeting point of different cultures - Italian, Austrian, and Slavic - reflected in the architecture, cuisine, and local traditions.
The true luxury of Casa Rambaldo lies in its authenticity: it's not a tourist reconstruction, but a piece of history expertly restored, part of a family heritage passed down through centuries. Guests can enjoy the privacy of their own enclosed garden while having access to the castle's magnificent park, a rare privilege that allows them to experience aristocratic life of bygone times. The house is located in a territory where history meets nature, where you can alternate visits to UNESCO sites with tastings at renowned wineries, beach days with walks in nearby nature sites
